The deceased were identified as Sudhir, 10 and Vikram, 22.

According to police sources, Sudhir, Vikram and another member of the community, Sandeep, 23, were returning from a field to their dwellings when the assailants opened fire on them.

The 10-year-old boy died on the spot, while Vikram and Sandeep were rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak. Vikram was declared brought dead.

Meham DSP Prithvi Singh rushed to the spot with heavy police force.

Police said the condition of Sandeep was critical and further action would be taken after recording his statement.

Rohtak: Angry over the alleged killing of two Dalit youths by some upper caste people at Madina village, people belonging to Scheduled Castes on Sunday blocked the National Highway for over an hour by placing the bodies outside Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda's residence here.

The protesters were demanding immediate arrest of the killers, setting up of a police post at Madina village, financial aid and government job to a member of the families of the deceased.

On getting information, IGP (Rohtak Range), Anil Rao and Rohtak Deputy Commissioner Vikas Gupta along with police force rushed to the spot and persuaded the dalits to lift the blockade assuring them that the killers would be nabbed soon and no one would be spared.

Uneasy calm prevailed in Madina village where police personnel were deployed to avoid any untoward incident.

Following a year-old enmity, some armed people of upper caste allegedly assaulted three members of a dalit family by opening fire on them outside the village when they were returning home after working in the fields on Saturday night.

While one youth died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital. The third, a minor, is undergoing treatment in PGIMS here.

Meanwhile, various organisations of Dalit communities have asked the state government to provide financial aid of Rs 50 lakh and a government job each to family members of the deceased. PTI

Activists claim their colleague was brutally raped and murdered

Women's groups staged angry protests on National Highway 28 in Muzaffarpur district after a Dalit woman activist was found dead at Mandai village.

According to Rinku Devi of the Janwadi Mahila Samiti — a group that the victim was a member of — the woman was raped and murdered.

"The activist was raped and murdered in a brutal fashion. According to the family, sticks and mud were found in her private parts and her mouth was stuffed with a cloth. Her body was found near a cycle shop in the village. When we protested, the police slapped cases on us," Ms. Devi told The Hindu after speaking to the victim's family members.

The victim was fighting alleged irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and the public distribution system.

"Earlier, the police picked up the victim's husband and son. But we put pressure on them to release them. Family members cannot [carry out] an act so brutal. Everyone in the village knows who the perpetrators are but their lips are sealed in fear," Ms. Devi said.

The SP and the DSP paid a visit to the site on Saturday. The police said they were awaiting the post-mortem report and investigating the case. No arrests have been made yet.

Dalits give 'gun salute' to Ambedkar statue in Damoh

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bhopal/Dalits-give-gun-salute-to-Ambedkar-statue-in-Damoh/articleshow/19298956.cms

Deshdeep Saxena, TNN | Mar 31, 2013, 12.26 AM IST

BHOPAL: Flexing muscles for the first time, a group of dalits fired in air on Saturday to welcome the arrival of a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar that will replace a bust installed at the busy traffic square in Damoh, a backward district in Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.

The statue will be installed at the traffic square at a function on April 14, Ambedkar Jayanti, in the presence of chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Surprisingly, this incident took place two days after a dalit was allegedly beaten up and denied entry to a temple in the district. Chinga Ahirwar who tried to enter a temple was allegedly beaten up in Semra Madhiya village of Nohta about 40 km away from Damoh district headquarters. Ahirwar, who was allegedly denied entry in a temple, had filed a written complaint with the local police, but no FIR was lodged. As a group of dalits welcomed the arrival of the statue, some of them fired in air and celebrated its arrival. As the sound of fire reverberated, the onlookers were taken aback- for this possibly was the first occasion when dalits were flexing muscles, a privilege that remained with upper castes and landlords in the region.

Though the tradition to fire in air is prevalent in various parts of Madhya Pradesh, dalits have hardly been seen indulging in such an act. Mostly, this is done in political processions to welcome a political leader in northern MP or during marriage processions when Thakurs fire in air to celebrate.

Sunder Bhai, a dalit activist, said, "They are just following what others are doing in the society. This can also be seen as a reaction of the community that has been oppressed for years."

However, Damoh superintendent of police A K Pandey said that no dalit was denied entry in any temple in the district. "Wo ek chota -mota jhagda tha" (that was a minor fracas).

Regarding the incident of firing in air, Pandey first said, "Firing in air doesn't mean hungama as people here are describing it. Let me find out the truth". Later he called back and told TOI, "No such incident took place".
