The Delhi high court on Wednesday directed the Centre to inform it within 6 weeks whether the government has framed any policy banning junk food and carbonated drinks in schools. Acting on a PIL seeking a ban on junk food which allegedly cause damage to health and mental growth of children, a division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjeev Khanna asked the Centre's standing counsel senior advocate Atul Nanda to inform the bench through an affidavit. The court asked the senior lawyer to consider framing of a policy in the light of international studies on junk food. The PIL was filed by Uday Foundation, an NGO, seeking ban on the sale of junk food in schools and in a radius of 500 yards of educational institutions. "It is the right time we change the way kids eat in schools. Banning junk food and carbonated drinks in schools will set new standards for healthy food that will make our kids feel better, grow better and learn better and it will improve the nutrition quality of school meals and remove junk food from schools," the NGO said. Seeking an order directing the government to develop a comprehensive school canteen policy emphasising healthy nutrition among school-going children, the petitioner said various studies by experts have pointed out the damages caused by junk food to health and mind of school-going children. The court issued notices to the Centre, the city government and the National Commission For Protection Of Child Rights and asked them to file their responses. The bench fixed April 20 as the date for further hearing of the matter. http://www.facebook.com/l/9ca19kF5_ZD6FaDWpASLEvESzsQ;www.dnaindia.com/india/report_are-you-planning-to-ban-junk-food-in-schools-delhi-high-court-asks-centre_1505530
