DAY-104: Humhama youth succumbs; toll 109

Curfew relaxed in phases, to continue today

GOWHAR BHAT

Srinagar, Sept 22: A youth injured in the police and CRPF firing last week succumbed here on Wednesday taking the death toll in the present Kashmir unrest since June 11 to 109 while the Valley witnessed another day of curfew today despite Hurriyat Conference (G) calling off protests for the day. Curfew is likely to continue for 2- more days despite Hurriyat Conference (G) spearheading the ongoing "Quit Kashmir Movement" suspending the strike on Thursday and Friday.
 Youth succumbs
Doctors at SKIMS, Soura said that Sajad Ahmad Pandit son of Abdul Aziz Pandit of Sheikhpora, Humhama succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.
"He breathed his last at around 1 am," the Medical Superintendent, SKIMS, Dr. Syed Amin Tabish told Greater Kashmir.
He said 23-year-old Sajad had sustained firearm injuries in his groin. He was injured in the firing on September 13 at Humhama and was shifted to SMHS. He was later referred to SKIMS after his limb was amputated there.
Curfew may continue
Despite Hurriyat Conference (G) calling off the strike for 2-days i.e. on Thursday and Friday, authorities are likely to keep curfew in place for half day on Thursday and may give relaxation in the afternoon, sources said. "Final decision will be taken in the morning," they added.
Curfew relaxed in phases
Meanwhile, authorities locked down the entire Valley by clamping a strict curfew today despite Hurriyat suspending the strike for the day. Today was the second instance when government imposed curfew on a day when Hurriyat had provided a break from protests and strike.
The curfew restrictions were strict. Many Hajj aspirants, who had to attend the Hajj training at Hajj House, Bemina, complained that they couldn't reach there.
"CRPF men didn't allow anyone to move ahead of Bemina, Byepass. I showed them my curfew pass but they didn't honour it," said Rouf Ahmad, who had to drop his father at Hajj house.
However, area-wise relaxations were provided in curfew later in the day. A police spokesman said that curfew restrictions were lifted in east, west and south zones of Srinagar City from 3 pm onwards, while in north city and Hazratbal, relaxations were given from 5 pm onwards. In Ganderbal and Kangan, curfew was relaxed from 12 to 2 pm, which was later extended up to 4 pm; at Awantipora and Pulwama town from 1 to 4 pm; at Shopian from 3 to 6 pm; at Kulgam from 4 pm onwards; at Islamabad from 5 to 8 pm; Bijbehara from 5 to 7 pm; Bandipora from 5 to 6 pm and at Sumbal from 5.30 pm to 6 pm.
Police said no protests or any untoward incidents were reported anywhere from the Valley.
The relaxation provided people a much-needed breather. People came out to buy essentials. The medical shops, grocery stores saw huge rush of people.
Altaf Baba adds from Varmul
Meanwhile, the uninterrupted curfew in the Varmul town and its peripheries in north Kashmir since past 3-days has made life miserable for residents.
People complain that they are facing shortage of the essentials particularly medicines and vegetables. There have been no incidents of protests or stone pelting in the town but the curfew hasn't been relaxed. "I have to take eight units of insulin daily in order to control my diabetes but the non-availability of the medicine due to the curfew has raised my sugar level," said Muhammad Ashraf of Khawja Bagh, Varmul.
Reports from different areas of the curfew bound Varmul said that people are facing shortage of vegetables and even the baby food.
"Whatever essentials were available in the mohalla shops have got now exhausted. There is no further supply of the essential commodities due to round the clock curfew," said a businessman Masrat Ahmad of Kanli Bagh, Varmul.
The strict round-the-clock curfew has also affected the health services in the town with most of the medicos and the paramedical staff of the District Hospital, Varmul alleging that their I-cards and curfew-passes were not being honored by the troops deployed at different places of the town.
