Khanaqah March Foiled With Curbs, 40 Hurt In Clashes

Srinagar, July 23, KONS:  Protests against the killing of civilians in government forces' action were held at many places across the valley on Friday even though authorities clamped down with curfew and strict curbs in Kashmir's summer capital and outlying districts to thwart the Hurriyat (G) call which has kept the valley shut down for over three weeks.
Clashes erupted between protestors and the forces at several places, leaving nearly forty persons injured, six of them police and paramilitary men, including a DSP and an SHO, the latter, according to the police, having been shot twice in gunfire from a crowd.
The chairman of the Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, and his colleague, Agha Syed Hassan, were kept under house arrest along with a number of other separatist leaders, and Friday prayers were disallowed at Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid and other main mosques and imambargahs in the valley.
Authorities enforced undeclared curfew across Srinagar to prevent a Hurriyat (G) march to the khanaqah-e-mu'alla, the interior city shrine of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamadani (RA), the 13th century Iranian saint and reformer, who is credited with Islam's massive spread in Kashmir.
All routes to the shrine were sealed off with barricades and armoured personnel carriers, and thousands of police and paramilitary men deployed in and around the congested locality to discourage public movement.
The city had been completely sewn up with a heavy presence of the armed forces who confined people indoors, not allowing movement even for Friday prayers in the main mosques, including the central Jamia Masjid where congregational weekly prayers were not held for the fourth time in a row.
The Hyderpora quarters of upper Srinagar witnessed a couple of large demonstrations issuing out of Galwanpora and the Jamia Masjid, both of which were targeted with heavy cane charges and severe tear gas shelling when the marchers tried to press ahead  despite forces' resistance.
Prolonged brick-batting erupted near the by-pass as the marchers from the mosque retaliated to the forces' action with stones, with the clashes leaving seven persons injured.
The police were reported to have arrested half-a-dozen youth during the violence and locked them up in the Saddar police station.
Severe violence also erupted on the high security VIP zone of the Boulevard near Nishat on the banks of the Dal Lake where seven policemen and three civilians were injured as street battles erupted after the forces used cane-charges and tear gas on demonstrators.
A large procession in the Lasjan area south of Srinagar passed off peacefully, and a march led by the JKLF in Padshahi Bagh against the arrest of pro-freedom leaders and activists was dispersed after a chase near the main road.
Anti-government protests were also held in the Kralpora, Moochoo and Natipora areas on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Friday prayers were disallowed in the imambargah at Budgam town also, but separatists led a procession out of Gandoora, with some youth pelting stones at the forces near Beeru.
More casualties were reported from Takkar where a JKLF-led march from Hari and Batragam was broken up with violence.
Processions were also taken out from the Jamai Masjid in Kupwara, Wilgam, Dahama, Bahni Pora, Kashi,  Kuna Poshpora, Kralgund, Rafiabad, Watragam and other areas.
Locals alleged that the forces personnel had burst into homes while chasing protestors, and smashed windowpanes and harassed people, besides damaging the old Jamia Masjid.
A police constable and three CRPF men were injured during street battles in the Papchan area where a procession taken out from the Jamia Masjid despite curfew was targeted with cane-charges and tear gas leading to clashes.
