Complexities in Roofing Work in J.N. Stadium :

Earlier the JNL Stadium was not having any roof over the stands and it was planned to provide a suspended roof over the existing Stadium so as not to disturb the existing Stadium by providing the support system away from the existing Stadium. This has resulted in having the cable roof from the new support extending up to 70 meters into the stands.  This is, so far will be largest similar membrane roof in the World, on completion.

Since the expertise was not available in India for undertaking such an innovative and ambitious project, CPWD had to take the help of international experts as well as Indian consultant for detailed designing as well as guiding the engineers during construction of highly intricate structural system.  The consultants engaged were M/s CES, a leading Indian Consultant in association with M/s SBP Germany (Structural Engineers), M/s GMP Germany (Sports Architect). M/s IG Tech. Germany (E&M Services).  The Indian consultants were made the leading consultant for transfer of technology as the designing, planning level.  The roof consultancy was provided through M/s Tensys, UK who are having vast experience in membrane roof work.  For quality assurance and construction guidance, M/s SBP Germany was engaged.

The roof system consists of supporting steel structure (V frame going up to 23 meters height and X frame going up to 43 meters high) consisting of highly sophisticated steel fabrication and erection works amounting to more than 8,500 Tonnes of steel works.  The 14 nos new approach ramps are placed in between V-frame and X frame for accessing the concourse which will able to provide an evacuation time lesser than 6 minutes as per international standards.

The whole Geometry was controlled using a global computerized model which provides X, Y  and Z coordinates of all the members while fabricating as well as during erection so that it finally matches with the geometry of the cables and the membrane which will follow.

The cable net structure working on bicycle wheel principal provides the support to the PTFE membrane roof by providing central tension ring and the "spokes" consisting of prefabricated cables which are supported on the X-frames and V-frames.  A series of radial ridge and radial valley cables and the accompanying ring cables along the inner edge of the roof complete the primary elements of the outer structure.  Radial ridge cables span from upper intersection of column and upper compression ring to the inner ring cable.  A second set of redial valley cables span from the lower intersection of inner columns and lower compression ring to the inner ring cable.  For cable works 443 tonnes pre-stretched cables of varying diameter from 40 mm to 95 mm were used.  The total length of wires used in cables is 2200 km i.e. the distance from Delhi to Bangalore.  Additionally the roof structure is supported on a system of cables and these having fabricated in Germany through M/s Pfeifer.  All the materials have been laid at site to the correct geometry.  In this case also the experts were needed to fit in the steel structure which has been fabricated and erected in Delhi but the cables produced and fabricated in Germany.  They will match with the designated locations at sites.  The fully locked cable was lifted from 68 no. heavy capacity Jacks supplied by VSL Switzerland from all the 44 points simultaneously.  The Jacks are installed at the Upper compression Rings around 43 meter above ground level.  All the Jacks are connected by 8 no. pumps in groups which are finally connected to a control room installed at the upper tier of the stadium.  The lifting of cables was done in stages and all the cables were lifted around 36 meter above the ground level. In the initial stages of lifting of radial ridge cables, 6 cranes were used from both the sides to maintain equilibrium.

The PTFE coated glass fibre membrane for roof cladding shows excellent features in terms of tensile strength and ant-adhesive eveled, to meet requirements of long lifetime and low maintenance.  The total area of membrane roofing is 54000 sqm. (Largest roof in Asia).  First time such kind of work has being done in India.  The more or less eveled single membrane surfaces of the roof have been used for light projections from catwalk and lower compression ring.  The over all area can be used for multi colouring illuminations.  The PTFE membrane has been manufactured in USA & fabricated at Tijuana (Mexico) and consists of 88 Panels.

The radial roof access walkways on top of the roof membrane are provided in the four roof "corners", leading the way through water tight man holes to the suspended catwalk. Public address system and architectural as well as flood lighting is arranged along the catwalk. Further to the lighting at the catwalk, flood lighting poles on top of the roof provide space for additional glare free fittings.  The length of catwalk is around 560 meter & it's weight is around 600 tonnes.

Road Safety and Traffic Rules Awareness Campaign by IHQ OF MoD (Army) Transport Unit ASC in Collaboration with Road Safety Cell, Delhi Police

New Delhi: July 26, 2010.

Integrated Headquarters of MoD (army) Transport Unit ASC is a premier unit of Army providing transport support round the clock throughout the year to the VVIPs of the Indian Army. This ASC unit has unique nom de plume to its credit ' Unit that never sleeps' that is to say at any given point of time during day or night some or the other vehicle of this unit is always out performing duty. With an incredible one million kilometers every month in ever changing traffic scenario on extremely busy roads of Delhi and NCR, this unit doesn't have the liberty to be complacent if it continuously wants to maintain its envious ' Accident free' record. Hence this ISO 9001 – 2000 certified unit keeps its drivers updated with latest changes in the traffic scenario in Delhi wherein the traffic infrastructure, landscape and traffic management strategies change everyday especially in light of forthcoming Commonwealth Games and in pursuit to make Delhi a world class city. The commissioning of new flyovers, foot over bridges, under passes, BRT corridors and metro routes can confuse the most seasoned drivers. But transport unit takes pride in its punctuality, user satisfaction and systematic preparation of drivers to take in this onerous task.

To accomplish above, this unit launched a Road Safety and Traffic Rules Awareness Campaign on 24 Jul 2010 for Army drivers in collaboration with Road Safety Cell, Delhi Traffic Police to educate drivers in aspects of Road Safety, traffic rules, defensive driving and above all with latest developments in Delhi related to traffic, its management and infrastructure development. A series of lectures, presentations, movies screening, case studies, posters and banner display formed part of the campaign. Drivers of all transport units in Delhi participated in the campaign which was also attended by Additional Director General Administration and Coordination of Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army), Maj Gen NM Rasquinha and Assistant Commissioner of Delhi Police, Mr Rajiv Ranjan.
