PRESS RELEASE – PARENTS HOLD COUNTRY-WIDE PROTESTS AGAINST FEE HIKE, DEMAND CENTRAL LAW TO REGULATE FEE April 30, 2011 - Parents today held country-wide protests at the call of All India Parents Association (AIPA) against arbitrary fee hike by the unaided private schools and demanded enactment of Central Law to regulate fee and other charges in unaided private schools. Parents also demanded inclusion of a provision providing a minimum 50% representation of the parents in the managing committees of these schools. Parents also demanded up gradation of all Government-run schools to the level of Kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools). AIPA National President Advocate Ashok Agarwal has today sent a letter to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in this regard. Over 500 parents and students from Delhi and Haryana gathered today at Jantar Mantar and strongly protested against deliberate inaction on the part of the Governments to check menace of commercialization of education in unaided private schools and to improve the standard of education in the Government-run schools. Parents with 41 students studying in St. Lawrence Convent School, Geeta Colony facilities Centre, Delhi-31 in different classes under EWS category also participated in the Protest Rally and highlighted that the school from the academic year 2011-12 has started discriminating these students in various unjust and illegal manners. Their classes are being held separately from other mainstreamed students. One teacher is teaching all these students in a most casual manner. Blackboard is not used. These students are not included in the prayer. (W) has been mentioned in the I. Cards having been issued to these children to indicate that they belong to weaker section which is derogatory. These children are not allowed to participate in any school activity and they are asked to not to come on such occasions. The Government must step into and stop all this. The protestors marched towards parliament but the police stopped them near Parliament Police Station. Addressing the rally, AIPA National President Ashok Agarwal told that to check commercialization in unaided schools, a comprehensive Central Law to regulate fee and other charges is a must. To do social justice to the children of the masses, all government run schools all over the country must be upgraded to the level of Central Schools. The injustice meted out by the unaided private schools to the students belonging to EWS category is totally unacceptable. If required, AIPA will approach the High Court for relief. The rally was addressed amongst others by AIPA General Secretary Kailash Sharma, Vice-President Subash Lamba and Delhi President I.S.Gambhir. Stewart School guardians' Forum has today organized protest rally at Cuttack City of Odisha in support of AIPA demands. They have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Odisha through the Collector, Cuttack. Similarly, Karnataka Parents have today submitted memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Bidar, Karnataka for passing resolution in the Legislative Assembly on the demands raised by the AIPA and sent it to the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India.
