Assam's moment of shame
As someone who has been on the receieving end of the media, I feel the "prerogative of the harlot throughout the ages" has been exhibited by the media blacksheep in Guwahati again.
IN Guwahati, the media gives its mobile numbers regularly in the scrolls encouraging viewers to conatct them whenever anything newsworthy happens near them. This abets people to ring up the TV channels then the police.
In a recent incident in front of my house, I found there were a few people who were trying to accost a couple when one drunk passerby stated that TV should be called. Immediately two persons took out their mobile sets and it seems they had the channel number stored. I, on my part called 100. The Tv people and the police arrived almost simultaneously. The crowd was very upset that I informed the police. I objected to the TV people coming into my campus, which gave a handle to the channel to project the incident in a negative light with insinuations against me the next day.
In this case also, the basic question is why the TV people spent so much time photographing the shameless episode, and never bothered to ring up 100 and get the police? Whatever the channels may be saying that by photographing the incident they identified the culprits, I am sure if they would have informed the police, the pertrators would have been apprehended immediately. I did not see the programme on the local channels, since I do not think they are worrth my time, so I do not know what was exactly shown, but from what I hear, for a very long period the incident was broadcast live. Just imagine, no one thought of calling the police? And that GS Road is supposed to be quite a busy place, in fact I have not been there for a long time since the traffic is quite bad. How it continued for such a long time? There are lot of people who should be asked a lot of uncomfortable questions. in stead we are debating about the falling moral standards of our youths.
Incidentally, one of the prime perpetrator of the ghastly crime was a casual worker of AMTRON (I am a Director of AMTRON) who was immediately identified by some Amtron employees who were watching TV. The AMTRON chief was immediately contacted and FIR was lodged. The first thing next morning AMTRON did was to sack that casual employee who is also reportedly a TV actor. He is underground now.
