U.S. Planning Troop Buildup in Gulf After 'Exit' From Iraq --Plans under discussion for months 30 Oct 2011 The Obama administration plans to bolster the American military presence in the Persian Gulf after it withdraws the remaining troops from Iraq this year, according to officials and diplomats. After unsuccessfully pressing both the Obama administration and the Iraqi government to permit as many as 20,000 American troops to remain in Iraq beyond 2011, the Pentagon is now drawing up an alternative. In addition to negotiations over maintaining a ground combat presence in Kuwait, the United States is considering sending more naval warships through international waters in the region.

US Quietly Assumes Military Posture in Africa 28 Oct 2011 The United States is playing a growing role in Africa's military battles, using special forces advisers, drones and tens of millions of dollars in military aid to combat a growing and multifaceted 'security threat.' Once again, the focus is Somalia, the nation that was the site of America's last large-scale military intervention in Africa in the early 1990s. The United States is providing intelligence and training to fight militants across the continent, from Mauritania in the west along the Atlantic coast, to Somalia in the east along the Indian Ocean.

Western Companies See Prospects for Business in Libya 29 Oct 2011 The guns in Libya have barely quieted, and NATO's military assistance to the rebellion coup that toppled Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi will not end officially until Monday. But a new invasion force is already plotting its own landing on the shores of Tripoli. Western security, construction and infrastructure companies [mercenaries and corpora-terrorists] that see profit-making opportunities receding in Iraq and Afghanistan have turned their sights on Libya. Entrepreneurs are abuzz about the business potential of a country with huge needs and the oil to pay for them.

'US no authority to challenge Iran Navy' 29 Oct 2011 A senior Iranian naval commander says the Americans are not in the position to comment on Iran's presence in international waters and the country's naval fleets will continue to sail the high seas. Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said on Saturday that all countries can be present in international waters based on global regulations. "Their (US) reaction to Iran's presence in international waters is as if Iran's Army has never sailed the high seas," Fars News Agency quoted the Iranian commander.

At least 17 killed in Kabul bomb attack 29 Oct 2011 At least 17 people were killed in central Kabul on Saturday when a suicide bomber struck a vehicle in a military convoy, according to officials. Five troops and eight civilians were killed in the attack, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said. Afghan officials said four Afghans, including two students, were also killed. Among the dead was Master Corporal Byron Greff, a Canadian, according to the Canadian Expeditionary Force Command. It was not immediately clear whether he was included in the ISAF-provided figure.

Afghan soldier kills 2 US-led troops 29 Oct 2021 The US-led NATO force says a man dressed in Afghan army uniform has shot dead two foreign troops in southern Afghanistan. "Two International Security Assistance Force service members were killed today in southern Afghanistan when an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform apparently turned his weapon on Afghan and coalition forces," AFP cited a brief statement released by the Western military contingent on Saturday. The military force said the shooter was also killed in the incident.

US support for Afghan war hits new low 28 Oct 2011 A recent poll suggests that American public support for the US war in Afghanistan has hit a new record low. According to the CNN/ORC poll, only 34 percent of the American public supports the ten-year-old war in Afghanistan. The new figure is one point less than the previous all time low of 35 percent. The poll shows that about 63 percent of Americans oppose the war, and that 57 percent say it was not a mistake to send military forces to Afghanistan in October 2001, only weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

Lithuania to be investigated for CIA rendition links --Investigation by Lithuanian legislators two years ago found two CIA prisons set up in Baltic state 28 Oct 2011 Lawyers for an alleged al-Qaeda facilitator have filed a case against Lithuania at Europe's court of human rights over torture and secret detention at a CIA-run site in the Baltic state. Abu Zubaydah, a Palestinian currently being held by the US at Guantanamo Bay, hopes the suit will force Lithuanian authorities to reopen their investigation into secret CIA facilities and victims of torture, according to Interights, a London-based human rights protection group.

CIA, Other Spy Agencies Spent $54.6 Billion In Secret For 2011 28 Oct 2011 Congress appropriated a whopping $54.6 billion for classified intelligence operations in 2011, an increase over the previous two years. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper -- whose office was created after the 9/11 attacks to oversee the government's 16 intelligence agencies -- made the disclosure in a dry news release Friday. The top line number represents the aggregate amount of money lawmakers doled out for the National Intelligence Program's black budget last year.

NORAD conducts exercise flights over upstate NY 28 Oct 2011 The North American Aerospace Defense Command says it is conducting military exercise flights over northern New York. Officials say people between Plattsburgh and Watertown may hear or see fighter jets Friday morning as part of the training. The military command, known as NORAD, is a joint Canadian and American operation. [Lets hope they don't 'go live,' as they did on 9/11!]

Japan's Fukushima plant dismantling needs over 30 yrs --Subcommittee of Atomic Energy Commission called for removal of melted nuclear fuel rods to start within 10 years 28 Oct 2011 Japan will likely need more than 30 years to dismantle the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, the Atomic Energy Commission said on Friday, underscoring its prolonged challenges after the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. A massive earthquake and tsunami in March knocked out cooling functions at Tokyo Electric Power Co's (Tepco) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, causing fuel rod meltdowns and [massive] radiation leakage into the atmosphere.

Chevron third-quarter profit doubles to $7.8 billion, production dips 28 Oct 2011 Chevron Corp. said Friday its third-quarter profit doubled to $7.8 billion, or $3.92 a share, from $3.8 billion, or $1.87 a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue increased to $64.4 billion, from $49.7 billion, on higher crude oil prices. Net oil equivalent production fell by 109,000 barrels per day to 1.94 million barrels a day. "We had another successful quarter," said Chairman and CEO John Watson.

Generators taken from NY anti-Wall St protesters --NY protest loses generators a day before first snow due --Analysts say Bloomberg's strategy simple - 'no violence' [LOL! Someone should tell the NYPD.] 28 Oct 2011 Anti-Wall Street protesters' plans to camp in a New York park throughout the city's harsh winter were dealt a blow on Friday when the fire department confiscated generators and fuel because they 'posed a danger.' With the first snow forecast to fall on Saturday, the Occupy Wall Street movement against economic inequality lost the generators that had been powering heat, computers and a kitchen in the Lower Manhattan camp they set up six weeks ago.

Occupy Wall Street: Arrests in Nashville and San Diego 28 Oct 2011 Protesters in two US cities have been detained after police moved into their camps during the night. In Nashville, a new law was enacted preventing camping overnight near the Tennessee state Capitol. In San Diego, police arrested 51 people at 02:30 (9:30 GMT), removing tents, canopies, tables and other furniture. On the US East Coast, many of those taking part in Occupy protests are preparing for an unseasonably cold storm due to hit this weekend. As much as 10in (25cm) of snow is expected in some areas on Saturday, with between two and four inches forecast for New York City.

Police In Riot Gear Remove 'Occupy SD' Protesters --Occupy San Diego Protesters Removed For 'Unlawful Assembly' 28 Oct 2011 A legion of officers in riot gear cleared Occupy San Diego protesters out of their unauthorized urban squatters' camp at Civic Center Plaza early Friday, arresting dozens of activists who refused to cooperate with the predawn expulsion. The dismantling of the downtown tent community, deemed an unlawful assembly by the city, began about 2 a.m. and lasted roughly 45 minutes, according to San Diego police.

U.S. Vets, Suffering From Unemployment and Homelessness, Support Occupy Protests 29 Oct 2011 Scott Olsen, the 24-year-old two-tour Iraq veteran whose skull was fractured by a rubber bullet or tear gas canister fired by police during an Occupy Oakland protest, has become a symbol for the Oakland, Calif., protests and put a spotlight on veterans' solidarity with the Occupy movement...  Chapters of Iraq Veterans Against the War have engaged in Occupy movements across the nation as representatives of the organization. They say they are part of the 99 percent and share the sentiments of the movement.

Poll: Clinton favored over 2012 GOP candidates 27 Oct 2011 People can't help but wonder what might happen if Hillary Rodham Clinton ran again for president. A new Time Magazine poll shows Clinton easily defeating the major Republican candidates, were she somehow to become the 2012 Democratic nominee for president. Clinton leads Mitt Romney, 55% to 38%; Rick Perry, 58% to 32%; and Herman Cain, 56% to 34%, among likely voters in a general election.

Storm Leaves More Than 2 Million Without Power 31 Oct 2011 Residents in many towns across the Northeast found themselves without power on Sunday after an unusual autumn storm dumped record amounts of snow. More than 2.3 million customers from Pennsylvania through New England had no electricity, according to reports, as the region was lashed by surprisingly high winds and snowdrifts. In Manhattan, tree branches snapped under the weight of wet snow, piling up along 5th Avenue and toppling across and obstructing the walkways of Central Park.

Conn. Governor Declares State of Emergency; More Than 820,000 Without Power In Historic Storm 30 Oct 2011 Connecticut residents woke Sunday to a devastated landscape of downed power lines and fallen trees frighteningly reminiscent of the days following Tropical Storm Irene two months ago. More than 820,000 customers were without power statewide, and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the extent of the outages was worse than Irene, which cut power to 767,000 power company customers. Malloy has asked President Obama to declare Connecticut a disaster area so that it can qualify for federal assistance.
