The Delhi High Court Friday issued notice to the Delhi University and St. Stephen's College on a plea by a student who was denied admission to the college under the Christian quota.
A vacation bench of Justice Manmohan Singh asked the respondents to reply by June 27.
The court was hearing a petition filed Thursday by Nikhil Neil Das, who secured 89 percent marks in Class 12 but was not allowed to appear in an admission interview in St. Stephen's College under the Christian quota.
Das, who applied for admission to B.A. Economics (Hons) course, said in the petition that the college illegally and unconstitutionally set a criteria of admission to benefit candidates who were members of the Church of North India (CNI), which he was not.
St. Stephen's College came out with two cut-offs for the course - one for members of the CNI and otherwise.
"At the time of submitting the application, there was no mention of a different cut-off of marks within the Christian community," said the petition.
Das filed the petition through lawyer Ashok Agarwal, who said that 40 percent seats in the course were reserved for Christian students, and Das had applied under that quota.
Talking to IANS, the student's father Wing Commander Sankar Das said that he will go and meet the college dean on the issue.
"I will ask them how they can deny my son admission," he said. |
