Delegates from Bahrain's secular opposition party, Al Waad, also attended the talks, all holding a picture of their leader, Ibrahim Sharif — the most prominent Sunni politician who has been imprisoned along with 20 other opposition leaders for plotting to overthrow Bahrain's 200-year-old monarchy.
Shiites account for about 70 percent of Bahrain's 525,000 people, but claim they face systematic discrimination such as being blocked from top government, political and military posts.
The head of Al Wefaq, Sheik Ali Salman, told supporters on Friday that his group will join the talks but will stick to its calls for the Sunni monarchy to loosen the grip on power.
At least 32 people have died in the unrest since the protests began in February — inspired by uprisings elsewhere in the Middle East. Hundreds of opposition supporters, activists and others have been taken into custody and many other perceived protest backers have been purged from jobs and universities.
Amid the crackdowns, Al Wefaq staged a mass resignation of its 18 lawmakers in the 40-member lower house of parliament. Two former lawmakers are in custody and on trial on anti-state crimes. Al Wefaq said one of them, Jawad Firooz, was listed on the party's five-member delegation to the talks although he didn't attend Saturday's opening session because he remains in detention.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - One of the leaders of the Islamic National Accord Association (al-Wefaq), Seyyed Hadi Mussawi, said on Friday that Bahrain's largest opposition group has "not yet decided whether or not it will take part in the dialogue."
He pointed out, "We have always urged dialogue. We have no problems with dialogue as it is, yet we do not want to engage in talks that are bound to fail".
Meanwhile, senior Bahraini cleric Sheikh Issa Qasim says the country's political parties should receive public permission before they take part in any serious talks with the government.
Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds arrested in the Saudi-backed crackdown on the protests in Bahrain since mid-February.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Ahmed Raofi Nejad the C.M of Iran's province Zanjan during a meeting of command and prohibition committee on 26th of June said that the current environment in the society is not suitable for the honor of this society therefore we must struggle and work hard to spread good deeds in the society.
He added that currently 140 such websites are present and they distort the countenance of Islam and Shiites.
He said that currently all the people of the society are demanding good deeds in the society and wants to fight against evil prevailing in the society.
Finally he said that the committee for commanding virtues and prohibiting evil will be established on 15th of Shaban.
