The Death of Democracy and Human Rights in India

Beginning midnight June 4, 2011, the capital of India, Delhi, witnessed the barbaric actions of the government exerted upon hundreds of thousands of peaceful Satyagrahis assembled at that time, sleeping in the Ram Lila ground tents. The brutality of the police towards thousands of innocent resting people, including children and women, revisited the atrocities committed by British rulers at Jallianwala BaghThe people assembled were gassed, lathi-charged and trampled by thousands of policemen. Baba Ramdev was taken away to an unknown destination by the police.

The people who had come from villages, towns and various long distances were asked to leave the grounds immediately, at 2 o'clock in the morning. This cannot be a Democratic India; this cannot be Mahatma Gandhi's India; this is not India governed by of rule of law and a democratic constitution, ensuring the fundamental rights of all.

These were the actions of people in power who do not believe in Indian values, the values of Mahatma Gandhi, and the declaration of individual human rights. India, which always gave shelter to the needy and helpless, was humiliated by the devilish acts of ignoble and arrogant rulers of the day. It was an act of treachery upon Baba Ramdev and his followers, who had come to present their demands against rampant corruption in India.

These cruel actions reminded us of the days of the 1975 emergency. Unfortunately, these brutalities were committed upon unarmed and resting people within close proximity of the Mahatma Gandhi Samadhi. We, the people of Indian Origin all over the world are deeply depressed, embarrassed and pained by this vulgar display of naked power. No justification of any kind can condone these vicious actions.

The Indian Diaspora condemns it. We urge everybody to join in the movement to restore democracy and civility in India. Let us be united in expressing our disgust and anger about the death of democracy and human rights within the country. We hope Baba Ramdev ji is not further harmed in any way.

Unlike any other civilization, India is a special country with Gods, Godmen and Gurus. A Guru is a requirement for one's salvation. You can't force them to respect other foreign religions, just because your constitution has got a "secular" word, which is not defined yet. The people of this land were here much before Indian constitution, sometime as 2nd class citizens, which caused the bitterness;as Iraqi sihas - how they feel about Sunnis. So, you can't force a constitution upon their beliefs.

Those who embraced Islam during Muslim rule were either a foreigner,  greedy (of a King's job in Muslim Army) , preferred Islam over Hinduism or descendants of a forcible marriage/ of a Hindu girl to an invader; if you think of any other reason - let us know.

I had been to Boston,MA during last memorial day weekend. I came to know that -afterdeclaration of Independence, the first thing Americans did -  they changed the name of  all 'British named streets' - e.g. Queen Street became Court street.

What we did after 1947 ? Babar Road, Akbar Road, Aurangjeb Road and Muslims are upset because a Sadvi Ritambara was a part of Babri Structure demolition. So, now some of you would teach or dictate the original inhabitants, who didn't convert to the foreign religion and maintained their identity - "with whom they should associate and with whom not"; is n't it sound ridiculous. If Sadvi Ritambara feels proud of a movement - let her do that; if she doesn't like descendent of invaders - so be it.  You can't dictate a  Hindu Baba not to share a stage with Sadvi, just because some of you, whose ancestors were betrayed or abandoned their original religion have got problems with that association. You can't force some one to like or dislike some one - period.

Personally, I would like to reserve my right of  association with some one based on my judgement and I would do that is based on my analysis of the individual or group. At the same time, you have every right to express displeasure because of his association. I am okay if  some of you don't like Baba's association with Sadvi - but don't tell Baba to disassociate him from Sadvi to prove his secular credentials; this is what the reason of Anna Hazare's U-turn upon Modi .

A true leader does what he believes and his followers admire him.her for that character;expediency doesn't help in long run.

In fact I am so pissed off with the name of roads in NCT, Delhi, if I were PM, I would erase the name of all invaders whether some of you like it or not. Hindu-Muslim clashes no more surprise me because Muslim still love invaders Babar and his constructed Masjid. Similarly, when I note - How global Muslims disregard the ancient history of Israel, city names in old testament, rule of Jews King David and his son Solomon and claim that as a Muslim land - I see that as a Universal Muslim behavior - "Always clash with original inhabitants".

No offense meant; as a writer and keen observer - sometimes I had to express something, which many may not like. Knowing the reaction of others sometimes help to close differences. The constitution of India allows every one to practice his preferred religion without fear; it doesn't give any right to meddle with others affairs. You may not vote if you dislike but demanding 'secular credentials' from the original inhabitants - is that last thing some one do.

If some one would demand secular credentials from me - I say GTH ; I don't know what that is.

thanks
Manoj Padhi
