Dear Colleagues,
The Campaign Against Death Penalty in Madurai ( A Sleepless Night Campaign) comprising several organizations in the city of Madurai and convened by a team of conveners comprising Mr. Radhakrishnan ( CPI Party), Advocate Bhagat Singh (Advocate, Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court), Prof Vijayakumar (Former Secretary of MUTA), Mr. Seeni Ahmed (National League) Dr. I. Devasahayam, (People's Watch) Fr. Paul Britto, (RC Diocese of Madurai) Mr. Samathuvam (Makkal Satta Arivu Parapagam, Arupukkottai) Ms. Sasikala (CHRM) co-ordinated by Mr. C J Rajan, Director, Tamilnadu Program of Human Rights and Democracy of PW had together organized a one night vigil against the death penalty against Mr. Perarivalan, Santhan and Murugan in Vellore Central jail from 7 PM on 1st October 2011 to 5.30 PM on 2nd October 2011.
The memorandum that had been signed by all the participants to the vigil [numbering over 4000 at one point of time and almost 1000 at 5.30 AM when it culminated] was taken from the PUCL memorandum that was presented to the CM of Tamilnadu. The copy of the memorandum is also annexed here for the value that this campaign gives to the PUCL memorandum.
The main demand is that the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu use powers for clemency under Sec 45 r/w 55A of the Indian Penal Code and Sec 433(a) r/w 432 (7) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. We are also of the demand that the NHRC which has powers to intervene in matters relating to human rights pending before courts with the permission of the court, should intervene positively before the Madras High Court where writ petitions challenging the death penalty against the three on the death row have been field and are presently being argued.
Clippings and photographs of the same are to be found as follows :
