The Left Front's 34-year rule in West Bengal is set to end with the Trinamool Congress-led alliance likely to win three-fourths of the seats, according toexit polls and post-poll surveys by various media outfits.

While unanimous on this, the polls released on Tuesday differed on what will happen in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam and were silent on the outcome in Puducherry.

Two exit polls, done by AC Nielsen for Star Ananda and by CVoter for a host of media organizations, as well as two post-poll surveys done by CSDS for CNN-IBN and Week and by ORG for Headlines Today, gave the Mamata Banerjee-led alliance between 210 and 235 of the 294 seats in the West Bengal assembly.

Not all of them gave a break-up for the alliance, but if their projections come true, it would mean the Trinamool Congress alone would have a comfortable majority in the assembly, which may be almost as much of a worry for the Congress as for the Left.

The Star Ananda-Nielsen poll was confined to West Bengal, but the other three disagreed on the outcome in Kerala. The CSDS post-poll survey suggested it would be a really close contest with the CPM-led Left Democratic Front marginally more likely to form the government, largely thanks to the popularity of chief minister V S Achuthanandan. The CVoter and ORG polls in contrast gave the Congress-led United Democratic Front a clear edge.

A poll done by Asianet-C-Fore for Kerala has projected the UDF winning between 72 and 82 seats with the LDF winning 58-68 seats.

If the latter predictions come true, it would mean that the Left would be out of power in both of its major states for the first time in over three decades.

In Tamil Nadu, the CSDS and ORG post-poll surveys project a very close fight.

While the CSDS poll predicts that the AIADMK-led opposition alliance has the edge and is likely to get a slim majority, the ORG poll suggests the reverse. The CVoter exit poll is the only one to suggest the state will deliver a decisive mandate favouring the opposition front. Its projection is that the J Jayalalithaa-led coalition will win between 168 and 176 of the 234 seats in the assembly.

In Assam, the CSDS poll is the only one that projects a clear winner, predicting between 64 and 72 seats for the Congress in the 126-member assembly. The ORG survey gives the Congress between 41 and 47 seats and the CVoter exit poll gives the party between 41 and 45 seats.

Even if these projections come true, however, the Congress will be most likely to form the next government given the projected distribution of the remaining seats between the Asom Gana Parishad, the BJP, the Assam United Democratic Front and other smaller groups.

West Bengal Headlines Today-ORG post-poll survey has predicted that the Congress-Trinamool Congress alliance will oust -- with a big margin -- the Left Front which has ruled West Bengal for 34 continuous years. According to the survey, the Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance will get two-thirds majority, winning 210 to 220 seats out of a total 294 seats in the state assembly. The survey predicts just 65 to 70 seats for the Communist Party of India-Marxist-led Left Front. The survey gives 10 to 15 seats to independents and other parties. An exit poll conducted by Star News television channel has projected Congress-TC alliance's victory in West Bengal. The channel predicted that TC-Congress will win 181 and 40 respectively while Left Front will be reduced to 62 from 227.  Research agency C-VOTER also predicts that the Congress-TC alliance will win a mammoth victory in the state. Tamil Nadu Exit polls, conducted by CVB News-C-Voter, indicate that the DMK and its allies will lose a six per cent of its vote share in Tamil Nadu while the AIADMK and its allies stand to gain over four per cent of the vote share.  The AIADMK tally in the 234-member assembly is expected to be between 168 and 176 seats while the DMK and its allies are expected to garner between 54 and 62 seats. While CNN-IBN-CSDS survey projects an edge for the AIADMK-led alliance, Headlines Today predicted a close race in the state between AIADMK and DMK-led combinations.  Kerala  Star News projects the Congress-led United Democratic Alliance's victory in Kerala. The UDF is expected to win 88 while CPM-led Left Democratic Front will win 49.  C-VOTER exit poll also predicts a clear victory for the UDF.  However, CNN-IBN-CSDS survey says the LDF is placed marginally ahead but verdict too close to call, while Headlines Today gave the Congress-led UDF a clear majority. . Assam Assam is likely to give Congress a third time in power, according to CNN-IBN.  Star News says Tarun Gogoi-led Congress has a chance to create history in Assam by returning to power for a third consecutive term.  The Headlines Today poll predicts 44 of the 126 seats for Congress in Assam, with potential ally AUDF slated to win 14. biman bose Kolkata: The CPI(M) on Tuesday rubbished exit poll forecast of Left Front's defeat in the just-concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, saying such predictions have no "scientific basis". "There has been a competition among TV channels to broadcast exit polls which predicted that the results will go against the Left Front, but it will ultimately prove otherwise," CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose told reporters. Trinamool alliance to sweep Bengal: Exit poll Emphasising that exit poll forecasts had "always" been proved wrong since the 2001 assembly polls in West Bengal, Bose said, "All such predictions have failed to alter people's mandate which overwhelmingly elected Left Front to power all these years." Bose asserted that the Left front would form the government for the eighth consecutive term, adding, "The exit polls will only seek to create confusion among people." Commenting on the sixth and final phase of polls which completed the entire polling process in the state, the CPI(M) leader alleged in some booths at Gopiballavpur and Binpur in West Midnapur districts, CPI(M) polling agents were "threatened" by the Trinamool Congress workers and the Maoists. He said a complaint has been lodged with the Election Commission in this regard.

The banners are ready, and so are the sweets and crackers as the opposition AIADMK cadres — confident of winning the Tamil Nadu assembly polls — count the hours before election results are declared Friday.

"Just a day is left for the results, we are in a celebration mood. We are sure that we will win the election. Amma (party chief J. Jayalalithaa) will be the next chief minister. We have already bought sweets, crackers and banners of our party leader," R.B. Udayakumar, AIADMK state student wing secretary, told IANS.

Party workers strongly believe that actor-turned-politician Jayalalithaa will make a comeback and assume the mantle of chief minister again.

"The election result is just an official announcement and confirmation, but we know that our party is the winner. We are 100 percent sure of this," S. Selvaraj, an AIADMK youth wing leader in Ramanathapuram district, said.

At least two exit-polls have forecast a win for the AIADMK-led combine while one said the DMK will retain power.

Workers are performing 'pujas', 'yagna' (fire rituals) and distributing food to the poor to make sure the party returns to power.

"We conducted a lot of special pujas particularly for agni, the god of fire, to destroy amma's political rivals and shelling out thousands of rupees is not an issue. These are just samples. The big day is coming Friday. It is a festival for all the AIADMK workers and Tamil Nadu as Jayalalithaa will again be our chief minister," Udayakumar added.

While the AIADMK cadres are optimistic, the ruling DMK workers are in a wait-and-watch mode.

I. Pugazhendi, secretary of the DMK students' wing, said: "We are not making any special arrangements. After the results, we will gear up for the celebration. We have full hope of winning the election."

About 75 percent voting was recorded April 13. The counting will take place Friday. The state assembly has 234 seats.

Opinion Polls results —  Exit Polls results — Election Survey Results — Poll surveys– West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Assembly Elections -- Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance is set to sweep the assembly elections in West Bengal, according to post-poll projections on television channels, while it was a mixed verdict in other states.

While CNN-IBN-CSDS survey projects an edge for AIADMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, Headlines Today predicted a close race in the state between AIADMK and DMK-led combinations.

Similarly in Kerala, CNN-IBN survey says the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is placed marginally ahead but verdict too close to call, while Headlines Today gave the Congress-led UDF a clear majority.

Assam is likely to give Congress a third time in power, according to CNN-IBN while it could be a hung verdict in prediction made by Headlines Today.

According to research agency C-VOTER exit poll, the TMC alliance would win a mammoth victory in West Bengal, AIADMK would get a good majority in Tamil Nadu, there would be a hung verdict in Assam and clear victory for Congress in Kerala.

In the 294-member assembly in West Bengal, CNN-IBN survey gives Trinamool Congress alliance 222 to 234 seats. It suggests that the Left Front government is heading for its worst-ever performance in three decades with the Front set to get only between 60 and 72 seats.

In the 2006 elections, the Trinamool Congress- Congress alliance had only 40 seats while the Left parties had more than 230 seats.

Headlines Today has predicted 210-220 seats for TMC alliance, while for the Left it gives 65 to 70 seats.

The C-VOTER survey gives TMC alliance 227-235 seats, while for the Left Front it gives between 48 and 56 seats.

In Tamil Nadu, CNN-IBN survey gives AIADMK alliance a seat projection of 120 to 132 seats and for DMK alliance between 102 and 114 seats.

The Headlines Today survey projects the DMK front to get between 115 to 130 seats, while for AIADMK alliance it is between 105 and 120 seats.

The C-VOTER survey gives AIADMK alliance 168 to 176 seats and 54 to 62 seats for DMK alliance.

In the last elections, the DMK alliance had 163 seats in the 234-member assembly while the AIADMK alliance had 69.

In the other Left-ruled state of Kerala, CNN-IBN has given the CPM-led front 69 to 77 seats in the 140-member assembly, while the Congress-led UDF is likely to get 63 and 71 seats.

Headlines Today projects a clear majority for the UDF with 85 to 92 seats and 45 to 52 for LDF.

C-VOTER gives UDF between 83 and 91 seats and LDF between 49 and 57 seats.

In the last elections, the LDF had 91 seats while the UDF 38.

Tarun Gogoi is set to return as Chief Minister in Assam in the CNN-IBN survey with a tally of 64 to 72 seats in the 126-member assembly, an improvement over last elections by over 10 seats.

Headlines Today puts the Congress number in Assam at between 41 and 47, while AGP is projected to get between 31 and 35 seats. BJP is expected to get 16 to 18 seats, while AUDF may get between 13 and 15 seats.

C-VOTER projects Congress tally between 41 and 45, Bodo Peoples Front between seven and 11, AUDF 11-15, AGP 31-35 and BJP 14-18.

In the last elections, Congress had 53, AGP 24, BJP 10, AUDF 10 and ASDC 10.

Interestingly, the BJP is contesting the largest number of seats 138, two short of the total. This is because the party is fighting on its own and is not part of an alliance or a Front.

Incredibly, far from its status as a national party, the lotus has never bloomed in Kerala; BJP is yet to open its account in the state. This election is slated to change that. The BSP, which is also going alone, has the second largest number of candidates in the fray with 122.

Speaking to a national news channel, Jagan had said, "Sonia Gandhi has to answer for causing division in the YSR family".

If Trinamool Congress' Mamata Banerjee is relaxed – she has penetrated the so-far impregnable Red Fort – Kerala's V S Achuthanandan and Tamil Nadu's granddad M Karunanidhi have a fight ahead tomorrow when the six-week wait for results in five states will be over.

Counting of votes to decide the fates of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry begin sharp at 8 am on Friday in 839 halls spread over the five states involving 43,982 personnel.

The entire process, which would decide the fate of several political leaders, would be videographed to prevent any malpractice. According to Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi, the poll outcome is expected by "early lunch".

The counting would take place in 142 counting halls in Assam, 140 in Kerala, 11 in Puducherry, 234 in Tamil Nadu and 312 in West Bengal. While Kerala has an assembly strength of 140, Assam has 126, Tamil Nadu 234, Puducherry 30 and West Bengal 294.

A total of 14.16 crore voters exercised their franchise in the five states which was 20 per cent of the total 72.8 crore electorate in the country with Tamil Nadu and West Bengal registering "all time record turnouts".

Stakes are high in West Bengal where post poll surveys predict that Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress is expected to oust the CPI(M)-led Left Front which is ruling the state for 34 years.

CPI(M) is hopeful that like many previous occasions it would prove its detractors wrong and romp home for the eighth term.

In view of the political clashes witnessed in the state in the run up to the elections, the Central forces will stay in the state till May 23 to tackle the post-poll situation as per the EC directive.

The surveys also gave a close finish in Tamil Nadu where the two Dravidian parties, DMK and AIADMK vied with each other to woo voters.

For AIADMK's Jayalalithaa it will be a battle to return to power after a hiatus of five years. DMK, which suffered setbacks on account of 2G spectrum scam and corruption involving the first family members, is seeking a second successive term.

In Kerala, the surveys gave a mixed picture with one predicting an upper hand for the ruling Left Front.

In Assam, surveys foresee that the ruling Congress would retain power.

The counting of votes for the high-profile by-election to Kadapa Lok Sabha in Andhra Pradesh will also be taken up tomorrow, which will determine the political future of Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, son of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

For Jagan, it was a fight to establish his political credentials after he floated his own political party YSR Congress.

For the Congress, its prestige is at stake in Kadapa as the Lok Sabha seat always remained in its kitty, thanks to YSR.

Jagan's mother Vijayalakshmi also contested the Pulivendula Assembly seat.

In Bengal meanwhile, the Left don't believe there is any writing on the wall – yet.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose exuded confidence his alliance would emerge victorious with a comfortable margin, dismissing predictions of a landslide win for Trinamool Congress-Congress combine by most post-poll surveys.

"When the EVMs will be opened tomorrow, it will be found that the Left Front has won by a very good margin," Bose told a press conference after a Left Front meeting.

Claiming the 'exit polls and opinion polls by media houses are just a waste of money', a very confident Bose said, "The Left Front has decided to hold a press conference tomorrow at 4.30 pm after the counting is over."

Asked what could be the possible tally of the Front, which has seen reverses since the 2008 panchayat polls, he claimed it could be around the 2001 figure when the Front had won 199 constituencies out of 294 seats.

Asked about the source of his confidence despite most surveys predicting a landslide win for Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress-Congress combine, he said, "We work with the people and among the people. They give us confidence. We will form the eighth Left Front government."

Well, good luck to that!

In Kerala, an air of anxiety pervaded the ruling LDF and opposition UDF camps with the political profile of the state for the next five years to be decided when counting of votes is taken up tomorrow.

Never before have voters and candidates in Kerala had to wait for such a long time to know the outcome after exercising their franchise.

Elections for the 140 member Assembly were held on April 13, in what was one of the most bitterly fought elections in the state's history.

Most exit polls have forecast that UDF has a slight edge, but the gap between the two fronts would be narrow this time.

The surveys have also indicated it would be a close call, adding to the anxiety in the two camps.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, however, appeared unperturbed by the surveys.

"Wait till May 13 when counting begins," was all that he said, seeking to steer clear of poll surveys and exit polls.

Achuthanandan, however, seemed to draw comfort from the fact that all surveys had shown that a majority of voters acknowledged the 'good things' done by the LDF government in the last five years.

"About 65 per cent of respondents to all the surveys said the government had performed quite well. This is something that gives satisfaction. The rest we will see on May 13 when the results will be declared," the 87-year-old leader had said.

In the initial stages, the UDF seemed to have had an edge, but the veteran Marxist leader's aggressive campaigning has injected hopes of victory in the LDF camp.

As in the past, the battle of the ballot this time too is between the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the Opposition Congress-headed UDF, which have been alternating in power since 1982.

Will Kerala live up to its penchant for change every alternate five years by giving the mandate to Congress-led UDF or will the CPI(M)-headed LDF under Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan buck the trend by securing a second term ? This is the question dominating the state as the countdown for counting began.

LDF swept the polls in 2006 grabbing 98 seats in the 140 member House, which was almost the reverse of the 2001 tally.

The voter turnout this time was higher at 75.12 per cent from 72.38 per cent in 2001.

In Tamil Nadu, with mixed predictions by exit polls and pre-poll surveys, the ruling DMK and arch rival AIADMK are keeping their fingers crossed on what is in store for them tomorrow when counting of votes for the April 13 assembly elections will be taken up.

The huge turnout in the elections has puzzled leaders of DMK and AIADMK fronts, with each interpreting it as a trend in their favour.

The DMK leadership, emboldened by an exit poll by a channel and a Tamil weekly, is certain that they will head the state's first-ever coalition government, while the AIADMK maintains the party will gain an absolute majority to form a ministry on its own in the state.

Both DMK president M Karunanidhi and AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa are understood to have finalised their teams in case they are voted to power.

DMK sources said their leader would have a small team sworn in, which would be expanded later. AIADMK sources claimed Jayalalithaa would form the ministry in one go as she was hopeful of securing an absolute majority for her party.

The exit polls have left both camps bemused as their calculations have been upset.

The confidence expressed by Congress leader K V Thangkabalu and PMK founder S Ramadoss on two separate occasions after the polls helped create a feel-good factor among DMK cadres, until surveys by TV channels doused it.

While AIADMK has only the election results to worry about, the ruling alliance is pondering over other major issues that loom large in the backdrop of 2G investigations by the CBI.

The DMK has witnessed one of its Union ministers A Raja imprisoned, MP Kanimozhi and an associate TV company being questioned by the CBI and also its key ally Congress bargain hard for more seats -- all in the last couple of months, leaving it shaky.

On the other hand, after having successfully struck an alliance with preferred parties and the lion's share in the number of seats, the AIADMK leadership is now keen on not letting anything go wrong in the counting.

In Puducherry, elaborate security arrgangements have been put in place ahead of the

counting tomorrrow.

This is a crucial election for the ruling Congress as it is facing the challenge from the AINRC floated by former Chief Minister Rangasamy.

A total of 187 candidates, including 79 Independents, await with bated breath the outcome of the polls.

Prominent candidates are Chief Minister V Vaithilingam and all his five ministerial colleagues, Speaker R Radhakrishnan (all Congress), former Chief Ministers N.Rangasamy (All India NR Congress) and R V Janakiraman (DMK).

The Union Territory has 30 seats.

Rangasamy was unseated from the office of Chief Minister in August 2008 when all his erstwhile ministerial colleagues raised a banner of revolt against him.

Vaithilingam, who was PWD Minister in the Rangasamy-led Congress government, succeeded him.

The Congress-DMK alliance had assured voters that if given a renewed mandate, the alliance would ensure growth and development of Puducherry, while the AINRC-AIADMK front promised the electorate that if elected to power it would provide a 'clean, transparent and fair governance'.

Election results are rigged to favour the ruling castes to deny the desired change. Unless the voters are awakened this trend will continue. The awakening will come through BSP. So long as genuine voters names belonging to SC/ST/OBC and minorities missing/removed from voters list, the ruling castes will have its day. The Rigged Views papers and Media are always in favour of the ruling traditional castes indulging in cheap theatrics. All  exit polls are done by AC Nielsen for Star Ananda and by CVoter for a host of media organizations, as well as two post-poll surveys done by CSDS for CNN-IBN and Week and by ORG for Headlines Today only.
