News of Bin Laden's Death and Funeral - December 2001 --Translation of Funeral Article in Egyptian Paper: al-Wafd, Wednesday, December 26, 2001 Vol 15 No 4633 --News of Bin Laden's Death and Funeral 10 days ago 26 Dec 2001 Islamabad - A prominent official in the Afghan Taleban movement announced yesterday the death of Osama bin Laden, the chief of al-Qa'da organization, stating that bin Laden suffered serious complications in the lungs and died a natural and quiet death.

White House backtracks on how bin Laden died --The White House admitted last night that its initial account of the way Osama bin Laden died at the hands of US forces had been riddled with errors. 03 May 2011 Claims that the al-Qaeda leader had died while firing an automatic weapon at commandos were withdrawn, with President Barack Obama's spokesman admitting "he was unarmed". A dramatic description of bin Laden using his wife as a "human shield" and forcing her to sacrifice her life also proved to be false... In an embarrassing climb-down, Barack Obama's press secretary, Jay Carney, admitted that the previous version of events -- which came mostly from the chief US counter-terrorism adviser, John Brennan -- had been put out "with great haste". The about-turn left the US open to accusations of a cover-up and led to calls for video footage of the raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and images of bin Laden's body to be released to end conspiracy theories. However, the White House suggested that pictures of bin Laden's body were too "gruesome" to be made public because they could prove "inflammatory" "Photoshopped".

Osama bin Laden: US changes account of al-Qaida leader's death --US counter-terrorism officials correct earlier claims that al-Qaida chief fired a weapon and that his wife was killed 03 May 2011 The US has backed away from its initial account of the killing of Osama bin Laden, which claimed that the 'al-Qaida' leader was carrying a weapon and fired at US troops before he was shot dead. On Monday, John Brennan, a counterterrorism adviser to Barack Obama, said Bin Laden was "engaged in a firefight" with his assailants and he did not know if he "got off any rounds". Other US officials briefed that he was firing at members of the US navy's elite Seal Team Six. However, subsequent briefings by US officials suggest that, when confronted at the high-security complex in Abbottabad, Bin Laden did not have a weapon and did not fire at his assailants.

Can US Offer Final Proof of Osama's Death? 02 May 2011 The circumstances surrounding Osama bin Laden's reported death raise urgent questions over how the US is so sure it got its man...  Photographs of Bin Laden after his reported death have not been released. The fact his body was buried at sea has so far only added to the speculation, although as a Muslim, he had to be laid to rest as quickly as possible. Under Islamic law, people can only be buried at sea if they died there, or if there is a risk their body will be exhumed or dug up if buried in the ground.

U.S. used DNA, 'other means' to ID bin Laden's body, source says 02 May 2011 A senior Pentagon official personally saw a photograph of the corpse. He declined, however, to specify the methods of identification, but two Obama administration officials said DNA evidence confirmed the death... Still, it was unclear if the world would ever get visual proof. Bin Laden's body was quickly buried at sea, and administration officials were weighing the merit and appropriateness of releasing a photo of bin Laden, who was shot in the head.

'US pursues assassination strategy' 03 May 2011 Former Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz says the United States has adopted Tel Aviv's policy of targeted assassinations in the killing of al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden. Mofaz said in an interview with Israeli radio on Tuesday that Washington's decision to kill bin Laden rather than try him in a court of law justified the former policy that Tel Aviv implemented against Palestinians that included killing Hamas and other senior Palestinian officials. He also called on Tel Aviv to increase targeted killings of Palestinian leaders, claiming that the strategy has been successful in curtailing their activities. Mofaz currently heads the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

It was as if they had won the Super Bowl: Carnival scenes as the U.S. gives a collective whoop of joy 03 May 2011 The hastily scrawled placard that a young man waved from a lamp-post at the site of Ground Zero perfectly summed up the feeling: 'Obama 1, Osama 0.' Waving flags and bottles of champagne, singing the national anthem and chanting 'USA! USA!', crowds of Americans had streamed on to the streets to celebrate the killing of Osama Bin Laden. While some complained about the need for greater solemnity (a German architect whose team had been shortlisted to design one of the replacements for the Twin Towers criticised 'hokey nationalism'), this is not the land of the muted response.

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall creates uproar with Twitter posts on bin Laden 03 May 2011 Rashard Mendenhall has created a stir with comments made on his official Twitter page regarding Osama bin Laden's death. The Pittsburgh Steelers running back on Monday tweeted: "What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side..." Mendenhall didn't hold back, even making a reference to the Sept. 11 attacks. "We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style." [Exactly. 9/11 was an inside job, six ways to Sunday.]

Terror suspects held at nuclear plant: The Queen's UK on alert after Osama bin Laden's death 03 May 2011 Five men from London are being questioned on suspicion of terrorism after being seized close to the Sellafield nuclear site, police said today. They were arrested as the country was put on full terror alert in case of reprisals for the killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan by US special forces. The Queen's Met said the Queen's anti-terrorism officers were being kept informed. Inquiries will be made in London in connection with the arrests.

Five men held outside Sellafield after 'taking pictures' --Armed officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary arrested the men, who were believed to be Muslims, and handed them over to Cumbria police. --Later, officers from Scotland Yard's Counter-Terrorism Command raided four homes in east London. 04 May 2011 Five men were being questioned by the Queen's anti-terrorism officers last night after being arrested for allegedly taking pictures outside the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death. The men, all aged in their twenties and from London, were stopped close to the Cumbria plant on Monday afternoon, hours after the death of the al-Qaeda leader was announced. The arrests follow reports in The Daily Telegraph last week that al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh] had threatened a nuclear attack in the event of bin Laden's death.

U.S. cities, states heighten precautions against terrorism --'The Metropolitan Police Department maintains a heightened state of alert.' 03 May 2011 Major cities stepped up their security Tuesday to protect against reprisal for the assassination of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. More bomb-sniffing canine units patrolled transit stations in Washington, D.C., and New York City while police pledged to make wider use of "invisible" surveillance, such as hidden cameras. Security also is being increased at ports, stadiums and airports.

US on watch for domestic attacks 03 May 2011 The FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned law enforcement agencies across the country yesterday that Osama bin Laden's death will probably inspire home-grown extremists in the United States to try to carry out attacks in the near term. [?] The agencies issued a joint intelligence bulletin that said the core Al Qaeda group is less likely to carry out attacks against the United States in the immediate future, but its spinoff groups around the world could use bin Laden's death as an excuse to speed up plans for attacks.

Landlords Warned to Watch Out for "Radicalized Individuals" --DHS issued warnings Sunday evening 03 May 2011 The federal government is advising private property owners to raise their own alert level following the death of Osama bin Laden. The Department of Homeland Security advised management companies and businesses that a terrorist threat could come in the form of an individual acting as a "lone wolf," the Washington Business Journal reported. DHS sent messages to property owners on Sunday evening.

TSA, law enforcement to conduct thousands of VIPR missions across U.S. 21 Apr 2011 Transportation Security Administration conducted what it calls a random "Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response Operation" on Thursday morning at the West Palm Beach Tri-Rail station. TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz said that response, known as VIPR, is a highly-visible operation to help detect and deter any suspicious or dangerous activity in various modes of transportation. The TSA VIPR teams are designed to enhance security by working in mass transit, aviation, rail, maritime and other transportation modes alongside state and local law enforcement agencies during major events or as a random deterrent. TSA has partnered with local law enforcement to conduct thousands of VIPR missions from coast to coast across the U.S.

U.S. sends out worldwide alert amid fears of reprisal attacks 02 May 2011 The State Department has put U.S. embassies on alert today as the news broke of the death of Osama bin Laden. A worldwide travel alert was released shortly after President Barack Obama late Sunday announced bin Laden's death after a military operation in Pakistan. The State Department said there was an 'enhanced potential for anti-American violence given recent counterterrorism activity in Pakistan.' Anti-American sentiment was already boiling over in the Arab world yesterday, with Libyans storming the U.S. embassy there after a Nato bombing that nearly killed leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Indonesia braced for retaliation attacks 02 May 2011 Authorities in Indonesia are preparing for the possibility of retaliatory attacks from extremists with links to al-Qaeda following the death of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. Security forces in the world's most populous Muslim nation, already on edge following the discovery 10 days ago of a plot to blow up a church in Jakarta, as well as other recent terrorism threats, are now expected to remain on high alert.

Bill would require terror suspects to be held by military, even those arrested in the U.S. 01 May 2011 A bill in the House of Representatives, sponsored by Rep. Bobby Shilling, R-Ill., would require terrorism suspects, including those arrested in the United States, to be placed in military custody unless the Defense secretary rules otherwise. A Senate bill, sponsored by Arizona's John McCain and other Republicans, includes a similar provision that calls for "members of al-Qaeda, the Taliban and affiliated terrorist groups" to be held by the military when captured. The bill also would give authority to the Defense secretary -- not the attorney general -- to determine whether the suspect should be transferred to civilian custody.

WikiLeaks: Osama bin Laden 'protected' by Pakistani security --Pakistani security forces allegedly helped Osama bin Laden evade American troops for almost 10 years, according to secret US government files. 02 May 2011 American diplomats were told that one of the key reasons why they had failed to find bin Laden was that Pakistan's security services tipped him off whenever US troops approached. Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISID) also allegedly smuggled 'al-Qaeda' terrorists through airport security to help them avoid capture and sent a unit into Afghanistan to fight alongside the Taliban. The claims, made in leaked US government files obtained by Wikileaks, will add to questions over Pakistan's capacity to fight al-Qaeda. [HOW much money has the US given to Pakistan in the war on [of] terror?]

'No excuse for US presence in region' 02 May 2011 Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman says the news of Osama bin Laden's death has left the US and its allies with no excuse to stay in Afghanistan. "We hope that this development will end war, conflict, unrest and the death of innocent people, and help to establish peace and tranquility in the region," Ramin Mehmanparast said in a statement released on Monday. "This development (Bin Laden's death) clearly shows that there is no need for a major military deployment to counter one individual," he added.

Afghan police: Nato bombs private guards, kills five 03 May 2011 Nato troops clashed Tuesday with private security guards who were apparently escorting a supply convoy for international troops, sparking a firefight in which the alliance called an air strike that killed at least five of the guards, Afghan police said. Nato confirmed that an air strike was called in by a convoy involved in a firefight in Ghazni province in eastern Afghanistan, but it said initial reports suggested the strike was on insurgents.

Blast kills US-led soldier in Afghanistan 03 May 2011 A soldier from the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has been killed in an explosion in eastern Afghanistan, says a statement by the Western military alliance. ISAF announced in the early hours of Tuesday that the soldier was killed by an improvised bomb, Reuters reported.

Iraq: car bomb near cafe kills 16 in Baghdad 03 May 2011 A car bomb tore through a cafe packed with young men watching a football match Tuesday in Baghdad, killing at least 16 people, officials said. Most of the dead and wounded were young people watching a football match, said police and hospital officials. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information, said 37 people also were wounded.

Israel holds 'security drill' at airport 03 May 2011 Israel has reportedly conducted security maneuvers in a coastal airport amid fresh reports about Tel Aviv's plan for launching a new war. The exercises were conducted in Dov Airport, which was closed for about five hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (0800-1300 GMT) local time on Tuesday. Israeli citizens were asked to stay away from the airport and were cautioned that explosions would be heard during the drills.

Iran TV: Israel masses US air base 03 May 2011 Iranian state television said on Monday that the Israeli military aircraft were amassing at a US air base in Iraq for a possible strike on Iran. Israel denied any knowledge of such a plan and the Pentagon dismissed it as ridiculous.

'Israeli jets prepare in Iraq to strike Iran' 02 May 2011 Israeli jet fighters have reportedly conducted drills at a military base in Iraq in order to strike targets inside Iran. A considerable number of Israeli warplanes were seen at al-Asad base in Iraq, reported a source close to prominent Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sader's group. The aircraft reportedly included F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, and KC-10 jet fighters. The warplanes carried out their week-long exercises at nights, the same source added.

Israeli ordnance injures 3 Gaza children 03 May 2011 Three Palestinian children have been injured by Israeli ordnance that went off in the Gaza Strip. It was another incident where the detritus from previous battles and wars continues to harm the most vulnerable members of society. Israel has killed 1,300 Palestinian children since the year 2000, according to Richard Falk, the United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.

Levee detonation lowers river, triggers new lawsuit 03 May 2011 The effort to protect river towns in Illinois and Kentucky from rising floodwaters by blowing open a levee and inundating more than 100,000 acres of Missouri farmland appeared to be slowly working on Tuesday. The controversy surrounding the extraordinary demolition continued, with farmers affected by it filing suit.

Army Corps starts to blow up levee to flood 130,000 acres in Missouri --First phase to breech levee with explosives 'successful,' officer says 03 May 2011 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers installed more explosives early Tuesday that it will use to breach the Birds Point-New Madrid levee and divert floodwaters at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers onto Missouri farmland. The blasts, near the southern border between Missouri and Illinois, are part of a three-stage process to intentionally breach the levee -- and, in the process, pave the way for tons of water to flood 130,000 acres of Missouri farmland -- to alleviate pressure caused by historically high water levels in the rivers.
