The woman, who was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by some persons in Jaswant Nagar area of Etawah on July 12, set herself ablaze yesterday, police said.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died during treatment.

Vehicular movement at Sikandarau area resumed only after Superintendent of Police Deepika Tiwari reached the spot and assured the family members and BSP workers that the accused will be nabbed soon.

"The victim has given her statement before her death in which she had taken some names. We have identified them and will arrest them soon", Tiwari said.

She said information in this regard has been forwarded to Jaswant Nagar police.

Hathras brought to a halt after woman’s rape, suicide

HATHRAS: Vehicles were burnt and stones pelted in Sikander Rao Road in Hathras district as a crowd protesting the gang-rape and subsequent suicide of a 22-year-old Dalit woman turned violent on Tuesday morning.

Police said that on July 12, five men visited the victim at her husband's home in Etawah and told her that her brother had sent them to fetch her. She was to accompany them to her parents' home in Purvi Naurangabad near Sikander Rao in Hathras, they said. The unsuspecting woman went with the five men, who were later joined by two others.

On the way, the men raped her and abandoned her close to a railway track. Reaching home, the woman confided in her mother. LateMonday, she doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire, police said.

She was rushed to Aligarh Medical College, where she died of the 80% burn injuries.

The woman's mother and brother placed her body on display on the road, at a spot between the Sikander Rao police station and the railway gate, demanding compensation for their loss and immediate arrest of the accused.

The police station was attacked by an angry mob, and the numbers of people on protest soon swelled. Over 500 protestors gathered at the spot, going on a rampage and attempting to set a BSNL mobile tower on fire.

Local people jammed the Etah-Aligarh highway, and the mob set vehicles on fire. Demonstrators also pelted stones at policemen, who resorted to lathicharge to quell the crowd. Police and personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary from Aligarh, Hathras and Agra districts were rushed to the spot.

The woman's relatives said she was under depression, as the police, whom the family had approached on Sunday, had taken no immediate action.

Hathras SP Dipika Tiwari told TOI that the victim, before dying, had recorded a statement in front of police.

An FIR has been registered against Zeeshan, Tullan, Vakeel, Taufeeq and some unidentified men, under Sections 376 (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC.

Mohit Gupta, Aligarh SSP, who is also DIG in-charge, Hathras, said, "We had already arrested two people, and on the demand of the victim's family, we conducted the post-mortem examination at night. But some anti-social elements tried to exploit the situation."

Hathras DM Shamim Ahmed said there was no delay in lodging an FIR. He said his administration planned to lodge an FIR against the miscreants responsible for disturbing the law and order situation.

The district administration later convinced the victim's kin to cremate her. The victim's brother told TOI, "She was my only sister. And her last rites were performed without the usual rituals." (With inputs from Ishita Mishra, Agra)

Mob fury in UP after woman is kidnapped and gang-raped, then burned alive for threatening to report her attackers

Large-scale violence erupted in the Sikandararau area of Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, following the death of a woman who was gang-raped and burnt alive by her attackers on Monday

Police said an irate mob threw stones and set fire to over a dozen of vehicles. The police reportedly fired blanks in the air to disperse the protesters.

Over a dozen demonstrators and policemen sustained injuries.

A 26-year-old dalit married woman was kidnapped by a gang of three men from her in-laws' house in Jaswantnagar in Etawah district on July 11.

Later, the assailants brought her to a house in Sikandararau area and raped her. After the attack, the miscreants dumped the victim near her mother's house in the same area.

The rapists once again assaulted her on Monday before setting her on fire because she was planning to approach the police.

She was taken to a local hospital by some Bajrang Dal leaders on Monday July 14, where she succumbed to burn injuries on Monday night.

Subsequently, the family, relatives and neighbours of the deceased resorted to violence, raising anti-police and anti-government slogans.

In fact, the deceased told the mediapersons before her death that the rapists assaulted and tortured her.

"Seven youths of Sikandararau kidnapped me in the night of July 11, brought me here and gang-raped in a house for two days. Then they threw me near my mother's house as my father had died two years ago.

"My mother tried to conceal the incident with the hope that my husband will accept me when I go back to him. But I was thinking to register a case with the police. These rapists attacked me again on Monday, sprinkled kerosene and set on fire," she was quoted as saying.

She also registered a statement before the magistrate prior to her death.

Meanwhile, the situation in Sikandararau is taking on a communal character as the accused reportedly belonged to the Muslim community.

Ranjan Arya, a Bajrang Dal leader, who had taken the victim to hospital, said: "The SP government has given standing order to the police to go slow on the criminals of minority community. This is why the police are punishing the protesters instead of the rapists."

Vijendra Tomar, Circle Officer of Sikandararau, said: "Huge police and paramilitary force have been deployed in the areas to maintain peace. We have also constituted several teams to arrest the accused."

Aasur Tense After Caste Hindu Girl Flees with Dalit

VILLUPURAM: Tension gripped Aasur village near Tindivanam on Monday night after Caste Hindus and Dalits clashed and pelted stones at each other after a Caste Hindu girl reportedly eloped with a Dalit youth, on Monday night.

Sources said the clash was fuelled by the love affair between S Jaakis (22), a Dalit youth, and M Subhulakshmi (19) a Caste Hindu girl, who went missing two days back.

Jaakis, who was working in a private firm in Chennai, fell in love with Subhulakshmi two years ago.

Subhulakshmi was doing her second year diploma in a polytechnic college in Vellore. Her family came to know about this, and got so angry that they forcibly fixed her wedding with another man from their community. But, before the wedding could take place, Subhulakshmi’s father Muthu came to know on Monday that the couple had registered their MARRIGE  and were staying in the house of Jaakis’ friend in Chennai.

Hearing the news, about 50 of Subhulakshmi’s relatives rushed to the house of Jaakis’ parents in Aasur and damaged their house and two of their relatives’ houses as well.

Enraged by this, the Dalit residents in the area started attacking the caste Hindus, resulting in a clash where both sides hurled stones at each other, causing injuries to people from the two castes.

On receiving information, more than 300 police personnel were sent to Aasur village for protection in order to avert any further untoward incidents.

Tindivanam police registered a case and further investigations are on. Villupuram district is known to have one of the highest Dalit population in Tamil Nadu.

Village rewarded for eradicating untouchability

MADURAI: In what may come as a morale booster for other villages, the Sulakarai panchayat in Virudhunagar district was awarded Rs 10 lakh for eradicating untouchability from its limits. The award was presented to V Muthuramalingam, president of the Sulakarai panchayat in Rajapalayam union by the district collector Hariharan on Monday.

The human rights and social justice wing of the adi dravida welfare department which submitted a report recently after a survey of villages in the district, declared Sulakarai as a socially-equal society without any discrimination in caste or creed. Based on their study, the department of adi dravida and tribal welfare of the state government identified this village for its ability to eradicate the social scourge of untouchability and announced the award for the year 2013-14 which carries a cash award of Rs 10 lakh.

According to the residents, Muthuramalingam has been at the helm of affairs for four consecutive terms since 1995. Almost all of them in this village speak in his favour, who is believed to be liberal and easily approachable. "He is always ready to listen to our grievances and address them," said Pandikumar, a villager.

According to Muthuramalingam nobody in the village discriminated people based on caste and all of them lived in harmony and amity. "If you take a look at our community there will be many families which have had inter-caste marriages and we welcome them," he said. People from all communities attend functions and funerals of others. The teashops treat all the villagers as equal, unlike many neighbouring villages.

Dalit people in this village say that most of their relatives envy them when they visit from other places because of the camaraderie they (dalits) enjoy with their other counterparts in the village.

Also, people from all communities have their last rites performed in the common cemetery for all in the village.

The president says that he plans to utilize the FUNDS received through the award for enhancing drinking water facilities for the entire village and providing better roads.
