People show great enthusiasm as the yatra enters new district in West Bengal

Kalna 2 in Burdwan district saw massive participation from the local villagers as representatives from Udayani Social Action Forum, part of the network in West Bengal on Right to Food and Work, held several meetings crossing through many gram panchayats. The public meetings saw attendance of about 400 people on an average in every place. From farmers groups to youth club members, women who are part of a wide SHG network came out of their homes to attend these meetings. A lot of them enquired about the 16 October program to be held in Jamshedpur so that they can join.

Nadia district rally started from Shantipur block with a campaign followed by a deputation with the BDO. Many workers in this block had applied for work under MGNREGA without any results from the administration and panchayat. BDO ensured that workers will be given work before the Durga Puja. The next destination was the Food InspectorⳊoffice where 150 villagers forced him to receive their applications for issuing ration cards. Today, Paschim Banga Khet Majoor Samity (PBKMS) and Shramajivee Mahila Samity (SMS) activists undertaking the yatra were accompanied by Bibartan Bhattacharya from the Chakda Vigyan o Sanskritik Sanstha, who provided solidarity, till it moved to Ranaghat block.

Paschim Medinipur district chapter of the yatra covered a radius of more than 100kms today in three blocks of Daton 1, Daton 2 and Mohanpur. Enthusiastic local people welcomed the vehicle rally and even provided food to the organizers.

From Namkhana to Sagar block, the South 24 Parganas district covered the remote hinterland falling in the Sunderban region. Discussion on local as well as national issues with the Joint BDO led to some effect where Midday meal cooks have not been paid wages for the last 8 months. He ensured that the same would be disbursed right away and also wanted a copy of the draft National Food Security Bill to understand the issues better.࠼/p>

In Bankura district, the yatra started yesterday with BDO deputations in Bankura 1and Shaltora blocks. Representatives from PBKMS, SMS, Rural Development Society and Udayini Social Action Forum is organising the yatra here. Forest rights and the implementation of Forest Rights Act, 2006 was one of the discussion points with the BDOs, both of whom have newly appointed and showed much interest in the campaign. A press conference was also organized in the district yesterday. Today, the yatra went to Chatna block, where delay in payment of pension to old persons is a huge concern. A meeting was held with the BDO, promising disbursement of pension amount before pujas.

Purulia vehicle rally started from a haat campaign in Kashipur block, moving to Santuri block where a padayatra was followed with a huge public meeting. Touching Raghunathpur, rally held by PBKMS and SMS entered Purulia 2 block, generating encouraging response from the locals.
