George Bush thought 9/11 plane had been shot down on his orders [Well, Cheney's.] Memoirs reveal former US president gave order to shoot down any hijacked planes before United Airlines flight 93 crashed. 29 Oct 2010 George Bush initially believed the only plane not to reach its intended target during the 11 September attacks had been shot down on his orders, according to leaks from the former president's [sic] memoir of his two terms in office. Bush reveals that he gave the order for any further suspected hijacked planes to be shot down after the first aircraft were flown into the World Trade Centre in New York during the 2001 terror attacks. He at first thought the crash of United Airlines flight 93 in Pennsylvania had resulted from this instruction, although it later emerged was spun that passengers had stormed the cockpit as hijackers flew the plane towards the Capitol building in Washington. [Oh my God. Bush is giving a 'quasi-confession.' Bush's narrative reads like 'the diary of an unsub.' Hotchner's BAU would have this guy made as the killer in about five picoseconds. --LRP]

Intercepted device likely a cell phone, photo analysis shows 30 Oct 2010 The electronic component visible in a law enforcement image of an intercepted suspicious shipment from Yemen appears to be a printed circuit board from a disassembled cell phone, an engineer told CNN Friday. "This size and the shape of the PCB (printed circuit board) are typical to a handset cell phone type device," wrote Olivier Clerc, hardware application engineering manager for a large U.S.-based cell phone parts manufacturer.

Explosives Found On US-Bound Planes 29 Oct 2010 Two suspicious packages found on US-bound planes did contain explosives, President Obama has confirmed. The latest development comes amid a huge terror alert on both sides of the Atlantic, which included US fighter jets escorting a passenger plane into New York. Mr Obama named al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (Aqap) as possibly being behind the terror plot.

International terror alert as suspect package found on cargo plane in UK --Suspicious package on UPS plane at East Midlands airport --Another package found on FedEx plane in Dubai --US officials tracked other packages on suspected 'dry runs' 29 Oct 2010 A British airport is at the centre of an international terrorism alert after the discovery of suspicious packages on cargo flights destined for the US. An area of East Midlands airport - Britain's largest air freight terminal - was sealed off after investigators found a package containing a toner cartridge on a United Parcel Service plane from Yemen to Chicago. Other planes in the United States were placed under investigation, and Federal Express said a second suspicious package had been found in Dubai on a plane originating in Yemen.

Yemen flight lands at JFK under military escort 29 Oct 2010 A commercial passenger jet that was also carrying cargo from Yemen was escorted from the Canadian border to New York City by two military fighter jets, U.S. officials said. According to NORAD, the fighter escort to John F. Kennedy International Airport was being done "out of an abundance of caution." Sources told CBS News that there were no threats or suspicious packages aboard.

FedEx says suspicious package confiscated in Dubai 29 Oct 2010 FedEx Corp. said local authorities, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, confiscated a suspicious package at its Dubai facility that originated in Yemen. "As an additional safety measure, FedEx has embargoed all shipments, originating from Yemen," said Maury Lane, spokesman for FedEx, the world's largest cargo airline.

Obama: Suspicious packages are a 'credible terrorist threat' 29 Oct 2010 President Obama said Friday that packages mailed from Yemen and intercepted in the last 24 hours contained explosive material and represented a "credible terrorist threat." The packages, mailed via UPS and FedEx, were addressed to two places of Jewish worship in Chicago, the president said. The two packages were intercepted at different locations, one on a UPS plane at the East Midlands airport near Nottingham, England, and the other at a FedEx facility in Dubai.

Plane terror alert: Obama vows to 'root out extremism' [Start with your killer drone strikes aka war crimes.] 29 Oct 2010 US President Barack Obama has said that two packages originating in Yemen and destined for the United States do "appear to contain explosive material". Speaking to the American people, the US president vowed that his country would do all it could to "root out extremism in all its form". The suspect packages were intercepted in Dubai and Britain.

Al-Qaeda 'plotted to take hostages in Mumbai-style attacks on Britain' 28 Oct 2010 Al-Qaeda planned to take hostages in Mumbai-style attacks on Britain, France and Germany to demand the release of the mastermind of the September 11 atrocities, according to a former associate of Osama bin Laden. Noman Benotman said that bin Laden wanted to force the Americans to release Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is awaiting trial for his part in the 2001 [Bush-Cheney] attacks on the World Trade Centre.

TSA to phase in new pat-down procedures at airports nationwide --'Passengers who opt out of advanced imaging technology screening will receive alternate screening to include a thorough pat-down.' [Yeah, and they can't *wait* for the thirteen-year-olds to fly! Predators with a 'purpose' get a pass.] 29 Oct 2010 Airline passengers can expect to see as well as feel new pat-down procedures at U.S. airports over the coming weeks in an effort to provide another layer of security for travelers, the Transportation Security Administration said Thursday. "Pat-downs are one important tool to help TSA detect hidden and dangerous items such as explosives," according to a TSA statement sent to CNN. The TSA said passengers should continue to expect "an unpredictable mix of security layers that include explosives trace detection, advanced imaging technology, canine teams, among others."

Anti-terror stop-and-search: 101,248. Terror-related arrests: 0 29 Oct 2010 Not one person involved in more than 100,000 stops and searches by police under controversial anti-terrorism powers last year was arrested for a terrorism-related offence, figures showed yesterday. The revelation will give fuel to critics who have called for the abolition of the measures. A total of 101,248 stops and searches were made under section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 in 2009-10, but only one in every 200 led to an arrest and none of these was terror-related, the Home Office figures showed.

Police consider drastic measures after failed terror plot --'Inspection points' would be set up at Metro facilities and passengers would go through inspections before entering a rail station or boarding a bus. 28 Oct 2010  The day after federal investigators unveiled an unsuccessful terrorist plot [false flag] against the D.C. Metro system, transit police are considering implementing one of the most controversial security measures available to them. Metro police now believe they may have to resort to random bag searches, after learning of the FBI's Wednesday arrest of Farooque Ahmed, of Ashburn, Va., for helping to plan an attack on the D.C. subways.

Police discredited over secret plan to spy on Muslims 29 Oct 2010 (UK) A secret police counter-terrorism operation to place Muslim communities under permanent surveillance in two areas of Birmingham was implemented with virtually no consultation, oversight or regard for the law, a damning internal report has found. The installation of more than 200 CCTV cameras, known as Project Champion, was temporarily suspended in June after local councillors revealed police had misled residents into believing they were to be used to combat vehicle crime and antisocial behaviour.

Fourth shooting in Virginia targeting military facilities prompts FBI public appeal --An FBI official urges the shooter, possibly a disgruntled Marine, to contact authorities.  29 Oct 2010 After a fourth shooting incident Thursday night involving military buildings in Northern Virginia, the FBI appealed to the public for help in locating a possibly disgruntled Marine before something "disastrous" happens. Authorities announced on Friday that they believe the shooter who fired on the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., Thursday night may also be responsible for three other shootings targeting government buildings in recent weeks.

Milan prosecutor seeks stiffer sentence for ex-CIA chief convicted in Italian kidnapping 28 Oct 2010 An Italian prosecutor has asked for a stiffer sentence for a CIA station chief convicted in the 2003 kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric in Milan. Twenty-three Americans, including Robert Seldon Lady, then a CIA station chief in Milan, and two Italians were convicted in November for the kidnapping. It was the first conviction anywhere in the world involving the CIA's extraordinary renditions program. All Americans were tried in absentia.

US missile strikes in 24 hours kill 14 in Pakistan 27 Oct 2010 US unmanned planes fired two missiles at a house in a Pakistani tribal region close to the Afghan border on Thursday, killing seven alleged militants [aka civilians], the latest in a barrage of such attacks, intelligence officials said. The strike in North Waziristan was the third attack there in the past 24 hours.

NATO tanker set ablaze in SW Pakistan 29 Oct 2010 Militants in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan have blown up a fuel tanker bound for the US-led NATO forces stationed in neighboring Afghanistan. The attack came on Friday, when unidentified gunmen destroyed at least two NATO supply tankers in Balochistan. Elsewhere, near the provincial capital of Quetta, militants sprayed a NATO truck with bullets. At least one person was killed by the gun fire which also left another injured.

US-led airstrike kills 20 in Afghanistan 29 Oct 2010 A fresh US-led airstrike has killed at least 20 people and wounded several others in the troubled southern regions of Afghanistan, NATO says. The US-led military alliance says the airstrike took place in a district of Kandahar Province, near the border with Pakistan. NATO issued a statement, saying that the Friday airstrike targeted a group of Taliban militants in Spin Boldak district, considered a Taliban-linked militant stronghold.

Iraq war logs: 'The US was part of the Wolf Brigade operation against us' --Omar Salem Shehab tells of torture at hands of notorious Iraqi police unit and says US forces were involved in his capture 28 Oct 2010 During the foreboding months of 2005, one police unit struck more fear into Iraqis than the entire occupying US army. They were known as the Wolf Brigade. Their soldiers and officers seemingly answered to no one. They were seen as indiscriminate and predatory... But the full range of their abuses and close co-operation with the US army remained in the shadows until the WikiLeaks disclosures showcased them in stark detail.

One million cubic tons of garbage dumped in Tigris River 28 Oct 2010 The Tigris River, which bisects Baghdad and several other major Iraqi cities, has about one billion cubic meters of polluted materials dumped into it, according to a senior environment expert. Kamel al-Saadi, Baghdad Province's expert on environment, said pollution was surging in the river "at an alarming scale" and called for immediate measure to put a halt. "The rate of pollution (in the Tigris River) has reached one billion cubic meters and is on the increase," Saadi said.

Iraq suicide bombing kills at least 25, wounds 70: police 29 Oct 2010 Twenty-five people were killed and 70 wounded in a suicide bombing Friday at a coffee house in the town of Balad Ruz in central Iraq's Diyala province, a police official said. "Twenty-five people were killed and 70 were wounded... when a suicide bomber detonated a belt filled with explosives at a coffee house in the centre of the city at 9:00 pm (1800 GMT)," said Balad Ruz police chief Major Ahmed al-Tamimi.

MI6 chief calls for spying on Iran 28 Oct 2010 The head of Britain's spy service has accused Iran of pursuing clandestine nuclear activities, saying that spying is crucial to stop Tehran's nuclear program. "Stopping nuclear proliferation cannot be addressed purely by conventional diplomacy. We need intelligence-led operations to make it more difficult for countries like Iran to develop nuclear weapons," Head of MI6 John Sawers said in the first public speech by a serving UK secret intelligence service chief.

US to build £8bn super base on Pacific island of Guam --It will be the largest investment in a military base in the western Pacific since the Second World War, and the biggest spend on naval infrastructure in decades. 25 Oct 2010 The US is building an £8 billion super military base on the Pacific island of Guam... The expansion will include a dock for a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, a missile defence system, live-fire training sites and the expansion of the island's airbase. Guam residents fear the build-up could hurt their ecosystem and tourism-dependent economy. The US's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that this could trigger serious water shortages. The EPA said that dredging the harbour to allow an aircraft carrier to berth would damage 71 acres of pristine coral reefs. [Another day, another budget-busting act of eco-terrorism by USociopaths to enhance the coffers of Pentagon contractors. BTW, where's the Teabagging whine over the *deficit?*]

Airmen Given Expired Anthrax Vaccines 28 Oct 2010 All Air Force medical facilities stopped vaccinating against anthrax on Oct. 26 after officials determined that many treatment centers administered expired [squalene-laden] vaccines earlier in the same month. In a memo issued Oct. 26, Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark Ediger, commander of the Air Force Medical Operations Agency in San Antonio, said the stand-down would remain in place until treatment centers can confirm the vaccine stock they have is current.

Midterm elections to usher in further shift by Obama to the right By Barry Grey 27 Oct 2010 There are indications that Obama would welcome a Republican takeover of the House of Representatives and a reduced Democratic majority in the Senate. He has conspicuously campaigned in the run-up to the vote exclusively for Democrats locked in tight Senate and gubernatorial races, not for threatened Democrats in the House. A divided Congress with greater Republican strength would provide a pretext for dropping even small-scale stimulus measures, and give the administration political cover for ending extended benefits for the long-term unemployed.

Quick action! Tell Tom Corbett: Don't try to suppress the vote in PA (Keystone Progress) 29 Oct 2010 As Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Tom Corbett (R-Sociopath) is supposed to protect our right to vote. Instead, he said he wants to make sure that voters don't turn out to vote on Tuesday. Speaking of Philadelphia voters he said, "we want to make sure that they don't get 50%." He urged his supporters, "Keep that down." I know it's hard to believe that a sitting attorney general would tell people to make sure that citizens don't vote, but that's exactly what he said. Join us in demanding that Tom Corbett apologize to the people of Pennsylvania, especially Philadelphia. The Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania should be encouraging citizens to vote, and protecting our rights--not trying to suppress the vote.

Halliburton Ordered to Turn Over Cement in Probe 29 Oct 2010 Halliburton Co. was ordered to turn over cement used on the Deepwater Horizon project in connection with a probe into the cause of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The order was given by a federal judge in New Orleans on Oct. 27. The release of the court order today follows yesterday's National Oil Commission report that Halliburton cement used on the BP Plc well in April was unstable but used anyway.

Halliburton, BP Knew of Cement Flaws Before Spill, Panel Says 29 Oct 2010 Halliburton knew weeks before the fatal explosion of the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico that the cement mixture they planned to use to seal the bottom of the well was unstable but still went ahead with the job, the presidential commission investigating the accident said on Thursday. In the first official finding of responsibility for the blowout... the commission staff determined that Halliburton had conducted three laboratory tests that indicated that the cement mixture did not meet industry standards. The result of at least one of those tests was given on March 8 to BP, which failed to act upon it, the panel's lead investigator, Fred H. Bartlit Jr., said in a letter delivered to the commissioners on Thursday.

Halliburton used flawed cement on BP well: panel 28 Oct 2010 Halliburton Co. used flawed cement in BP Plc's doomed Gulf of Mexico well, which could have contributed to the blowout that sparked the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history, a White House panel said on Thursday. Halliburton's shares tumbled as much as 16 percent after the National Oil Spill Commission released a letter detailing the panel's findings, before recovering to close down nearly 8 percent at $31.68 per share on the New York Stock Exchange.

Strong Extratropical Cyclone Over the US Midwest 29 Oct 2010 The storm that swept across the center of the United States on October 26 and October 27, 2010, was memorable to those who experienced it because of its strong winds, rain, hail, and widespread tornadoes. Meteorologists get excited about the storm because it set a record for the lowest pressure (not associated with a hurricane) measured over land in the continental United States. At 5:13 p.m. CDT, the weather station in Bigfork, Minnesota recorded 955.2 millibars (28.21 inches of pressure). This measurement corresponds to the pressure seen in a Category 3 hurricane.

WikiLeaks proposed as first public target for U.S. government cyberattack 27 Oct 2010 In a twist that would have been inconceivable even a few months ago, the WikiLeaks.org Web site is being proposed as the first public target for a U.S. government cyberattack. After [WikiLeaks] distributed nearly 400,000 classified documents from the Iraq war on Friday, Washington officialdom responded with a torrent of denunciations alleging violations of national security and endangering U.S. military operations... In August, Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell left open the possibility of offensive action against WikiLeaks.

Al Qaeda is here: How a U.S. branch of the terror organisation is 'now our biggest threat' 27 Oct 2010 Homegrown al Qaeda terrorists may now pose the biggest threat to America, defence sources claimed today. Intelligence experts believe Americans have now risen to the very top of Osama bin Laden's terrorist network. [Yup, and they're based in Langley.] With their innate knowledge of the country's psyche and the ease with which they can travel the country without being detected, the U.S. passport-carrying terrorists have become a nightmare for counter-intelligence agents.

Oops! Nuclear Missiles Go Offline after Computer Error 26 Oct 2010 A series of computer errors at an Air Force base in Wyoming Saturday took 50 nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles -- one-ninth of the U.S. missile stockpile -- offline for about an hour, CBS News reports. Engineers believe that the outage at F.E. Warren Air Force Base was caused by a hardware failure in a launch control computer rather than a power failure as had been previously reported, according to a defense official with knowledge of the situation.
