The outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist has called for a two-day strike across the country from Wednesday to protest the gunning down of their senior politburo member Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, top Maoist leader Kishenji said on Sunday.
Condemning the killing of Azad, at Adilabad in Andhra Pradesh by police on Friday, the leftwing party has decided to call a two-day 'Bharat Bandh', Koteshwar Rao alias Kishenji said from an undisclosed location.On the otherhand,The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) today announced a series of bandhs in Darjeeling hills beginning towards this month end demanding announcement of date for a tripartite meeting on formation of Gorkhaland. "The GJM has called a 24-hour bandh on July 25, 48-hour from July 28 and thereafter a 44-day-long shutdown to press for announcement of a date for a tripartite meeting," its General Secretary, Roshan Giri told reporters in Darjeeling.The bandhs were also aimed at strengthening the organisation, he said.

Choppers at more places in Naxal hit areas

With naxal attacks against security forces showing no let up, the government is planning to position helicopters at a few additional places for quick response to reinforcement and rescue needs.

To enable deployment of additional helicopters, officials of the central security forces and the Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand governments are scouting for safe helipad locations as close as possible to the battalion or company headquarters.

Helicopters of the Border Security Force (BSF) are presently stationed at Ranchi and Raipur, the state capitals of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

The existing BSF fleet of three to four Dhruv Advance Light Helicopters and two Mi-17 helicopters are deployed in supporting anti-naxal operations and the Home Ministry is planning to add some more helicopters to it. The new helipad sites surveyed in Chhattisgarh are Narayanpur and Kanker where the Army run Counter insurgency and Jungle Warfare school is located and one site at Gumla in Jharkhand.

These steps have been fast-tracked in the aftermath of the April six Dantewada naxal attack which killed 75 CRPF personnel and a Chhattisgarh policeman.

According to sources, helicopter support in naxal areas has helped save the lives of paramilitary and police personnel who were injured in naxal ambushes. A senior officer disclosed that two bleeding CRPF men among those ambushed in Dantewada were saved because of the timely airlift to a hospital by a BSF helicopter. "The helicopter is the best friend of troops in operation," the officer added.

While an Mi-17 can accommodate about 25-27 personnel, a Dhruv can carry ten to twelve men. The number of stretchered casualties that can be carried are far less.

According to sources, the new helipads will be "located close to the base of paramilitary or specialised combat forces so that the security and safety of these air assets can be ensured by these troops," a senior officer said.

The CPI (Maoist) on Sunday vowed to avenge the death of its top leader Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad in an encounter with police in Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh.

"Azad was murdered brutally by Intelligence Bureau of the Central Government and Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of Andhra Pradesh with complete knowledge of Union home minister P Chidambaram," a statement issued by the CPI (Maoist) said.

Hailing Azad, it said he has become the "mind and soul of Indian revolution through his consistent and efficient work" and vowed to avenge his death.

Azad, a senior member of CPI (Maoist) Central Committee as well as its spokesman, was killed along with another suspected Naxalite on July 2.

Azad, who carried a reward of Rs 12 lakh on his head, was allegedly involved in attempts on the lives of two former Andhra chief ministers N Chandrababu Naidu and N Janardhan Reddy.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Sunday there was no question of rolling back a recent fuel price hike. "No question of fuel price hike rollback," Mukherjee told reporters on the sidelines of a conference. India had freed up state-subsidised petrol prices and raised prices of other fuels in late June, as pressure to trim a budget deficit outweighed concerns about the political impact. However, the deregulation resulted in protests from opposition parties, and the main opposition Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has called a nation-wide strike on July 5.

Frequent travellers to India are in for quite a shock the next time they fly in to New Delhi's international airport with its new state-of-the-art terminal.

For years, arrivals at Delhi's main airport were greeted by the grim sight of dingy walls, dim lighting, congested counters and the smell of overflowing toilets when they went near a washroom.

But now, with the new Terminal 3, a futuristic 2.7-billion-dollar facility in glass-and-steel, the capital finally has a showcase airport that chimes with India's global aspirations.

The sky-lit terminal, one of the world's largest, "signals the arrival of a new India, committed to joining the ranks of modern industrialised nations," Premier Manmohan Singh said at the inauguration ceremony on Saturday.

Sprawling over four square kilometres (1.5 square miles), the terminal was completed by an Indian-led consortium in just 37 months -- a huge achievement in a country where major infrastructure projects regularly run years over schedule.

The operations of international airlines will start from this terminal from 16th of this month. This modern air terminal has the capacity to cater to 34 million passengers annually.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh called for bridging infrastructure deficit for speedy economic growth of the country.
Hailing the role of agencies and the civil aviating ministry for speedy completion of the terminal, Singh said the Airport, ranked 21st best Airportin the World, will soon be among the first ten best airport across the globe.
He said India needs huge investment in the infrastructure sector. He said $120 billion investment is needed only in aviation sector.
The Prime Minister asserted that the successful completion of the project has proved that the public private partnership model for infrastructure is very successful.
Dr. Manmohand Singh said that there will be phenomenal rise in the Air Traffic by 20-twenty. It is expected to touch between 160 to 180 million passengers in the domestic sector annually and 50 milion in the International.
UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who was also present on the occasion, complemented the agencies and the Ministry responsible for completion of the project and reiterated UPA pledge to provide cheap and better infrastructure and transportation facilities.
Earlier, the Civil aviation Minister Parful Patel said that Metro Airports in Mumbai and Kolkata will be ready by next year and 25 other non metro Air Ports will also be completed soon. Delhi Chief Minister, several Union Ministers and Member of Parliaments were present on the occasion.

"India has never been recognised as able to build an infrastructure project on time, but we have demonstrated that we are capable of beating anyone else -- and on this massive scale," said Aviation Minister Praful Patel.

"This is a demonstration of what India is truly capable."

The terminal will handle international and domestic travellers and is due to receive its first flight on July 14.

Built to coincide with Delhi's hosting of the Commonwealth Games in October, the facility boasts over 90 automated walkways and 20,000 square metres of shopping space.

It is a big morale booster for infrastructure project planners, said Kapil Kaul, who heads the Indian and Middle East division of the Center for Asian Pacific Aviation, a consulting firm.

While Delhi's sleek metro, now in the second phase of expansion, has been one of India's biggest building success stories, many infrastructure projects get mired in corruption, missed deadlines and ballooning costs.

"It shows what India can do -- it's a time to celebrate," Kaul said on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony.

"It's a game-changer -- this success can be achieved across all sectors," he said.

Constructed on nine levels, the terminal will be able to handle 34 million passengers a year -- a capacity urgently needed to cope with surging air traffic in the country of 1.2 billion people.

The government expects an annual 10 percent increase in domestic air passengers to 180 million by 2020, while it says international traffic could top 50 million in another decade.

Improving India's famously decrepit infrastructure -- crumbling roads, shabby airports, ramshackle railways and ports and erratic power supply -- is critical to accelerating growth, economists say.

The economy is expected to expand by at least 8.5 percent this year.

But infrastructure bottlenecks are seen as the main barrier to propelling growth to the double-digit levels the government says are a pre-requisite for dragging hundreds of millions of Indians out of poverty.

The airport terminal "highlights our country's resolve to bridge the infrastructure deficiencies in our country," Singh said.

It was built through a public-private partnership headed by south India-based GMR Group -- a financial model seen as the most viable for India to execute large infrastructure projects because it eases the burden on scarce government resources.

Terminal 3 "shows the world that, 'Yes, we can'," said GMR chairman G.M. Rao.

Delhiites could face some hardships in reaching their destinations tomorrow as the workers of opposition parties, including the Left and BJP, plan to block traffic in several parts of the city as part of their 'Bharat Bandh' against price rise.

The four Left parties -- CPI(M), CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc -- will organise a protest demonstration at the busy ITO Chowk, which connects east Delhi with the heart of the capital.

The Left parties will be joined by Samajwadi Party, Telugu Desam, JD(S), BJD, AIADMK and INLD in other parts of the country.

The Left parties will be organising protests at nine places in the capital while there will be three demonstrations in Ghaziabad and one in Noida. Out of the total 13 demonstrations by the Left, three will be organised by CPI(M) alone.

BJP will also organise protests across the city. In the main protest in Chandni Chowk, BJP president Nitin Gadkari and Rajnath Singh will take part.

Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta meanwhile appealed to managements to keep their schools closed tomorrow and requested parents not to send their children to schools.

"All shops will remain closed and only emergency services are exempt from the strike," Gupta said.

Trinamool will not support shutdown: Mamata Banerjee

Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Sunday criticised the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led Left Front for calling a 12-hour shutdown Monday in protest against the fuel price hike.
'We don't support this bandh. The bandh will not reduce the suffering of the common people,' Banerjee said.
While addressing mediapersons at her Kalighat residence, she asked: 'What good has the CPI-M-led Left Front government done in the last 34 years except doing bandh politics?'
'A one day bandh means a great loss to business. If they are so concerned with the fuel price hike then why is the state government not slashing the taxes it has imposed on fuel and cooking gas?' she asked.
'During the bandh, the supply of commodities comes to a halt resulting in crisis of basic amenities and subsequently the prices of the essential commodities goes up unnecessarily,' Banerjee said.
She said while the Left parties and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) jointly called a 12-hour nationwide strike July 5, the Maoists had also called a 48-hours shutdown July 7 and July 8. The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) had threatened to call 40-days long strike from Aug 2 in the three hilly sub-divisions of Darjeeling if the sixth rounds of tripartite talks were not held before July 24.
She said: 'What is happening in Bengal? If all the parties continue with their bandh programme there will be a shutdown of 200 days in a year.'
The union railway minister also cautioned the Left Front government saying 'If they try to impose the bandh forcefully then the common man will not accept it'.
'Trinamool Congress is the lone party to raise its voice against price hire of petroleum products. We even discussed with the union petroleum minister on this issue and also made it clear that we are not supporting it. But that doesn't mean we will call a bandh or support it,' Banerjee said.
Banerjee also accused the CPI-M of using the joint forces as a shield to capture the villages in the tribal dominated areas of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia and vowed to complain against it to the home minister.
'The CPI-M is using the joint forces operation as a shield to capture villages in West Midnapore and Purulia. West Bengal government is misleading the joint forces. CPI-M cadres are inflicting havoc on the common people in the Jangal Mahal area. The CPI-M is building its own camps in those villages. I will tell this to the union home minister,' Banerjee said.
'I have spoken with the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee,' said the railway minister.
The joint forces compromising of both Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the state police launched the anti-Maoist operations in June 2009, in parts of three West Bengal's districts - West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.

Dalit man raped minor daughter for three yrs; arrested

Bulandshahr, Jul 4 (PTI) A Dalit man was today arrested for allegedly raping her 13-year-old daughter several times during the last three years in Chattari area in the district, police said. The victim was living alone with her father, Dharamveer, in Runi village after her mother died four years ago, according to SO Chattari DK Sharma.
The girl was allegedly raped several times by her father, in his 50s, during the past three years, he said. When relatives came to know about the sexual assault on the minor girl, they took her with them.
But the accused brought her back after some time, he said. With the help of relatives, traumatised girl filed a complaint with the police, leading to the arrest.
The medical report of the girl was awaited, police said. PTI

RANCHI: Cricket fans here burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's wedding with childhood friend Sakshi Singh Rawat today.

The fans came out in streets and distributed sweets among themselves as soon as the news came that their idol will enter into wed-lock tonight.

One fan was relieved that Dhoni decided to marry a "girl-next-door".

"We are relieved today; he is marrying to a girl who is just like a girl next door ... three cheers for Dhoni and his life partner," said Anuj Kumar, a Dhoni fan.

Former players wished that the wedding would bring good omens in Dhoni's cricketing career.

"I am sure his marriage will spark him to do better at the 2011 World Cup as every step of Dhoni speaks of conviction and determination. I hope India wins the World Cup for the second time under Dhoni," ex-Ranji cricketer and former Bihar Cricket Association vice-president Daval Sahai said.

Sahai, whom Dhoni makes it a point to at least talk over phone whenever he is in Ranchi, said his performance would double as marriage brings "renewed vigour".

"Being a single is always dangerous, but Dhoni is relieved now from page-3-type gossip," said Om Ranjan Malviya, who once was a practice partner of the swashbuckling skipper.

An elated Adil Hussain, under whom Dhoni played for Central Coalfields Limited, said the Indian captain has always taken crucial decisions not only judiciously but also timely.

"He knows what system works for him. He keeps well behind the wickets, and he will also keep well as a husband too. Just wait and see how his marriage brings luck to his game," Hussein, a former Bihar Ranji captain, said.

"Normally marriage heralds a new dawn in every one's life. Therefore, the graph of the number one one-day batsman's performance will only go up," felt Ashok Ghosh, an ex-Ranji player.

Former left-arm spinner K V P Rao supported Dhoni's surprise engagement and then marriage in two days saying "the stumper knows his field placements, in matters pertaining to life too".

"At least now there will be somebody to look after him," he said while extending a happy married life to Dhoni and his life partner.

Dhoni's former coach Chanchal Bhattacharya said, "His childhood sweetheart must have inspired Dhoni to pick up the bat and now he has become the darling of Indian cricket; and now she will nudge him to place his hand on the World Cup."

Opposition National Democratic Alliance and the Left parties on Sunday geared up to enforce a "Bharat Bandh" on Monday in protest against the fuel price hike but the government firmly ruled out any rollback and slammed as unjustified the call for the nation-wide strike.

The top rebel leader, however, maintained that basic amenities like milk, vegetables, medicines and emergency services like railways, ambulance and fire services have been exempted from the shutdown.
Kishenji, chief of the CPI-Maoists military wing - Peoples' Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), said Azad, a spokesperson of the party, and his companion were not victims of a gunbattle with police, but were killed after being arrested.

He said: "Azad was arrested from Nagpur along with another Maoist Sukdeb, and taken 150 km to Adilabad where both were shot dead."

Delhi metro's high-speed airport line: Fly to IGI airport from Connaught Place in 20 mins

New Delhi: With the new terminal being opened by July 14, Delhi Metro is speeding up construction of the high speed metro link to the airport.

By September, commuters will be able to reach IGI from CP in 20 minutes. The civil construction of the line has been completed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the concessionaire is now in the process of setting up final systems like tracks, electrification, signalling, etc.

  Pranab sees double-digit economic growth in two years

  KOLKATA: Pinning hopes on a normal monsoon, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the Indian economy will expand by 8.5 per cent this fiscal and achieve double-digit growth in the next two years.
  
  "If the monsoon this year is favourable, then we will get 8.5 per cent (this year) and nine per cent plus next year and double digit growth thereafter in a sustainable manner," Mukherjee said at an event on financial inclusion organised by Assocham here.
  
  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had also said yesterday that the Indian economy is targeted to grow by double digits in the 2-3 years.
  
  During 2009-10, Indian economy grew at better than expected rate of 7.4 per cent. The GDP expanded over 8.6 per cent in the last quarter of the same fiscal.
  
  However, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), June rainfall was disappointing but still 60 per cent higher than in the same month a year ago. Monsoon rains were 16 per cent below normal in June, IMD had said.
  
  The economy had slowed down during 2008-09, after the global financial downturn impacted it and grew by just 6.7 per cent that year. However, stimulus provided by the government enabled the economy to recover, because of which the measures were partly withdrawn in the Budget for 2010-11.
  
  Mukherjee said he had resorted to the gradual exit from the stimulus measures taken at the time of economic downturn, considering the growth pattern of the economy.
  
  "I cannot remain on the ground by providing more and more stimulus," he said, adding that the stimulus packages, equivalent to three per cent of GDP, had paid dividends by arresting the decline in GDP growth.
  
  "This (the GDP growth) has happened because of the strategy adopted," he said.
  
  He said the government has targeted a fiscal deficit of 5.5 per cent of GDP this year (2010-11) and 4.1 per cent next year.
  
  Speaking about financial inclusion, the finance minister said that it was an economic necessity.
  
  Mukherjee also said that financial inclusion was a necessary condition for sustainable equitable growth.
  
  He added that the unique identification (UID) project would be a powerful tool towards financial inclusion as it would help in establishing identity of the people and meet know your customer (KYC) norms.
  
  To a query on the occasion, RBI deputy governor K C Chakrabarty ruled out powers to micro-finance institutions (MFIs) to take deposits.
  
  "MFIs cannot take deposits. If they want to, then MFIs will have to be regulated like a bank," Chakrabarty said.

  Maoist rebels may trigger Dantewada-style attacks in eastern India to avenge the killing of their top leader Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, intelligence reports suggest, said a senior police official Sunday. Following the intelligence inputs and ahead of the nationwide shutdown called Monday by the Maoists to protest the killing, police stations in all West Bengal districts have been alerted to foil any rebel attack, said Inspector General (Law and Order) Surojit Kar Purkayastha.     Besides, special precautionary measures have been put in place in the three western districts - West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia - which are considered Maoist hotbeds in West Bengal.     'We have alerted all police stations. But maximum security has been taken in the areas of these three districts where Maoists are active,' said Inspector General (Western Range) Zulfikar Hassan.     Azad, spokesperson of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist, was killed by the police in an alleged exchange of fire in the forests of Adilabad district in Andhra Pradesh Friday.     On April 6, Maoists massacred 76 security personnel in an ambush in Dantewada in Chhattisgarh. In another attack on Tuesday, they killed 27 security personnel in Narayanpur in the state.

  
  

  Not just fuel, shell out more for milk too

  Already hit by a hike in fuel prices, people in Delhi and the NCR now have to fork out more for their milk as well, with the biggest supplier Mother Dairy hiking prices by up to Rs 2 a litre. The increase comes on the heels of another supplier Amul raising the price by the same amount on Friday. Following the hike, one litre of full-cream milk of both the brands will now cost Rs 32 a litre in the national capital instead of Rs 30 earlier. One litre of toned milk in poly packs will cost Rs 24 instead of Rs 23, while a litre of toned vended milk will cost Rs 23 instead of Rs 22. Prices of double-toned and skimmed milk remain unchanged. Mother Dairy attributed the reason for increasing the prices to higher procurement costs. "Due to deficit monsoon last year, there has been a sharp rise in the prices of fodder which constitutes a major part of cost of milk production. This has led to a significant increase in the prices paid for procurement of fresh milk," a Mother Dairy spokesperson said. Over the last two years, Mother Dairy had increased the procurement price of fresh milk by about Rs 5 per litre. Other input costs towards packaging material, transportation and salary revision have also increased. "Yes, we are going to increase the price of full-cream milk in Delhi by Rs 2 a litre from today," Amul acting Managing Director R S Sodhi said. The price hike was necessary mainly because of higher procurement costs, which have gone up by 30 per cent from last year. Farmers have increased the price of fat by around Rs 100 per kg, Sodhi said. The recent hike announced by the government on petroleum products has also contributed to the cost push, he added. Dairy production in India, world's largest producer and consumer of milk, is projected to go up to 166 million tonnes (MT) by 2020 and would be between 180 MT and 200 MT by 2021-22. The milk production was 108.50 MT last year. The government is planning to launch a national dairy plan of Rs 17,371 crore to increase output to 180 mt by 2021-22 as demand is expected to reach 172mt by then.

  
  
  

  60pc credit to priority sector is for micro sector: Pranab

  KOLKATA: Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said that 60 per cent of credit extended to the priority sector will be earmarked for micro sector industries.
  
  Emphasising the importance of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector, Mukherjee said "60 per cent credit of the priority sector is to be earmarked for micro enterprises, with 10 per cent growth in the number of units to be covered."
  
  He said that PSU banks have opened thousands of branches in rural and remote areas, with the total number standing at 87,000 at present.
  
  "Another 2,000 habitats will be covered by 2012," the Finance Minister said while addressing the Indian Federation of Tiny Enterprises at the Bengal Chamber of Commerce here.
  
  Stating that the question of availability of quality credit at affordable rates to the priority sector would be addressed, Mukherjee said, adding that he had started the process of holding discussions in all regions with representatives of trade bodies, chief ministers and banks on the issue.
  
  "I have completed two rounds of discussion. The meetings of southern and central zones will be completed before the end of this month," he said.
  
  The minister said that 60 million Indians were employed in the priority sector and that there were 26 million such enterprises across the country.
  
  "One-third of the country's manufacturing output comes from this sector and there are around 6,000 products that such enterprises manufacture," Mukherjee said
  

  We are not fighting together with BJP: Left

  
  The Left parties, who have called for a nationwide shutdown Monday against the fuel price hike, Sunday asserted they were not fighting together with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has also called for a Bharat Bandh on the same day.
  "It is the Congress' strategy to brand that the Left parties and the BJP are fighting together against their government. It is not true. The Left has given call for the shutdown separately," senior Left leader S. Sudhakar Reddy said.
  He said the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance it leads had separately called for a strike.
  Earlier Sunday, veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani said that this was for the first time so many of political parties were coming together to call a Bharat Bandh.
  "We are not fighting together. It is true that we are fighting against the fuel price hike and price rise but separately," Reddy, who is the deputy general secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), said.
  He said that even the partners in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government like Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party have opposed the fuel price hike.
  Asked whether the Left would join hands with the BJP in future to fight the wrong policies of the UPA government, he replied with a categorical "No," but added that the political parties, cutting across party lines, were concerned over the fuel price hike and spiralling prices of essential commodities.
  "It is the political parties' responsibility to express the popular resentment," Reddy said.
  
  
  Authorities prepared to take all security measures to ensure there was no untoward incident during the strike, as the Opposition tried to make common cause in cornering the government as a build-up to a showdown during the coming monsoon session of Parliament.
  Normal life is likely to be affected though emergency services will not be disrupted. Essential services like milk, water, hospitals are exempt from participation in the bandh.
  
  Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee ruled out a rollback in the hike in prices of petroleum products and LPG even as his colleague and Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said the bandh is "not a solution" and that it was unjustfied.
  
  In New Delhi, top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA chalked out the strategy to enforce the bandh against fuel hike and the government's "failure" to control price rise.
  "This may be the first time in history of India's politics that almost all political parties will participate in the Bharat Bandh," NDA working chairperson L.K. Advani said after a meeting of the leaders.
  
  He gave credit to NDA convenor and Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav for bringing together even the non-NDA political parties for the one-day strike.
  
  The Left parties have also given a separate call for a "Bharat Bandh" on Monday.
  Most of the opposition parties minus the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Bahujan Samaj Party, the Lok Janasakthi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal are participating in the bandh.
  
  The participating parties are the BJP, the Shiv Sena, the Samajwadi Party, the JD(U), the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Forward Block, the Revolutionary Socialist Party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Telugu Desam Party, the Biju Janata Dal, the Janata Dal (Secular), the Asom Gana Parishad, the Akali Dal and the Indian National Lok Dal.
  
  In an attempt to make the strike a success, the BJP decided to send its senior leaders out to various State capitals to lead demonstrations and protest marches. Party president Nitin Gadkari and Rajnath Singh will lead the protest in New Delhi.
  
  Mr. Yadav also claimed that the agitation would be "extraordinary and unprecedented" as the people were "completely fed-up" with price rise.
  
  The Petroleum Ministry released advertisements in newspapers to send a message that the "Bharat Bandh" is not a solution. "Even after the price increase, the government will bear a financial burden of approximately Rs 53,000 crore during 2010-11," it said.
  
  Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said all security measures have been taken to ensure no untoward incident takes place.
  
  "Anyone who takes law into their hands and attempts to paralyse the city shall be dealt with strictly," warned Mr. Dayal.
  
  As the suburban trains are likely to be targeted by protestors supporting bandh, adequate number of Railway policemen would be deployed at stations for smooth functioning of service, police said.
  
  In the National Capital, people could face some hardships in reaching their destinations on Monday as the workers of opposition parties, including the Left and the BJP plan to block traffic in several parts of the city.
  
  The Left parties said the "Bharat Bandh" should serve as a warning to the government not to heap burden on the people like decontrolling petrol price.
  
  In a statement, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau appealed to all sections of the people to join the bandh and make it a big success.
  
  "This powerful all India protest action should serve as a warning to the government not to heap burdens on the people and to withdraw the price hike measures," it said.
  In a joint appeal, the four Left parties said they along with other secular democratic parties and opposition have called for the country-wide hartal to fight against the menace of price rise and government's "inaction" to tackle the issue.
  
  
  According to Kishenji, "Azad was on his way to Dandakaranya to attend the CPI-Maoists' central committee meeting when he was caught by the police."
  Kishenji said the top rebel leaders were to attend the party's central committee meeting to discuss developments in the context of Home Minister P Chidambaram's recent communication to Swami Agnivesh on talks with the Maoists.
  Criticising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chidambaram and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, Kishenji said, "It's apparent that the Centre does not want talks because it is speaking of dialogue and yet killing our members."
  With Azad's death, six out of 13 politburo members of the CPI-Maoist have either been eliminated or were behind bars, he said.
  Referring to the chief minister's meet convened July 24 to decide on whether to use the Indian Air Force (IAF) for anti-Maoist operations, Kishenji said the IAF should not be used against poor people.
  In an appeal to the IAF, the top Maoist leader said: "You are Indian citizens, you should not use your guns on the poor and innocent people."

      4.5 acres of land in Mumbai's Mulund suburb sold for Rs 200 cr

  MUMBAI: Kalpataru Builders has purchased 4.5 acres of land in a busy Mulund area for close to Rs 200 crore in one of the biggest real estate deals in the suburbs here, a source said.
  
  "Kalpataru builders has signed an agreement to buy 4.5 acres of land in Mulund that belongs to Schrader Duncan Ltd, a leading manufacturer of tyre tube valves and accessories," the source close to development said.
  
  The total land area is a little over 1.5 lakh square feet with a floor space index (FSI) of 2, the source said.
  
  Kalpataru Builders, however, did not reply to e-mail queries seeking confirmation of the deal.
  
  The land owner, Schrader Duncan Ltd, had shifted its automotive plant from Mulund to Ranjangaon, in Pune, in 2009, where commercial production has already started.
  
  Before that, the company had shifted its pneumatic division from Mulund to Mhape, in Navi Mumbai.
  
  According to a filing to the BSE, the company had sold 2 acres of land at the backside of the property for Rs 28 crore in December, 2006, to fund its new plant.
  
  Schrader Duncan is a joint Venture between Delhi-based Industrialist J P Goenka and Schrader Bridgeport International Inc, USA, which is a subsidiary of global engineering and manufacturing group, Tomkins PLC, UK.
  

  After new terminal, Delhi airport to have multi-level parking

  Driving to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here and worried about finding parking space? Not any more. Come July 16 and the new Terminal-3 (T3) will boast of the largest multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility in the country, with a capacity of 4,300 cars. 'For an infrastructure facility like an airport, a good parking facility becomes imperative for smooth traffic flow and a significant criterion for determining passenger comfort,' an official of Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said on the condition of anonymity. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday inaugurated the glitzy new T3 terminal at the IGI Airport, stated to be the sixth largest and among the most modern in the world, built in record 37 months at a cost of nearly $3 billion. The actual operations will however start only on July 16, well in time for the Commonwealth Games to be held in the capital in October. 'The combined parking facility at both the domestic and international terminal is around 2,000. MLCP is important because T3 will handle both international and domestic operations,' the DIAL official said. MLCP has been described as an effective space management system for solving parking woes all over the world. It can be described as a parking building, with multiple floors to park on, thus saving space and time for parking. 'At T3, the multi-level car parking will be ground plus a five-floor structure. With seven levels, the terrace will also be used for parking,' the official added. The ground floor of MLCP will be 19,263 sq metres and the other floors above will be 19,155 sq metres each. 'The parking structure will be well connected to the T3 building through a corridor at ground level and through an air-conditioned elevated sky walk with travelators,' the official added. MLCP will have four entry and exit gates at the ground floor, while the upper floors of the parking facility will have two entry and exit lanes. For faster traffic movement, MLCP will employ both electronic and static signages to guide the drivers to reach a vacant parking spot on the closest parking level. 'This will be supported by an electronic system called the Space Availability Display System (SADS),' the official added. The maximum time from the entry to a parking bay and from there to the exit point is expected to be approximately five minutes. According to DIAL, the entry into MLCP will be based on a semi-automatic ticketing system. Parking tickets will be dispensed through the automatic dispensers before entry and payments shall be taken through cash and credit cards. Another integrated system called the Airport Parking Payment System (APPS), will support the payments and calculation of usage time for parking. 'The parking facilities will also feature Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV), Public Address (PA) system and live Flight Information Display System (FIDS),' the official said. T3 will also include 78 aerobridges, 63 elevators, 35 escalators, 168 check-in counters, 95 immigration counters, and a high speed metro rail link to the city centre.

  In an interview with The Hindu, Gudsa Usendi, spokesperson of the Dandakarayna Special Zonal Committee of the CPI (Maoist) has questioned the official version of the events leading to the death of CPI (Maoist) Central Committee Spokesperson Azad in an encounter on July 2 in Adilabad, Andhra Pradesh.
  "Comrade Azad was picked up by the Andhra Police in Sitabirdi in Nagpur, taken to Adilabad, and shot in cold blood," Usendi said, "Azad's partner, Comrade Sitakka, is still missing. We fear that she may have been killed as well."
  According to the Andhra Pradesh police, Azad and another Maoist were killed in a firefight that began at 11:30 pm on July 1 and continued till 2:00 AM on July 2.
  In a telephonic interview on the night of June 3, Usendi alleged that the Andhra Pradesh police had tailed Azad for several days prior to the alleged encounter.
  According to Usendi, Azad was expected to arrive in the Upper Bastar region of Dandakaranya on July 2 and was to spend a month and a half there. "He was to take a class in Political Economy for our cadre and was going to schedule an interview with BBC's Hindi radio service," Usendi said, adding that the BBC was unaware of Azad's plans.
  Sahdev, a Maoist Commander from Chhattisgarh's Kanker district, was sent to meet Azad in Nagpur and escort him to Dandakaranya.
  On June 30, Usendi received a message that Azad had arrived in Nagpur and would meet Sahdev in Nagpur's Sitabirdi area on July 1 at either 11:30 AM or 1:30 PM. "That was the last message we exchanged," said Usendi. "Visiting Adilabad was never on the agenda."
  On July 2, the media broke the news of an encounter in which two Maoists were killed, one of whom was identified as Azad. "I immediately thought that the second man must be Sahdev and released the information to the media," said Usendi.
  But the following morning, he learnt that Sahdev had returned to the jungle. "Sahdev went to the rendezvous at both appointed times, but Azad was not there. So we believe that the police picked Azad up late night on June 30 or early on July1," Usendi said.
  Meanwhile, confusion persists regarding the second person killed in the encounter.
  While the body has been identified as freelance journalist Hem Chandra Pande, even the CPI (Maoist) is unable to explain why Pande was accompanying Azad. On July 3, a press release issued by the Northern Bureau of the CPI (Maoist) identified Pande as a zonal committee member. However, in a press conference in Delhi, Babita Pande insisted that her husband was not associated with the Maoists and had traveled to Nagpur to cover a story.
  On July 4, Gudsa Usendi informed The Hindu of a statement released by CPI (Maoist) Politburo member Comrade Sonu that identified Pande solely as a freelance journalist and alleged that Pande was killed by the police to eliminate all eyewitnesses. "I do not know if Pande was a member of the Northern Bureau," said Usendi, "It is possible that the July 3 press release [claiming Pande as a Maoist] was forged."

  India's biggest public building, a £2bn terminal at Indira Gandhi international airport in Delhi, opened at the weekend after seven days of religious ceremonies involving 300 priests, and last-minute polishing of its 500,000 square metres of granite floors.

  The steel and glass terminal is expected to handle 34 million passengers a year and will see its first arrival – a non-stop Air India flight from New York – in 10 days' time. It is bigger than Terminal Four in Madrid and T5 at Heathrow, but smaller than the terminal in Beijing opened to welcome visitors to the 2008 Olympics.

  The prime minister, Manmohan Singh, said at the inauguration: "An airport is often the first introduction to a country. A good airport will signal a new India, committed to joining the ranks of modern industrialised nations."

  Local authorities are hoping to finish several ambitious construction projects before the Commonwealth Games, due in Delhi in October. The games are seen as an opportunity to demonstrate India's new economic and political international weight. Other projects include stadiums, more metro lines, highways, bridges and a number of underpasses.

  In order to give the terminal's vast spaces local flavour, officials commissioned a vast Buddha head and a series of giant hands in poses drawn from Indian classical dance.

  The Delhi Bazaar area is supposed to reproduce the experience of shopping at a traditional Indian market – presumably without the spit stains, cacophony of hooting traffic and jostling crowds.

  The terminal was also designed to counter the extremes of Delhi's climate. "The roof is angled in such a way that will only allow northern light to come in," said Clare Brenner, the project's British architect.

  The nine-level terminal is equipped with the largest car park in India, accommodating 4,300 cars, and its own metro line. There are more than four miles of conveyor belts, and bridges to accommodate the giant double-decker Airbus A380 planes.

  Some have questioned the need for such expense when only a tiny fraction of India's 1.2bn population has ever flown and two-thirds do not have access to a toilet. The civil aviation minister, Praful Patel, said the terminal was "not just a building, it's a statement".

  New Delhi:  Major Opposition parties, including the Left and the BJP, have called for an all-India bandh on Monday against the rising prices. And it is adversely going to affect normal life in many cities.

  
  

  Authorities prepared to take all security measures to ensure there was no untoward incident during the strike. However, essential services like milk, water and hospitals are exempt from participation in the bandh.

  
  

  Public transport is likely to be hit in most places. Most schools, colleges and offices are likely to remain shut in many cities.

  
  

  In New Delhi, people could face some hardships in reaching their destinations as the workers of Opposition parties, including the Left and BJP, plan to block traffic in several parts of the city.Share on SocialGmail BuzzPrint

  
  

  The four Left parties - CPM, CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc - will organise a protest demonstration at the busy ITO Chowk, which connects east Delhi with the heart of the Capital.

  
  

  The Left parties will be organising protests at nine places in New Delhi while there will be three demonstrations in Ghaziabad and one in Noida. Out of the total 13 demonstrations by the Left, three will be organised by CPM alone.

  
  

  BJP will also organise protests across the city. Party president Nitin Gadkari and former BJP president Rajnath Singh will take part in the main protest at Chandni Chowk.

  
  

  Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta, meanwhile, appealed to managements to keep their schools closed on Monday and requested parents not to send their children to schools.

  
  

  In Mumbai, the authorities have put in elaborate security measures. The police have even made some preventive arrests and there is extra security for trains.

  
  

  "Anyone who takes law into their hands and attempts to paralyse the city shall be dealt with strictly," warned Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal.

  
  

  Also, adequate number of Railway policemen would be deployed at stations for smooth functioning of service, police said.

  
  

  In West Bengal, there are reports that private airlines may not run operations during the day, that is, between 6 am and 6 pm.

  
  

  In Rajasthan, markets will remain close on Monday to avoid any untoward incident. Also, the theatres will not screen films after 6 pm.

  
  

  Andhra Pradesh state transport buses will not run on Monday to avoid vandalism.

  
  

  Across the country, Opposition parties have called for a bandh on Monday against rising prices and the NDA is keen to get as many parties on board as possible. However, they have failed to put up a united front as both RJD chief Lalu Yadav and LJP chief Ramvilas Paswan have decided not to support the strike.

  
  

  The participating parties are BJP, Shiv Sena, Samajwadi Party, JD(U), CPM, CPI, Forward Block, RSP, AIADMK, PMK, MDMK, TDP, BJD, JD(S), AGP, Akali Dal and INLD.

  
  

  In an attempt to make Monday's strike a success, the BJP has decided to send its senior leaders out to various state capitals to lead demonstrations and protest marches.

  NDA will return to power in 2014: Nitin Gadkari

  NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari is confident that his party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will return to power in the Lok Sabha polls in 2014. He denies being remote-controlled by the RSS and claims the alliance crisis in Bihar is "almost over".

  
  

  Gadkari does not think that the multi-party NDA, which ruled India from 1998 to 2004, has been weakened because parties like the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) have left it.

  
  

  "It is a to and fro process," Gadkari told IANS in an exclusive interview at the BJP headquarters. "Some parties might have left, but some other parties are keen to come into the NDA."

  
  

  Can he name the parties keen to join the NDA? Gadkari: "We will disclose everything at the appropriate time."

  
  

  The 53-year-old politician insists that BJP cadres have been activated all across the country since he took charge of the main opposition party over six months ago, succeeding Rajnath Singh.

  
  

  "The mood is upbeat among party activists. The NDA will ride to power again at the centre," Gadkari said.

  
  

  He cites the opposition's decision to unite for Monday's 'Bharat bandh' to protest rising prices and the fuel price hike as a major achievement of his short tenure.

  
  

  "We have been able to assemble all the parties on the burning issue of soaring prices of essential commodities."

  
  

  But what about fissures with the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and his disparaging remarks about Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad?

  
  

  "It is a thing of the past. It is over," he replied. The BJP president had called the two politicians "barking dogs" for allegedly going soft on the government.

  
  

  Gadkari is also upbeat about his immediate challenge - the Bihar assembly polls due in October.

  
  

  "The crisis is almost over," he said about the rift between the BJP and JD-U Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

  
  

  What are the electoral chances of the alliance? "We will win. Hundred percent," he said.

  
  

  Gadkari, who became the BJP president after the party was routed in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, denied he had any problems with the party's star leader, L.K. Advani.

  
  

  "I had absolutely no issues with Advaniji or any other leader, seniors or juniors."

  
  

  Is his lack of experience at the national level a problem?

  
  

  "I think most of these impressions are created by a section of the media, which has its own perceptions, rather than the reality," he said.

  
  

  He denied he was remote-controlled by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in decision making.

  
  

  "Of course, the Sangh is part of my conviction and the past. But the talk that I am directed by the RSS is far from true," Gadkari said.

  Made of glass and steel, the swanky new Terminal 3 at Delhi's international airport is surrounded by dust and debris.

  India is out to impress the world with this mega-structure.

  Completed in record time, this is what the country hopes to show-off to the world when visitors arrive for the Commonwealth games 2010 later this year.

  It is all about the sheer size and scale, billed as one of the largest airports in the world.

  It is certainly bigger than anything India has ever seen. The terminal building is larger than the new terminals of Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore combined.

  It has eight levels, with a built-up area of 5.5 million square feet and an apron area of 6.3 million sqare feet.

  The common check-in concourse has 168 check-in counters and 98 immigration counters for international passengers.

  The terminal also has 78 aero bridges and a 100-room transit hotel.

  Prabhakar Rao is the head of airport development for Delhi international Airport, or Dial.

  He hopes that Delhi will become a regional hub.

  "Why should people go to Dubai or Changi as a regional hub, when Delhi is ready for them? I want to tell people come here and let us serve you instead," he says.

  Passenger traffic rates in India are among the highest in the world and are expected to double over the next five years.

  Invite to business

  As it is getting ready to open for business, the capacity of the airport has been increased to handle 60 million passengers per year and 75 aircrafts per hour.

  The current airport handles less than half that number.

  "We should not be building infrastructure for today's needs," says Mr Rao. "It should be built for the future.

  "Given the projected traffic growth, the capacity of the terminal is optimum. When we build the capacity, we automatically invite the business.

  Price worth paying

  The swanky new facilities are miles ahead of the existing Delhi airport.

  It is seen as a symbol of new India setting an example for public-private partnerships.

  Building costs have exceeded $2.7bn, higher than the earlier projected cost of $2bn.

  This has resulted in a funding shortfall, some of which will be paid for by charging travelers a higher airport user development fee.

  Passengers are already paying a user fee, but now passengers and airlines may have to pay more to use the new airport.

  Many budget carriers have expressed concerns about a potential increase in charges for landing, parking and navigation fees.

  But some passengers, such as frequent traveller Samir Singh, who flies between Bangkok and Delhi at least three times a month, say they do not mind paying more.

  A trader who travels with a lot of luggage, Mr Singh thinks the new airport will mean faster entry and exit and easier access to his baggage.

  Housewife Paromitra Banerjee agrees.

  She frequently travels with her two young children to London and France to meet her family.

  "If there are better and cleaner facilities for passengers, I wouldn't mind paying. Right now, it's just not a children friendly airport. I hope there are going to be play areas, more eateries and shopping areas where one can buy emergency products if necessary."

  Major contracts

  Delhi International Airport is a joint venture consortium led by GMR with a 54% stake.

  The Airports Authority of India has a 26% stake, Fraport holds 10% and Malaysia Airport owns the remaining 10% of the shares.

  A multinational team of almost 30,000 workers have been involved in the construction of the building.

  The scale of the project means it has presented huge business opportunities for a whole range of companies.

  The terminal has been designed by London architects HOK International. Another UK based firm, Brintons, supplied the 170,000 sqare metres of carpet material. It is said to be one of the largest carpet orders in the world.

  The duty-free outlets contract has gone to a joint venture company led by the Irish travel retailer Aer Rianta and its local partner Indian Duty Free Services.

  Aer Rianta was involved in setting up one of the largest duty free operators in the world, the Dubai Duty Free, and also runs retail units in major airports in Europe, Eastern Europe and North America.

  The 20,000 square metres of retail space will offer more than 1,000 brands - a mixture of Indian brands and international brands such as Versace, Mango, Swarovski and Marks and Spencer.

  A group of workers are busy walking around with hand-held thermometers to check the air conditioning levels in different corners of the terminal.
  

  Dubai-based ETA Engineering has been working on the air conditioning and plumbing of the new integrated domestic and international passenger terminal.

  R. K. Sahu is the senior project manager of the company in charge of the airport work.

  He has been involved in numerous projects in the Middle East, but says this is the biggest infrastructure work in India that the company has been involved in.

  "It's a fantastic project to be involved in," he says.

  "Every engineer, supervisor and worker felt proud to be working on it.

  Such projects also help stop the brain-drain from the country. Prior to this we just didn't have opportunities like this to showcase our talent and use the latest technology.

  "With this, everything has changed and hopefully this will set the trend for future infrastructure projects in the country."

  The country's largest telecom firm, Bharti Airtel, is providing the telephony and mobile services in the new terminal.

  This includes public call booths for domestic and international calls, charging stations for laptops and mobile phones and service desks to buy local phone cards.

  Experts have been brought in from Munich's international airport to help prepare the airport in the transfer from the old terminal to the new.

  The team has been training staff from the airlines, ground handlers and government agency staff like CISF, Immigration, and Customs from the existing terminals to familiarise them with the operations in the new building.

  Testing the terminal

  Sprawled around the arrival and departure areas are thousands of bags and old suitcases filled with old clothes and junk.

  This is part of a mock baggage handling run, where the bags are piled onto trolleys, taken around the terminal, put on conveyor belts and examined through screening machines.

  The fully automated baggage handling system is said to be able to handle 12,800 bags in an hour.

  People have also been involved intrial runs in the new airport.

  Some 15,000 volunteers pretending to be passengers and staff have been going through the terminal, testing every facility including the customs and immigration checks.

  Final polish

  The airport has set new standards in the construction business in the country with importance being given to greener and more eco-friendly materials.

  French company Saint-Gobain Gyproc has built the prefabricated walls and false ceilings around the terminal.

  The marketing manager of the company, N. E. Subramanian, says the project has forced suppliers local vendors to raise the bar when it comes to the quality of their products.

  "For all the companies involved, the work we have done in the terminal has become a showcase for our other clients."

  The airport is now getting its final polish before the doors open for the first passengers.

  The terminal will be opened for international operations from 14 July and for domestic operations from 31 July.

  Building India's lifelines has suddenly picked up pace. Long ignored, infrastructure projects are now being seen as huge opportunities for attracting investment and creating jobs.

  India has set a target of having 500 operational airports in the next decade.

  And if this project is anything to go by, the country's infrastructure looks like it is finally ready to take off.

  UPA only interested in protecting oil companies' interests: BJP

  BJP on Sunday alleged that the UPA government at the Centre is only interested in protecting the interests of oil marketing companies and not that of common people who have been hit hard following increase in prices of petroleum products.
  "Both Sonia Gandhi (UPA Chairperson) and her son Rahul Gandhi are only interested to protect oil marketing companies and not 'aam admi'", BJP president Nitin Gadkari told reporters after a state BJP legislators' meeting in Bangalore.
  Gadkari said the government had failed to contain prices of essential commodities and inflation has touched 13 per cent. The UPA government had become "insensitive" to the issue of price rise, he said.
  The party had chalked out strategy for a nation-wide strike call tomorrow against the Central government's "failure" to control price rise, he said.
  
  

  IAF modernises: Upgrade to SU-30 aircraft soon

  New Delhi Modernising its fighter jet fleet, the Indian Air Force is going to upgrade its SU-30 MKI combat aircraft with the help of Russia.
  "As part of IAF's modernisation programme, we are going to upgrade 50 Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft with help of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) from Russia," said Defence Ministry sources.
  "Su-30 MKIs have been inducted into the IAF in four phases. The ones to be upgraded are from the first phase and the project is likely to be completed in the next three to four years," they added.
  Of the 50 aircraft, around five would be sent to the Russian facilities while the remaining would undergo upgrading within India, they said. Under the modernisation programme, the aircraft will be upgraded to the latest standards and equipped with modern avionics and various other capabilities.
  "The airframe of these aircraft would also be strengthened to equip them with air-launched version of the 290 km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile," the sources said.
  The SU-30s were inducted into the IAF in late 90s and at present six squadrons of the aircraft are in service.
  The first squadron was of the Su-30 was of the 'K' variant but later they were also upgraded to the latest MKI version. Till now, the IAF has placed orders for around 280 of these heavy air-superiority aircraft of which over 100 have been inducted.
  IAF is already upgrading its two main fighter aircraft fleet of 60 MiG-29s and is about to sign an around USD two billion deal with France to modernise its 50 Mirage aircraft. The Jaguar, MiG-27 and MiG-21 fleets have already been upgraded by the force.
  

  Navy plans to buy submarine mine laying equipment

  New Delhi The Navy is planning to buy Submarine Mine Laying Equipment (SMILE) to augment existing capabilities of its conventional fleet.
  It has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to vendors and manufacturers seeking details in this regard, a Navy officer said in New Delhi on Sunday.
  The Navy at present has a fleet of 16 conventional submarines, but is in the process of adding a few more when the Scorpene submarines currently being built by Mazgaon Docks are ready for induction and a follow-on project of the type is ordered.
  The SMILE, according to the RFI, should be capable of laying 24 ground mines and withstand maximum underwater speeds of the submarine. The basic design of the SMILE should comprise components and sub-systems such as two independent magazines capable of housing at least 12 mines each.

  Case against Modi for alleged anti-Nehru remarks

  Bundi (Raj) July 4 (PTI) A defamation case has been filed by a Congress worker at a court here against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the country''s first prime minister Jahawarlal Nehru. The case was filed yesterday by Youth Congress state Secretary Charmesh Sharma at the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, which has decided to hear the matter on July 6.
  Sharma alleged that at a public meeting of the BJP at Gandhinagar in Gujarat on June 5, Modi had said that Nehru had "done nothing for children". The Congress activist said he and other followers and admirers of Nehru were "deeply heart and pained" by Modi''s comments which he had heard on a private television channel and read on a website.
  In the petition, he pointed out that Nehru''s birth anniversary on November 14 is observed as Children''s Day across India because of his contribution to child welfare. Sharma said he has enclosed video recording of the telecast and photocopies of the website report with his petition.
