NHRC issues notice to Health Secretary, Government of West Bengal calling for a report into the allegations of death of 17 babies
New Delhi, July 1st, 2011
The National Human Rights Commission has seen media reports and also received a complaint alleging that 17 infants died within a span of two days at the B.C. Roy , Paediatric Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal leading to protest by the parents who blamed the doctors for the negligence.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the Commission in its proceedings on the 1st July, 2011 has observed that paediatric care is one of the cardinal requirements of infant health and any negligence/dereliction of duty by public servants/doctors is detrimental to the Right to Health of the concerned. The allegations, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights.
The Commission has issued a notice to the Secretary, Department of Health, Government of West Bengal, directing him to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter. He has been asked to submit the report to the Commission within two weeks.
