LUCKNOW: Social activists from India and Pakistan will jointly celebrate the 105th birth anniversary of legendary revolutionary Shahid-e-Azam Bhagat Singh in Lahore on September 28. However, what may play spoilsports is delay in giving of visa by the Pakistan to 32 member Indian delegation, which includes 18 persons from Uttar Pradesh (UP). However, Indians were still hopeful they will get clearance on September 27 (Thursday) and join celebrations on September 28. The Indians activists along with their Pakistani counterparts, if allowed, may also visit revolutionary's village Bangha in Jaranwala tehsil of Lyallpur district.
"The Pakistanti authorities have not given us clearance so far apparently because of internal violent disturbance in the country but we are hopeful to get visa on Thursday," said Roma, UP convener, National Forum for Forest People and Forest Workers (NFFPFW). She informed that the celebrations are being organised by the Bhagat Singh Memorial Committee in Pakistan and it will be held at at Shadman Chowk in Lahore where the revolutionary was hanged to death by the British colonial rulers. The Labour Party of Pakistan has already demanded its government to rename Shadman Chowk after Bhagat Singh. Apart from the Labour Party of Pakistan, more than 40 civil society organisations and workers/labour unions will participate in the celebrations.
The idea to organise joint birth anniversary celebration was conceived during the visit of a ten member Pakistani delegation in May earlier this year. The Pakistani social and political activists participated in the May 26 conference of NFFPFW in Dehradun. During conversation, activists of both the nations came to the conclusion that colonialism has been replaced by economic imperialism which can be counter only by reclaiming the revolutionary socialist legacy of Bhagat Singh and his comrades-in-arms, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Sohan Singh Josh, Chandarshekar Azad, Ajay Kumar Gosh, Yashpal and others. It was decided that events associated with these revolutionaries will be celebrated to motivate people of the two countries to join the struggle against the imperialism.
"The problems of the poor in both the countries are same. However, the opportunist and fascist forces instigate people on the two sides of border against each other to divert the attention from the lack of governance and injustice," said Ashok Chowdhury, a veteran socialist leader and social activist fight for the rights of tribals and forest dwellers. "We want our coming generations to be aware of greats like Bhagat Singh and Faiz Ahmed Faiz and come on a common platform to fight for the oppressed classes. The US led western countries see India and Pakistan as big markets and want the conflict between the two to continue so that they can to sell their arms and ammunition. The conspiracy is to keep the two dependent on the western world forever", he added.
Reacting to delay in visa, the Bhagat Singh Memorial Committee, Pakistan, in a press release stated that its unfortunate that the Indian delegation has not been given clearance by the interior ministry of Pakistan despite the fact that the application was moved a month in advance. Indian delegates will be warmly received when ever they could come, if the visa does not come in time, it added. The events to be held during the two day celebration include a seminar on Bhagat Singh's life on September 28 at Dayal Singh Auditorium in Lahore. The Ajoka Theatre will perform on the occasion and show a documentary on Bhagat Singh. Activists expected to participate in the events include those who have been demanding Pakistan to declare itself a secular State.
