'Israel fears Gaza aid programs'
Thu Jul 7, 2011 3:14PM
Israel is terrified of the civilian-sponsored humanitarian programs for Gaza because they reveal Tel-Aviv's aggressive character, an activist says.
"Israel is terrified of non-violent action [for Gaza] because it reveals its violent nature," renowned British journalist Lauren Booth said in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday.
In early June, a ten-ship humanitarian flotilla gathered in various Greek ports to set sail for the Gaza Strip in a bid to break Israel's five-year blockade on the coastal sliver.
Israel has ordered its navy to use all possible means to prevent the incoming international aid flotilla from reaching the Gaza Strip, but the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II organizers insist that they will push ahead with their aid mission.
The flotilla will be backed by five or six hundred activists on flights to Tel Aviv who will be demanding their rights to access the occupied Palestinian territories.
"Israel has surrounded its airport at Tel Aviv with soldiers; we were talking of re-routing flights. This kind of civilian action is what really terrifies Israel more than anything," Booth said.
The Israeli regime laid an economic siege on the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after the democratically-elected Hamas lawmakers took over the administration of the enclave.
The blockade has had a disastrous impact on the humanitarian and economic situation in the impoverished territory.
Some 1.5 million people are being denied their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and their rights to appropriate living conditions, work, health and education.
