Indian Premier League | IPL Cricket Betting

The Indian Premier League is a fairly new cricket League that was started in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket and India (BCCI). It is a championship league for Twenty20 cricket, sometimes called T20 cricket. The league began after a disagreement between the Indian Cricket League and the BCCI.

There are other Twenty20 championships that have modeled themselves after the IPL, such as Australias Big Bash League, the MiWay T20 Challenge in South Africa and the Bangladesh PL which is of course in Bangladesh.

It has gained popularity very quickly by offering quality matches that have brought fans within Indian and from abroad. The IPL has been valued somewhere between $3 and $4 billion as of the 5th season. The sport and league are so popular that it supports some of the highest salaries for sports players. The only league that has a higher salary is the National Basketball Association in North America. Where the average NBA player salary is $5.15 million, the average IPL salary is about $4 million. These are staggering figures which show how popular this league really is. This is truly remarkable given how young the IPL is compared to other sporting leagues. Looking for the 2013 IPL Schedule ?

Twenty20 Format

The Twenty20 format is popular in several cricket tournament formats. Sometimes called T20, it gets its name from the 20 maximum overs for each inning.  It usually takes about 2.5 hours to complete each match. This is an average length for most other organized spectator sports. Traditionally, cricket matches are much longer, many times spanning over 2 and 3 days. This can lead to incomplete games due to risking weather interruptions that may lead to a draw. Where overs are limited, a limit of 50 is typical, but games can last over 5 hours in total. The Twenty20 format has the spectator in mind as it helps to insure a conclusion and definitive result, win or loss in a game. The limited format, particularly to 20 overs, also keeps the matches from dragging out which can be rather boring to some spectators.

IPL Rules and Policy

The Indian Premier League has some rather strict governing policies that address corruption, doping (performance enhancing steroids), racism, codes of conduct, etc. The integrity of the game is highly important to maintain spectator value for the league as fans want to be assured they will be viewing competitive and exciting matches. The league acknowledges that IPL betting has increased with technology which allows people to place bets on games from anywhere in the world even during live games. They take a strict stance to insure that corruption is severely punished, but they work very hard prevent it from happening in the first place (although there is no shortage of scandals and accusations of match fixing). In an effort to maintain the integrity of the game according to IPL standards, the league also strictly enforces an anti-doping policy which applies to all players, as well as anyone who may assist with providing performance enhancing substances.

BCCI chief washes hands off the IPL controversy, says he will not resign!Amid calls for his resignation, BCCI president N Srinivasan said late on Friday night that he will not resign from his post in the wake of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan being arrested by the crime branch of the Mumbai police for his involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) betting-spot fixing scandal. In Kolkata, The top brass of the BCCI were huddled in a series of meetings during the day to discuss the raging IPL spot-fixing issue amid indications that the defiant N Srinivasan will hold on to his position as BCCI President.

We have seen the ultimate destination of every sting and every scam investigation.Nothing has happened till this date. The economy is opened and the floodgates of corruption remain unlocked. Everything wrong is set right just legalising it. Match fixing has to be legalised with making betting legal.

Worldwide IPL betting continues and the event is celebrated ,thus. It is business, Man!

Many have been arrested in the ongoing probe in the IPL spot-fixing scandal that has rocked the cricketing industry and exposed a betting racket that has managed to leave the nation in shock. But it makes no difference as far as BCCI chief is concerned! BCCI chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan  was arrested late on Friday night by the Mumbai Crime Branch for his alleged involvement in betting the IPL matches.

So what?

The move threatens the future of the Chennai Super Kings franchise and perhaps his father-in-law N Srinivasan as the BCCI top boss. There are growing calls for Srinivasan to quit as BCCI chief. Sources say Arun Jaitley may replace Srinivasan as interim BCCI chief.

But nothing happened.

It is learnt that some of the top BCCI officials met Srinivasan and have tried to convey to him that it would be better for the BCCI's image and the IPL's credibility if he steps down.

But top BCCI sources said that Srinivasan has shown no inclination to step down from the post as yet, maintaining that he had done no wrong.

The Tamil Nadu strongman has been under enormous pressure to quit after his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings CEO Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested for allegedly indulging in betting. Srinivasan is the owner of the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

BCCI vice-President Arun Jaitley also had a meeting with Srinivasan though it is not known exactly what was discussed by the two.

A Board press release stating that Srinivasan will hold a press conference at 4pm triggered off speculation that he may indeed step down on his own.

But it appeared unlikely that he would do so having only yesterday strongly rejected that possibility saying that nobody could bulldoze or railroad him into submitting a resignation.

Last night, a dinner hosted by Cricket Association of Bengal President Jagmohan Dalmiyabrought BCCI officials and state unit representatives face to face with Srinivasan.

BCCI officials, who attended the dinner, did not appear to be too keen to press for a change of leadership at the moment, sources said.

They said a consensus seemed to have emerged at the dinner against seeking Srinivasan's ouster at this juncture.

The BCCI members, many of whom owe allegiance to Srinivasan, have argued that there was no provision to suspend an incumbent president, in a clear attempt to dissuade the detractors from pursuing such a course.

Srinivasan, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, Dalmiya and former BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah had a prolonged discussion in a separate room and were among those who left the dinner late.

A top BCCI official said that Srinivasan's mood was that of defiance and he was not prepared to step down.

"It appears that he will not quit on his own. Some senior BCCI members will speak to him and then we will get a clear idea about what he wants to do," the official said on condition of anonymity.

We have been seen central agencies and parliamentary commeeties beside police engaged in investigation in so many cases. Just one case overlaps the other. Everyone has forgot bofors and all sets of defence scams. Bihar fodder scam is not remebered at all.

Indian private banks work as Swiss Bank and money laundering is unabated. Black money is made white with free flow of foreign capital. Foreign investment makes the money white.

Black money is just recycled.

Two G spectrum, Coal Gate Rail Gate involve the whole of the political class. Opting for cricket has helped Indian Market economy boost dumping hockey which fetched so many Olympic Golds. No country adopts cricket setting aside its culture. China and Japan and Korea, the mega sports power in Asia did not opt for cricket. Latin America sticks to football culture.

It is simply money making.

Imported Cheerleaders, escort girls and starlets have added the much needed sex quotient with abundant filmy glamour under huge political protection.IPL has seen so many scandals earlier. We have seen Lalit Modi and Shashi Tharur earlier. Everyone pointed accusing finger against BCCI president N Srinivasan . We have seen how Suresh Kalmadi is bailed out.

The nation was waiting to see the  BCCI president N Srinivasan behind bar, but as it happened in Bengal iv very recent past, the accused ministers , MPs enjoys their position and the investigation continues, it  is mind you the PONZI Scam which tore apart the fiscal monet making regulation in India and hundreds of chit fund companies continue the fishy business.

The IPL teams are sponsored by the Chit Fund companies and owned by them who do everything illegal including money laundering, betrayal, forgery, promoting, filming, helping extremists and anti national elements and are well connected to underworld and mafia raj across the borders.

Our superstars are engaged in betting and icons use their position to dupe the general public. It is no individual case. It is the system to make quick money for the affluent class. SEBI, IT, ED and Indian Finance ministry defend the system named money laundering.

Thus, BCCI president N Srinivasan addresses a press conference and is all set to illuminate the presentation ceremony after the final match in which the team which should be banned immediately, is all set to win!

Meanwhile,S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and two bookies remanded to two more days of police custody by court. Sreesanth has moved for a bail plea which will be heard by the court on 28 May.

Meanwhile cricketer Ankit Chavan and three bookies sent to judicial custody till June 4 by court in connection with the case.

Chavan has moved bail plea saying his wedding is scheduled on 2 June; the court will hear arguments for this plea on 28 May.

BCCI president N Srinivasan has promised a fair investigation by a three-member commission, which will include a person independent of the board, into the charges against Gurunath Meiyappan, the CSK official and Srinivasan's son-in-law who has been arrested, and the three Rajasthan Royals players allegedly involved in spot-fixing. Srinivasan said he would not be part of the commission and would not be part of its appointment or work.

In an interview given to the CNN-IBN television channel, Srinivassan said he had no intention of resigning. He was also quoted by the NDTV channel, as saying that Meiyappan's arrest was an attempt to target him through his son-in-law, and therefore, there was no question of him resigning.

The net closed in on Meiyappan after Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh's call records showed that he was in constant touch with the BCCI president's son-in-law. Vindoo was often seen sitting in VIP boxes, as an invitee of Meiyappan, during Super Kings matches in the IPL.

Meiyappan, who was untraceable for the past two days, was spotted at Srinivasan's farmhouse in Kodaikanal, some 500 km from Chennai on Friday. He left for Mumbai by a chartered flight from Madurai and was met there by the Crime Branch officials, who whisked him away to their south Mumbai office for questioning.

Questioned for over three hours, Meiyappan was confronted with the evidence against him and arrested around midnight.

Srinivasan remained in the line of fire with Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy and former International Cricket Council (ICC) and BCCI president Sharad Pawar's party Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) calling for his resignation as BCCI chief on moral grounds, though later the party seemed to distance itself from the demand made by a party spokesman.

Among other developments on Friday, a court granted Mumbai police custody of Vindoo till May 28 besides of two others — hawala operator Alpesh Taneja and a bookie, Prem Taneja.

Srinivasan said the commission would comprise an independent member and two of the following people: IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley, BCCI treasurer Ajay Shirke, board secretary Sanjay Jagdale, and former India captain and commentator Ravi Shastri. This commission, Srinivasan said, would be responsible for investigating and deciding whether Gurunath was an owner of the Super Kings franchise.

Gurunath had been part of the Super Kings table at IPL auctions, at team owners meetings with other franchises, present near the team dug-out and at post-match presentation ceremonies. His Twitter account bio said he was the "team principal" and several articles on the franchise website referred to him as "owner," as did his IPL accreditation. However, when Srinivasan was confronted by this question, his answer was evasive and ambiguous.

"We have appointed a commission and in my statement I said the commission will determine this aspect also, and he [Gurunath] has been travelling with the team, he's been enthusiastic, fine," Srinivasan said. "What his role was, whether it transcended any rule … I have already read in a statement saying that the commission that is appointed will also deal with it. So I don't want to say anything because there is an inquiry commission that will go into it. I am not going to sit and explain to you what his role was. India Cements, I understand, has already issued a statement on what his role was and what his role was not … So I don't think it is necessary for me to go further on this."

When questioned again on Gurunath's involvement with the Super Kings, Srinivasan said: "He [Gurunath] did not have any role at all. In fact, he never visited the office of the CSK. But he would go, he was enthusiastic. Let the commission find out. You asked me a question, I gave you a reply."

Given that two of the three members of the commission are going to be people with close links to the BCCI, Srinivasan was then asked about its ability to act objectively. His response was indignant. "You cannot presume that people in the board cannot act fairly or properly," he said. "That is the implication of your query, which I do not agree with. I am not going to be involved but there will be an independent person so it's not like the board only will be involved, there will be an independent person."

Persons who have been suspended by the BCCI, known defaulters, fugitives from the Indian justice system and other vested interests keen to discredit me and the BCCI, have indulged in a smear campaign in the last few days. The unfair attack has been relentless.

N Srinivasan

Srinivasan was speaking in Kolkata, four hours before the start of the IPL final. He began addressing a packed room of reporters by saying the last few days had been difficult for him as a father and father-in-law, but said his actions would be nothing but professional.

"I sit here as president of the BCCI and put aside all personal feelings. I can assure you that I will not shirk from my duty however difficult it may be," Srinivasan said. "The BCCI will act without fear or favour to investigate, and if the circumstances warrant, punish any player, match official, team management or franchise that have breached BCCI or IPL regulations.

"The disciplinary procedure under the operational rules shall be initiated and a commission, including at least one member who is entirely independent of the BCCI, will be formed to adjudicate whether Mr Gurunath is in breach of operational rules … the management of the other franchise Rajasthan Royals will also be subject to the same procedure.

"I am not part of this commission. I will not play any role in its appointment, deliberations or decisions. There has been a lot of media comment on clause 11.3 of the franchise agreement and whether Mr. Gurunath is an owner of the franchise. It is for this commission to look into this. The BCCI is very concerned by the allegations that have been made against the IPL, whether those relate to betting or spot fixing. As I have said on a number of occasions, the BCCI will act swiftly and sternly if the allegations are proven."

Srinivasan went on to stress on the principles of natural justice, that people are innocent until proven guilty, and accused the media of overstepping boundaries in their reporting of the issue. "Persons who have been suspended by the BCCI, known defaulters, fugitives from the Indian justice system and other vested interests keen to discredit me and the BCCI, have indulged in a smear campaign in the last few days. The unfair attack has been relentless. The TV news channels have been carrying unverifiable statements devoid of truth.

"An illustration of this type of news would be that there is going to be a divorce within the BCCI. I wish to ensure the cricketing world that this is completely untrue and that there is unity in the BCCI. I have not been asked by anybody to resign. To the contrary, my support is complete, and I refuse to yield to unfair and motivated attacks. I intend to continue my duties as president of the BCCI. It was trial by media for me, you know. If you saw the newspapers, TV channels the only thing they were discussing was my resignation."

Tip of the iceberg: Lalit Modi

This should be regarded as a wake-up call by global cricket authorities

The allegations of "spot-fixing" against three Indian players of the Indian Premier League (IPL) were merely a "tip of the iceberg" and should be regarded as a "wake-up call" by global cricket authorities, Lalit Modi, former IPL chairman told The Hindu.

Mr. Modi said he was "not surprised" given the amount of money that was floating around and a lack of any mechanism to monitor players.

Mr. Modi, it may be recalled, was forced out of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) because of allegations of tax evasion and corruption.

Calling for deterrent action against those involved in spot-fixing, he said: "It is time for world cricket authorities to wake up and formulate a tough policy."

The only way to rid the game of such malpractices was a policy of "zero tolerance" and strong governance, both of which were lacking now.

"I was the target of underworld because I had zero tolerance on match-fixing," he said.

Asked whether there were any whispers about match fixing or spot-fixing when he was incharge of IPL, Mr Modi said: "No, never. The IPL never had an issue with match-fixing in my time. The tournament was absolutely clean."

He said the Delhi police had not been in touch with him, and he had no idea who might have masterminded the betting syndicate behind the alleged spot-fixing.

Accusing the BCCI of lack of governance and transparency, he said: "There is no mechanism now, there is no governance in IPL.. Money was always there in sports worldwide but we took all precautions in IPL."

Mr. Modi was particularly critical of the BCCI president N. Srinivasan saying that such things were inevitable when global cricket was sought to be run from one Indian city.

"Global cricket is run out of Chennai and nobody is talking about Srinivasan's involvement in Chennai Super Kings."

Mr Modi, who was suspended by the BCCI in April 2010 for alleged financial irregularities, said he planned to return to India but only when he felt "secure."

"Of course, I plan to return. I will return as soon as I feel secure," he said.

Centre plans to make match-fixing a cognizable offence

The Centre intends to make fixing of spot or match a cognizable offence against those indulging in it — bookies, corporate houses or players — and is giving final shape to the standalone broad-based law that would punish any act, signal or contact which changes the course or outcome of the game.

Apart from bookies and betting syndicate influencing a game, the usual practice of winning a match by thin margin to eliminate a team from getting into next level could also be a cognizable offence. Once an offence is made cognizable, the criminal procedure code empowers police to register an FIR, investigate and arrest the accused without a warrant from a court.

Law minister Kapil Sibal on Saturday told mediapersons that Attorney General GE Vahanvati has endorsed his view that the Centre must enact an exclusive law to deal with the menace of spot and match-fixing offences as sports featuring in the legislative domain of the states did not cover crimes in sports, which has assumed both national and international ramifications.

Given the worldwide trend of providing stringent punishments for match-fixing and spot-fixing - most countries provide for imprisonment up to 10 years on conviction - it would be unlikely that the UPA government would propose a lenient sentence for such offences that take passionate cricket lovers for a ride.

Though the proposed law would cover all sporting events, including cricket, the UPA government's focus remained on the gentleman's game. Sibal said, "We cannot let down millions of fans for whom cricket is a passion, almost a religion."

The law would be as broad-based as possible to cover all kinds of malpractices, he said, and cited an example: it would be considered a corrupt practice if a team deliberately wins a match by a small margin to eliminate entry of another team to the next level on the basis of net run rate.

"Any act, signal or contact through technology or otherwise, which changes the course or outcome of a game, will be brought under the purview of the legislation," Sibal said.

BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who met Sibal along with IPL commissioner Rajiv Shukla to extend BCCI's support for the move, said that the proposed legislation "should seek to apply the principles of `insider trading' in the corporate world for cleansing the sports; namely, no sharing of information with outsiders for monetary consideration or otherwise, a deliberate contact with those involved in betting, and personal involvement in betting and rigging".

Insider trading in stock exchanges is a crime punishable with Rs 5 lakh penalty or up to three years of imprisonment.

Supporting the move for a separate law for dealing with unfair practices and crime in sports, Jaitley said, "Players and administrators of sports acting in collusion with bookies or betting syndicates for a consideration or otherwise need to be stringently penalized. Any law which intends to do it is welcome".

However, the present controversy relating to spot-fixing in the sixth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) would have to be dealt with under the provisions of Indian Penal Code and other penal laws like Public Gambling Act, 1967, as the proposed law would be prospective in application.

"How the police of different states were going to deal with the IPL controversy is their outlook and I am not here to advise them or the BCCI on this issue," Sibal said.

This declaration coupled with the lack of stringent provision to deal with the scale of the crime in IPL T20 tournament indicates that those accused in the crime - S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila,Ankeet Chavan, the bookies, go-betweens and corporate - may get away light even if charges were proved in court.

Inadequacy of IPC provisions convinced Attorney General G E Vahanvati to opine that it would be better if the Union government enacted a comprehensive legislation, Sibal said and declared that the Opposition as well as Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) were on board for a stringent law to curb.

The proposed legislation was in the final stages of drafting by the legislative department of law ministry. Once the exercise was completed, the draft law would be sent to the sports ministry, which would then consult experts and sports persons to ensure that maximum possible corrupt practices were brought under the rigour of the law.

"We hope to present the bill in this regard after completing all formalities in the monsoon session of Parliament," he added.

Full text of BCCI chief N Srinivasan's statement

KOLKATA: Following is the full text of BCCIPresident N Srinivasan's statement at the press conference on Sunday.

The last few days have been difficult for the BCCI and for me as the President. You will appreciate that these days have also been very difficult for me as a father and as father-in-law. However, I sit here as the President of the BCCI and put aside all personal feelings. I can assure you that I will not shirk from my duties.

However difficult it may be, the BCCI will act without fear and favour to investigate and, if the circumstances warrant, punish any player and match officials, team management or franchise that have breached BCCI or IPL regulation.

The BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit report on the allegation of spot-fixing by the Rajasthan Royals players S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and Amit Singh will be issued on time. The BCCI will continue to offer assistance to the police and if the inquries bring any suspicion on any other players.

With regard to Mr Gurunath M, the legal process has already started and he's facing police investigation. The BCCI has already taken the decision to provisionally suspend him from all activities in cricket and particularly from all involvement within CSK franchise.

The disciplinary procedure under the operational rules shall be initiated and the commission including at least one member who is entirely independent to the BCCI will be formed to adjudicate whether Mr Gurunath is in breach of rules that require all persons subject to the operational rules not to act in any way which would have an adverse effect on the image or the reputation of the BCCI or the IPL which would otherwise bring the entity into disrepute.

The management of the other franchise, the Rajasthan Royals, will also be subject to same procedure. I am not part of this commission and I will not play any role in its appointment, deliberations or decision.

If anyone is found in breach or liable under the operational rules ... the operation rules provide a number of potential sanctions ranging from fine to suspensions and in the extreme the termination of the franchise.

There has been a lot of media comment on Clause 11.3 of the franchise agreement and whether Mr Gurunath is an owner of the franchise. It is for this commission to look into this.

The BCCI is very concerned by the allegation that have been made concerning the IPL whether those relate to betting or spot-fixing. As I've said on a number of occasions, the BCCI will act firmly and strictly if the allegations are proven.

Under principles of natural justice, every person has a right to hearing and to be considered innocent until proven guilty. Some of the news reports, that have appeared have overstepped these bounds. I would request you all to be wary of trial by media.

Persons who have been suspended by the BCCI, known defaulters, fugitives from the Indian justice systems and other vested interests keen to discredit me and the BCCI have indulged in a smear campaign in the last few days.

The unfair attack has been directionless. TV news channels have been carrying unverifiable statements devoid of truth, may be with a view on their ratings. An illustration to the type of news is that there would be a revolt within the BCCI.

I wish to ensure to the cricketing world that this is completely untrue and there's unity in the BCCI. And I've not been asked by anybody to resign. To the contrary, my support is complete and I refuse to yield into unfair and motivated attacks. I intend to continue my duties as president of the BCCI.

The IPL is very important. It gives an opportunity for young Indian players to play with senior Indian and overseas players in front of capacity crowd. It helps bring a new audience to the game. This season over 21 lakh people bought tickets to watch matches. The IPL continues to contribute to the funds for the development of cricket in India.

In the last season, new world class stadia in Ranchi, Rajkot, Pune and Dharamsala have hosted international matches for the first time. These stadia were built using funds generated by the IPL.

Over 200 former cricketers have received a one-time benefit. The total amount spent were over a 100 crores rupees from funds generated by the IPL.

I do not want to minimise the problems facing the IPL. Indians have been very proud that our country has produced a league that is the envy of the world. The BCCI will take whatever steps necessary to justify the faith that the public have in the IPL and in Indian cricket.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our broadcast partners and sponsors who contrary to reports have stood by the BCCI and with the BCCI in these difficult times.

 2013 Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a league for Twenty20 cricket championship inIndia. It was initiated by Lalit Modi, who served as the league's first Chairman andCommissioner and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), headquartered in Mumbai,Maharashtra[1][2] and is supervised by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla,[3] who serves as the league's Chairman and Commissioner. It is currently contested by nine teams, consisting of players from around the cricketing world. It was started after an altercation between the BCCI and the Indian Cricket League.[4]

In 2010, IPL became the first sporting event ever to be broadcast live on YouTube.[5] Its brand value is estimated to be around US$2.99 billion in fifth season.[6] However, the league has been engulfed by series of Controversies where allegations of cricket betting, money laundering and spot fixing were witnessed.[7][8]

The Premier League is generally considered to be the world's showcase for Twenty20 cricket, a shorter format of cricket consisting only 20 overs. Top Indian and international players take part in IPL, contributing to what is the world's "richest cricket tournament".[9]

In 2012 the naming rights for the series was awarded to Pepsi.[10] Two eligible bids were received, with Pepsi winning over Airtel with a bid of INR 396.8 crore.[11]

History [edit]

First season [edit]

The inaugural season of the tournament started on 18 April 2008 and lasted for 43 days with 59 matches scheduled, out of which 58 took place and 1 was washed out due to rain. The final was played in DY Patil StadiumNerul, Navi Mumbai. Every team played each other both at home and away in a round-robin system. The top four ranking sides progressed to the knockout stage of semi-finals followed by a final.First winning team is Rajasthan RoyalRajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings in a thriller and emerged as the inaugural IPL champions.[12] The first match was against RCB vs KKR in which KKR had won with the man of the match as Brendon Mc'cullum with his sparkling 158 not out

Second season [edit]

The 2009 Indian Premier League season, also known as IPL 2, was the second season of the Indian Premier League. The tournament was hosted by South Africa because of the General Elections in India and was played for 37 days from 18 April to 24 May 2009. IPL 2 was forecast to have an estimated television audience of more than 200 million people in India alone. The top four ranking sides progressed to the knockout stage of semi-finals followed by a final. Deccan Chargers defeated Bangalore Royal Challengers in the final (these two were 8th and 7th respectively in the previous franchise).

Third season [edit]

The third season returned to India and It was the first IPL tournament that was broadcast live on YouTube . The final four matches of the tournament were screened in 3D across movie halls in India. Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians in the finals to win their first title. Lalit Modi was ousted by BCCI as so called Commissioner of IPL.

Fourth season [edit]

On 21 March 2010, it was announced in Chennai that two new teams from Pune and Kochi will be added to the IPL for the fourth season. However, the bid around the kochi franchisee turned controversial resulting in the resignation of minister, Shashi Tharoor from the Central Government and investigations by various departments of the Government of India into the financial dealings of IPL and the other existing franchisees. Later, Lalit Modi was also removed from IPL chairmanship by BCCI. On 5 December 2010, it was confirmed that Kochi will take part in the fourth season of IPL.[13]

The addition of teams representing Sahara Pune Warriors India and the Kochi Tuskers was to have increased the number of franchises from 8 to 10. The BCCI originally considered extending the tournament format used in previous season to ten teams, which would increase the number of matches from 60 to 94. Instead, the round-robin stage of the tournament was to have been replaced by a group stage with two groups of five, limiting the number of matches to 74.[14] But this format was replaced by another one in which each team would play 5 other teams in a two-way round robin format and there would be 2 teams against whom they would play only at home and remaining 2 teams against which they would play only away matches. Thus each team plays 14 matches.Top four teams would qualify for the semi-finals.

In October 2010, the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab had their franchises terminated for breaching ownership rules. The new Kochi franchise was also issued a warning to resolve all their ownership disputes.[15] Two months later both teams were finally allowed to take part in the 2011 edition after a court ruling.[16]

Chennai Super Kings won their second consecutive title after defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs in the final.[17]This is the first time a franchise has won two titles. The top four teams qualified for the 2011 Champions League Twenty20, which theMumbai Indians won.

Fifth season [edit]

The fifth season featured nine teams after the termination of the Kochi franchise and the players auction was held on 4 February 2012. The season saw an increase in the allowed maximum number of players in each squad from 30 to 33. The season of 76 matches began and ended in ChennaiTamil Nadu with the opening match on 4 April and the final on 27 May.[18] The Delhi DaredevilsKolkata Knight RidersMumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings qualified for the playoffs. The final of the season was played at the Chidambaram Stadium on 27 May, where the defending champions Chennai Super Kings played against Kolkata Knight Riders. Kolkata Knight Riders won the match in the last over riding on the backs of Manoj Tiwary and Shakib Al Hasan with 5 wickets and 2 balls to spare.

This edition of the IPL was the most competitive with 14 matches producing results in the very last over, and a couple in the last ball.[19][20] Towards the end of the league, the season faced various hurdles including a spot fixing case, which allegedly included 5 players caught on a sting operation carried on by a local news channel; India TV.[21] The fifth season is often considered as the most controversial Indian Premier League organized.[22]

Sixth season [edit]

Pepsi replaced DLF as the title sponsor. Nine teams are participating in the sixth season. The sixth season opened on 3 April 2013 with the player auction broadcast on Sony Six. 108 players were on offer but only 37 players were sold for US$ 11.87 million. The Australian all rounder Glenn Maxwell was the only million dollar buy. The Deccan Chargers franchise having been terminated by the IPL governing council, their spot was taken by the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The new team retains most of the players from the Deccan Chargers team. The tournament is scheduled to run from 3 April to 26 May 2013 with Kolkata and Delhi hosting the playoffs. Kolkata'sEden Gardens will host the first match as well as the final as they were the champions of the 2012 season. Due to protests in the state of Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalitha has requested the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh not to allow any Sri Lankan players, umpires or any other support staff to play in IPL matches to be held in Chennai.

Spot fixing has hit again with 3 players(ChandilaChavan and Sreesanth). On 16 May 2013, the Mumbai police arrested these three cricketers , on charges of spot-fixing during IPL 6. Vindu dara singh was also arrested on charges of spot-fixing during IPL 6.

The Chennai Super Kings , the Mumbai Indians , Rajasthan Royals and the Sunrisers Hyderabad were the four teams in the league stage to qualify for the playoffs .

On 21st May 2013, the Chennai Super Kings defeated the Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier in Delhi by 48 runs and became the first team through to the finals . [23] On the same day, Pune franchisee owner Sahara Group (owner of Pune Warriors India) decided to pull out of IPL. This decision was taken after Sahara failed to pay IPL dues.

On 22nd May 2013, the Rajasthan Royals defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator in Delhi by 4 wickets.[24] They now face the Mumbai Indians in Kolkata in the final qualifier

On 24 May 2013.Mumbai Indians defeated Rajasthan Royals in qualifier and they will face Chennai Super Kings in Final of IPL

Franchises [edit]

The winning bidders for the eight franchises were announced on 24 January 2008.[25] While the total base price for auction was US $400 million, the auction fetched US $723.59 million.[26]

On 21 March 2010, Pune and Kochi were unveiled as the two new franchises for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League. The base price was $225 million. While Pune was bought by Sahara Adventure Sports Group for $370 million, the Kochi franchise was bought by Rendezvous Sports World Limited for $333.3 million. The process was to have been completed on 7 March but was postponed by two weeks after many bidders and the BCCI objected to stiff financial clauses.[27] The second franchise auction fetched total $703 million.

The rights to the Hyderabad franchise were awarded to the Sun TV Network in October, 2012.[28]

Tournament Rules [edit]

There are 5 ways that a franchise can acquire a player: In the annual auction, signing domestic players, signing uncapped players, through trading, and signing replacements.[29][30] In the trading window, the player can only be traded with his consent. The franchise will have to pay the difference between the old contract price and the new contract price. If the new contract is worth more than the older one, then the difference will be shared between the player and the franchise selling the player.[31][32]

Some of the team composition rules are:

  • Minimum squad strength of 16 players plus one physio and a coach.
  • No more than 11 foreign players in the squad and maximum 4 foreign players should be in the playing eleven.
  • Minimum of 14 Indian players must be included in each squad.
  • A minimum of 6 players from the BCCI under-22 pool in each squad.

IPL games utilize television timeouts, hence there is no time limit for teams to complete their innings. However, there may be a penalty if the umpires find teams misusing this privilege at their own choice. Additionally, each team is given a two-and-a-half minute "strategic timeout" during each innings; one must be taken by the bowling team between the 6th to 10th overs, and the batting team between the 11th to 16th overs.[33]

The total spending cap for a franchisee in the first player auction was US $5 million. Under-22 players are to be remunerated with a minimum annual salary of US $20,000 while for others it is US $50,000.

Prize money [edit]

The IPL offers a total INR25 crore in prize money.[34]

  • Champions: INR10 crore
  • Runner-up: INR7.5 crore
  • Third place: INR3.75 crore
  • Fourth place: INR3.75 crore
  • No prize money for remaining teams

It must be noted that IPL rules mandate that half of the prize money must be given to the players.[35]

Sponsorships [edit]

The IPL is expected to bring the BCCI an income of approximately US$1.6 billion, over a period of five to ten years. All of these revenues are directed to a central pool, 40% of which will go to IPL itself, 54% to franchisees and 6% as prize money. The money will be distributed in these proportions until 2017, after which the share of IPL will be 50%, franchisees 45% and prize money 5%. The IPL signed up Kingfisher Airlines as the official umpire partner for the series in a INR106 crore (US$19 million) (approximately £15 million) deal. This deal sees the McDowells No.1 brand on all umpires' uniforms and also on the giant screens during third umpire decisions.[36]

Television rights [edit]

On 17 January 2008 it was announced that a consortium consisting of India's Sony Entertainment Television network and Singapore-based World Sport Group secured the global broadcasting rights of the Indian Premier League.[37] The record deal has a duration of ten years at a cost of US $1.026 billion. As part of the deal, the consortium will pay the BCCI US $918 million for the television broadcast rights and US $108 million for the promotion of the tournament.[38] This deal was challenged in the Bombay High Court by IPL, and got the ruling on its side. After losing the battle in court, Sony Entertainment Television signed a new contract with BCCI with Sony Entertainment Television paying INR8700 crore (US$1.6 billion) for 10 years. One of the reasons for payment of this huge amount is seen as the money required to subsidise IPL's move to South Africa which will be substantially more than the previous IPL. IPL had agreed to subsidise the difference in operating cost between India and South Africa as it decided to move to the African nation after the security concerns raised because of its coincidence with India's general elections.

20% of these proceeds would go to IPL, 8% as prize money and 72% would be distributed to the franchisees. The money would be distributed in these proportions until 2012, after which the IPL would go public and list its shares (But in March 2010, IPL decided not to go public).[39]

Sony-WSG then re-sold parts of the broadcasting rights geographically to other companies. It is officially broadcasted on Set MaxSet Six and in internet in Times internet.

On 4 March 2010 ITV announced it had secured the United Kingdom television rights for the 2010 Indian Premier League. ITV will televise 59 of the 60 IPL matches on its ITV4 free to air channel.[40]

On 1 April 2011, Rogers Media announced that it signed a four year exclusive deal in Canada to broadcast 36 group stage matches, 3 playoff matches and 1 championship match on its channel Sportsnet One.[41] In the 2012 season, its coverage will also include a weekly highlight show and four matches on its Omni Television multicultural stations, and the IPL Final will be broadcast on the mainSportsnet regional channels.[42]

Sponsorships [edit]

India's biggest property developer DLF Group paid 250 cr (around US$50 million) to be the title sponsor of the tournament for 5 years from 2008 to 2012.[50] Beginning in the 2013 season, the American food and beverage company PepsiCo took over title sponsorship in a new five-year deal valued at 396.8 cr, and also reached deals with eight IPL teams to become their exclusive beverage supplier for the 2013 season.[51][52]

Other year sponsorship agreements include a deal with motorcycle maker Hero Honda worth $22.5-million, one with PepsiCo worth $12.5-million, and a deal with beer and airline conglomerate Kingfisher at $26.5-million.[53]

Revenue and profits [edit]

The UK-based brand consultancy, Brand Finance, has valued the IPL at $4.13 billion in 2010.[54] It was valued at US$2.01 billion in 2009 by the same consultancy.[55]

There are disputed figures for the profitability of the teams. One analyst said that four teams out of the eight made a profit in 2009.[56]While The Times said that all but Kings XI Punjab made a profit.[57]

In 2010, the IPL expects to have 80 official merchandising deals. It has signed a deal with Swiss watchmaker Bandelier to make official watches for the IPL.[58]

According to a recent study by a UK-based brand valuation consultancy, the brand value of the IPL has more than doubled to USD 4.13 billion (over Rs 18,000 crore) from USD 2.01 billion in 2009.[59]

Controversy about tax exemption [edit]

A controversy was triggered when the Centre gave away potential revenue of INR 45 crore by granting exemption to International Cricket Council (ICC) on the revenue generated from the recently concluded World Cup Cricket Tournament.[60][61] In connection the PIL filed by Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai seeking a direction to the Maharashtra government and the Income Tax Department to recover entertainment tax from IPL. He also asked the petitioner to make Sharad Pawar a party if he wanted to make allegations against him as he headed the apex cricketing body two years ago.[62]

In August 2011, the then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Tuesday that the Income Tax Department is probing allegations of financial irregularities and "criminal activities" against some of the franchisees in the Indian Premier League (IPL)[63]

In June 2011, the Chennai High Court said it "could not appreciate" the tax exemption to the Indian Premier League and sought a response from Tamil Nadu government on the issue. The PIL filed by Vasan, alias Sakthi Vasan, had contended that the matches conducted by the IPL "are for the entertainment of the public. He submitted that the tickets for the IPL matches were being sold at exorbitant rates and the higher range of tickets are purchased by the rich and the affluent. The petitioner said the Income Tax Department was the authority for regulating the tariff for entertainment, which he said would include the IPL matches, but the department failed to regulate the (IPL) tariff.[64]

Mobile applications [edit]

DCI Mobile Studios (A division of Dot Com Infoway Limited), in conjunction with Sigma Ventures of Singapore, have jointly acquired the rights to be the exclusive Mobile Application partner and rights holder for the Indian Premier League cricket matches worldwide for the next 8 years (including the 2017 season). Recently[when?], they have released the IPL T20 Mobile applications for iPhoneNokiaSmartphones and BlackBerry devices. Soon it will be made available across all other major Mobile platforms including the Android,Windows MobilePalm & others.[65]

Official website [edit]

The IPL negotiated a contract with the Canadian company Live Current Media Inc. to run and operate its portals and the minimum guarantee has been negotiated at US $50 million over the next 10 years.[66] The official website of the tournament is www.iplt20.com. Incorporating popular forms of social media, the website now contains a more holistic presence across all online mediums to empower user interaction.

Global interest [edit]

The third season of the IPL saw interest rise dramatically in the United Kingdom, due to telecasts being moved from the subscription-based Setanta Sports to the free-to-air ITV4. Lalit Modi, then Chairman and Commissioner, also expressed immense satisfaction on the way IPL has been accepted by the British audience. "ITV beats Sky Sports over the weekend in number of viewers. This is great going. The ITV numbers are double that of rugby league. This is huge by all imaginations. UK figures for viewership on ITV already 10 times that of last year. This is just fantastic news," he said.[67]

Issues [edit]

  • Spot Fixing in IPL-6 by few members of Rajasthan Royals team namely S.Sreesanth,Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan
  • Following this, Rajasthan Royals filed FIR against S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan for violating contract
  • Sources say the Mumbai Police has strong evidence against Gurunath Meiyappan(CEO of Chennai Super Kings) audio CDs of his conversations with Vindoo Dara Singh and also CCTV footage of the meetings between the two.
  • Sources say if in the course of questioning Gurunath Meiyappan, it appears that there is some truth in Vindoo Dara Singh's claims, and the police manage to establish complicity, the police may even go ahead and place Meiyappan under arrest.
  • CSK CEO Gurunath Meiyappan has left for Madurai to take a flight to Mumbai while his father-in-law and BCCI chief N Srinivasan stays back in Kodaikanal.
  • BCCI Disciplinary Committee chief Arun Jaitley met IPL chief Rajeev Shukla over IPL spot-fixing scandal. Rajeev Shukla said the two leaders met Law Minister Kapil Sibal and asked him to bring a strong law to stop spot-fixing at the earliest.
  • An alleged cricket bookie was nabbed from the international airport in Hyderabad by a Delhi Police team in the early hours on Friday. "One person identified as Yahya Mohammad has been picked up from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in connection with the cricket betting racket by the Delhi Police team in the wee hours," a senior police official said.
  • The Mumbai Police has rejected Gurunath Meiyappan's plea to appear for questioning on Monday, according to sources. Police sources say Meiyappan has to appear for questioning by 5 pm May 25th 2013.
  • Mumbai Police sources are now indicating that they will not entertain Chennai Super Kings CEO Gurunath Meiyappan's request for extension of the deadline to appear for questioning. Mumbai Police sources say Meiyappan must adhere to today's 5 pm deadline to appear for questioning.
  • Arrested actor Vindoo Dara Singh is being taken to the Mumbai Police office. His custody ends today and sources say the police will seek an extension of his custody.
  • More shocking revelations are coming out from the probe into the Indian Premier League illegal betting scandal and also the spot-fixing scandal. Mumbai Police sources now say Chennai Super Kings CEO and BCCI chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan started placing bets on IPL matches in 2011. Sources say actor Vindoo Dara Singh's interrogation has revealed that Gurunath started with bets of Rs 10 lakh that went upto Rs 1 crore per match. Sources also add that Gurunath placed bets on three CSK matches this season and also placed bets on other games.
  • The Delhi Police has made it clear that no foreign player is involved in the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scandal. "No foreign player's name has come up in our investigation," Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said. He said 12 bookies and three players - S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan - have been arrested so far in the case.
  • Gurunath Meiyappan was served summons by the Mumbai Police on Thursday to appear before investigators in Mumbai. Meiyappan though has asked for time till Monday. He is alleged to have been involved in cricket betting. Sources have told CNN-IBN that he is unlikely to be questioned till the IPL is over.
  • Meanwhile, according to the police, the call records of Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh, who was arrested in the IPL betting case on Tuesday, indicated he had made several calls to Chennai and some to Meiyappan. Vindoo Dara Singh's custody also ends on Friday.
  • All through Thursday, even as dramatic scenes were witnessed at the residence Meiyappan, his whereabouts remained unknown. Besides serving a notice at Gurunath's residence, a copy was also served to a manager in his office.
  • Sources said that Vindoo on Thursday dropped several names during his interrogation, including those of film stars. However, no star is likely to be summoned as his claims haven't been verified yet, the police said. The focus is on Meiyappan as police have corroborative evidence against him.
  • With the focus now on Meiyappan, pressure is also growing on BCCI chief N Srinivasan to either step down or come clean in his conflict of interest. Former Vice President of BCCI Kamal Morarka spoke to IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai and said separate functioning of the BCCI and the IPL will help in bringing more transparency.
