NATO airstrike kills children in Libya
Mon Jun 20, 2011 12:13PM
A French naval aviation helicopter gets ready to attack Libyan territories on June 14, 2011.
At least 15 civilians, including three children, have been killed after NATO warplanes bombed a residential area near the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
The causalities came after several missiles struck civilian houses in Sorman, west of Tripoli on Monday.
Libyan government Spokesman Mussa Ibrahim says the strike was a "cowardly terrorist act which cannot be justified."
The deaths come just hours after NATO admitted that it had killed several civilians in one of its attacks on Tripoli.
The Western military alliance says one of its airstrikes on Tripoli early on Sunday did not hit its intended target.
NATO says a weapons system failure may have caused the incident.
Libya says at least nine civilians were killed and over a dozen others were wounded in the attack. Libyan government sources say a four-member Syrian family is among the dead.
NATO's admission comes after the alliance took responsibility for attacking revolutionary forces in the eastern town of Brega on Thursday.
NATO is conducting airstrikes in Libya to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which calls for the protection of civilians.
However, the Libyan government says the bombings have left hundreds of civilians dead.
