Protesters burn effigies of Haryana CM, MP, MLAs

Kurukshetra: Effigies of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a local MP and MLAs belonging to scheduled castes were burnt by protesters today demanding police action in a rape and murder case of a 16-year-old Dalit girl.

Braving the scorching sun, the activists, mostly women, belonging to the Indian Bahujan Sandesh Party staged the protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here.

Led by the Party's president, Kanta Alhadiya, the protesters also undertook a march and raised anti-police and anti-government slogans.

There was a large contingent of police to meet any eventuality particularly in view of the alert after yesterday's low intensity bomb blast in Delhi High Court complex, said officials.

The protesters carried effigies of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, an MP and MLAs belonging to the Dalit communities and set them afire.

Alhadiya alleged that despite a minor Dalit girl being abducted, gangraped and brutally murdered here on May 4 only a handful of scheduled caste MLAs visited the victim's family.

She said that the Haryana government's decision to ask the Centre to order a CBI probe into the case was an "eyewash" and it would prove to be "a total flop" as "in the Aarushi murder case of Noida."

"By now most of the evidence must have been destroyed and it seems to be a conspiracy of those high-ups whose sons were probably involved in this crime and the whole case has been diluted now," she alleged.

The protesters also staged a 'Shyapa' (mourning process after death of a relative by way of beating breast while weeping and wailing).

Police, in the meanwhile, have constituted 10 teams which were sent to various places, including Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, to search for the culprits.

Police have also raised the reward money from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for anyone giving information about them. PTI

Muzaffarnagar: A Dalit youth was allegedly shot dead when he opposed the eve-teasing of his sister by some persons at Gadla village in the district, police said on Thursday.

The victim, Mohit, was allegedly shot dead when an altercation broke out between him and the youths after they passed lewd comments at the former's sister, said officials.

Police has arrested one of the accused, Kallu Singh, and a case has been registered against two others who are absconding, officials said. PTI

National dalit panel claims two boys missing in Greater Noida

NEW DELHI: National Commission for SCs may summon officials of Gautam Buddh Nagar, claiming that two dalit boys were missing since the police action on Bhatta Parsaul.

NCSC chief P L Punia's day-long visit on Thursday to the villages hit by farmer-police clashes appeared an extension of Congress's campaign against UP chief minister Mayawati, starting with Rahul Gandhi 's sensational charge of mass murder and rape.

Punia said dalit boys Anand and Ritesh had not returned home since the Bhatta crackdown. "Their parents said they did not know about their whereabouts... the villagers showed me burnt clothes of a missing boy... the police indulged in atrocities on dalits in Bhatta, Parsaul and Achhepur. It is shameful," he said.

NCSC may summon the DM and SP for questioning and, if unsatisfied, could file a case under the stringent anti-dalit atrocities law, a sensitive move against the tallest SC leader in contemporary politics.

The panel's visit coincided with that of minister of state in PMO V Narayansamy, who distributed compensation cheques to the injured in villages as announced by the prime minister. Earlier, the National Commission for Women too had questioned the state's claims.

The central tours formed part of Congress's attempt to mobilize farmers against the ruling BSP, a fact which led to Mayawati slam Congress for political opportunism with eyes on the 2012 polls.

The Congress aims to replicate Nandigram in UP where it has failed to emerge as a serious player despite a surprise Lok Sabha show. The anger in western region, party managers believe, can neutralize BSP's caste networking by uniting farmers across the social divide, while sustained focus on land acquisition can influence farmers elsewhere.

While Rahul's controversial claim of mass murder and rape by police raised eyebrows, with negative result from forensic tests and family accounts, Congress upped the offensive last week with Sonia Gandhi leading the charge against Mayawati at the party's Varanasi convention. Congress is keeping the mass murder accusation hanging as evident from PMO ignoring any compensation for the dead.

Sources said the party focus is set to stay on Bhatta. Youth Congress leaders have applied for details on land alongside the expressway given to the industrialist developing it and the price paid to farmers for land acquisition. Besides, it has asked the administration for details of when and how Section 144 was imposed and lifted during the turbulence, aimed at showing that it was done to hide the goings-on.

Saif Ali Khan, who plays a dalit in Prakash Jha's Aarakshan, got so involved in his character that he would sit with the director for long hours discussing and researching about the same. Confirms Jha, "Saif would have a lot of questions based on his role, he would sit with me and discuss a lot about the minute details and history of the dalits. He got so involved that he thought it would be better to portray that character after a lot of research." Saif, initially, was against the reservation system followed in India but as the film shooting proceeded and he got into the role he started believing in the reservation practice. He said, "I realised that in the interior of India, there are serious issues pertaining to the Dalits. They are still being treated badly and this changed my perception about the policy."

'Vitth' depicts caste system still thriving in society

SD sharma , Chandigarh, May 26

The fourth edition of theatre festival Adakarian -2011, organised by the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala, in association with the Adakar Manch Mohali, began with the staging of a Punjabi play Vitth at the auditorium of Government College, Sector 46, here today.

Based on the all time relevant theme of caste prejudices, the play " Vitth" traces the gap created by the centuries-old caste system in the society, which still thrives, despite credible awakening in the modern era.

A Jatt girl, Preeti, falls in love with a boy from a lower caste, marries him much to the displeasure of her family. After 10 years, the family accepts the couple and invites them to a family function. But the couple is made to feel humiliated by the narrow-minded relatives but the couple boldly faces them and rejects them. Rajinder Rozy played the protagonist's role of Preeti and the play was scripted by Dr Sahib Singh based on a story by Prem Gorkhi.

Another bilingual play " Andhey Hain Hum" brought into focus the mental blindness among human beings. Written, directed and enacted by Sahib Singh, the play illustrates the writer's viewpoint through a soul-stirring story of two blind beggars who are disowned by their parents and earn their bread by begging at a bus stand. Vinod Kumar, Arshika and Sunny Gill played the supporting roles.

" Katha Turi Bahurangi" will be staged tomorrow.
