Srikant Jena Invites German Investment in Chemical and Petrochemical Sector
New Delhi: July 7, 2010
Shri Srikant Kumar Jena, Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilizers, has invited German investment in the fast growing chemical and petrochemical sector in India. The Minister who was on a three day visit to Germany extended the invitation during a meeting with Mr. Jochen Homann, State Secretary, Federal Ministry of Economics & Technology. Shri Jena spoke about the upcoming opportunities in Chemical and Petrochemical sector in India and the commitment of Government to provide world class infrastructure for its growth in the PCPIR regions. He mentioned about the already functional PCPIR at Dahej and the new upcoming PCPIRs at Haldia, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Paradeep in Orissa. The Minister talked about the attractiveness of East Coast region of India particularly Orissa as an investment destination for German companies. The proposal for a PCPIR in Paradeep of Orissa is under the process of approval by Govt. of India. He also mentioned that within the proposed PCPIR, there could be SEZs, Plastic Parks, Growth Centres, etc., which would provide investment opportunities in the entire value chain of petrochemicals.
Shri Sudhir Vyas, India's Ambassador to Germany assured the German side to provide all the information that the German companies may seek on investment opportunities in India particularly in Chemicals and Petrochemicals sector. Ms Neel Kamal Darbari Joint Secretary, Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, spoke on the concept of PCPIR and the Government of India's policies of attracting investment into PCIPRs. Shri Arvind Agarwal, Managing Director of Gujarat Industries Development Corporation (GIDC) spoke on the PCPIR being developed at Dahej (Gujarat). He invited German companies to invest in Dahej which has already witnessed a commitment of US $ 15 billion investment in its PCPIR region.
The delegation also visited the BASF Company's chemical plant at Schwarheide Chemical Complex in Brandenburg State of Germany. The plant is one of the most modern chemical plants of BASF, the chemical industry giant in Germany. The Chairman of the Management Board of the BASF, Dr. Karl Heinz Tebel and his senior officials spoke about the BASF Company and its areas of operations all over the world. During the meeting, the Joint Secretary Ms. Neel Kamal Darbari spoke about PCPIR policies of Government of India and invited investment from BASF into the PCIPR being set up/under consideration in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa.
Addressing a meeting organised by Federation of German Chemical Industry (VCI) to promote PCPIR policy Shri Jena spoke about the upcoming opportunities in Chemical and Petrochemical sector in India and the commitment of Government to provide world class infrastructure for its growth in the PCPIR regions. Dr. Utz Tillmann, Director General of VCI, senior officials of VCI and CEOs of German Chemical Companies attended the dinner meeting.
In Frankfurt, the Minister and his delegation met the Executive Director Dr. Kurt Wagemann and senior officials of Society for Chemicals, Engineering and Biotechnology (DACHEMA). The Minister spoke about PCPIR polices of Government of India and invited German companies to invest in PCPIR being developed/ considered in various states of India. Dr. Forster of DACHEMA gave a presentation on the European funding programme (KLIENT-International Partnerships for Sustainable Technologies and Services for Climate Protection & Environment). A short tour to the Karl-Winnacker Institute for Chemical Technology was also conducted by Dr. Wolfram Furbetch and Dr. Jens Schrader.
The delegation included Joint Secretary, Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals Ms. Neel Kamal Darbari, MD-GIDC Shri Arvind Agarwal, DG, CIPET Dr. S.K. Nayak, Advisor FICCI Shri Rajan Kohli and representatives of chemical industry.
Shri Rajan Kohli, Advisor FICCI spoke about the India Chem 2010, to be held in Mumbai in October 2010. He invited German companies to participate in a big way at the event and avail of the networking facilities the India Chem platform provided.
