Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace): We are now officially in the throes of "Independence Day" weekend in the United States of America for the year 2010. Tomorrow, July 4th, the badge of "patriotism" will be placed on the collective sleeve of this nation's citizenry with the type of zeal that may be unmatched in any other part of the world. (ALLAH Knows best.) Like a significant number of other Muslims in different parts of America, I am heading to Chicago, Illinois, for the annual Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Convention – a convention which has as its theme this year "Nurturing Compassionate Communities" (and the sub-title, "Connecting Faith and Service"). Originally, I had expected to deliver the jumu'ah address at a masjid located along the route that I would end up taking to Chicago. The imam of the masjid, who also planned to attend the ISNA Convention on Friday, invited me to serve as guest khatib (two or three weeks ago). I accepted his invitation pending the final confirmation of a requisite board member who shares responsibility on such matters. I thought the confirmation would be a routine matter, because I had spoken at this masjid for jumu'ah on at least two occasions in the not too distant past (with very satisfactory results); but routine it wasn't. I received a telephone message from the imam three days ago, containing a sincere apology for the short notice alert that the board member had chosen someone else to deliver the khutbah yesterday. The short notice prevented me from making myself available to another community, and so I decided to expound (in writing) on some of the thoughts that I would have shared had I spoken yesterday at any masjid. I think it's very important for Muslims in America to examine the meaning of patriotism from an Islamic perspective. I will try to move that conversation along with this paper, and simultaneously expound on the very specific reason why I've decided to travel to Chicago for the ISNA Convention, insha'Allah...
