I am happy as I got today the copy of the First Poetry Book of my DSB days friend KAPILESH Bhoj. I would write on the book only after reading it.
Since 11th June, Football has captured my Daily life more than Usual. For Football, it is always an Experience to go back to roots. For Example, the Roaring VOVUZELA makes me land on the Cruel World of Poverty and chaos, Wars and Civil wars. While DROGBA entered in the Game against Portugal, I could see the African Latin American and Asian and even East European Countries torn in Civil War. To see Diago restless on the sidelines reminds me the source of Energy within the Geopolitics of Have Nots worldwide. I am happy that African and Asian teams performed very well this week and hope them to continue the show. The great fight of North Korea against the Giant Brazil, my most Favourite team represents the ASIA which is out of Emerging Market, Live Telecast and IT Revolution! Reading Indian Experts in Pet Toilet Media and seeing them live on TV may not provide us that FEEL unless we Identify ourselves with the Black Untouchables. The dossiers include information on recently acquired properties of these entities, their bank transactions and details of investments made by them in shares and mutual funds. Joint director and additional commissioner rank officers who have been armed with these dossiers have been asked to supervise the cases and, if necessary, initiate attachment proceedings, sources said.
Till March 31, the total arrears were Rs 2.30 lakh crore and with the start of the new fiscal, another Rs 20,000 crore has been added to this figure. Last year, the department had managed to recover nearly Rs 12,000 crore. The target for this year has been fixed at Rs 14,000 crore.
I-T officers have been armed with an important tool, the Individual Transaction Statement (ITS) of the assesses which enables field authorities to view their current assets and an access to information like assessee's recent investment in mutual funds, shares and other expenditure made available through annual information report from banks. Considered an effective strategy for collection of arrears, the ITS empowers officers with relevant information regarding movable and immovable assets of the assesses. The modes used by assessing officers are to identify the current assets and take necessary action for attachment and recovery for the same.
In 2009, I-T's directorate of recovery had analysed the dossiers having outstanding demands of above Rs 25 crore. Out of total of 551 such dossiers, only 258 cases were found to be having wholly actionable demands, that is demand not covered by any write-off proposal, BIFR proceedings, settlement commission proceedings, etc.
Further analysis of these 258 cases showed that 227 of them were concentrated in nine major cities. Each of these cases was listed and the demands pertaining to each of them was detailed. The zone-wise lists of such cases were handed over to respective zonal members for their information and supervision of recovery.
A list was also handed over to each chief commissioner of I-T at the time of annual general conference held in the capital last year in August. A senior officer said in-depth monitoring was done in each of these cases. The supervisory authorities were asked to call for records and latest balance sheets with a view to detect current assets from which recoveries could be made from a defaulter.

The vuvuzela (English pronunciation: /vuːvuːˈzeɪlə/) , sometimes called a "lepatata" (its Tswana name) or a stadium horn, is a blowing horn up to approximately 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in length. It is commonly blown by fans at football matches in South Africa.[1] The instrument is played using a simple brass instrument technique of blowing through compressed lips to create a buzz, and emits (from the standard shorter horn of about 60–65 cm) a loud monotone (B♭3). A similar instrument (known as corneta in Brazil and other Latin American countries) is used by football fans in South America.[2]
Vuvuzelas have been controversial.[3] They have been associated with permanent noise-induced hearing loss,[4] cited as a possible safety risk when spectators cannot hear evacuation announcements,[5] and potentially spread colds and flu viruses on a greater scale than coughing or shouting.[6][7] Vuvuzelas have also been blamed for drowning the sound and atmosphere of football games.[8][9] Commentators have described the sound as "annoying" and "satanic"[10] and compared it with "a stampede of noisy elephants",[11] "a deafening swarm of locusts",[12] "a goat on the way to slaughter",[13] and "a giant hive full of very angry bees".[14]
The sound level of the instrument has been measured at 127 decibels[15][4] contributing to football matches with dangerously high sound pressure levels for unprotected ears.[16] A new model, however, announced on 14 June 2010, has a modified mouthpiece which is claimed to reduce the volume by 20 dB.[15]

Origin
This type of plastic horn or trumpet has been used in Mexican stadiums since the 1970s.[citation needed] Originally made out of tin, the vuvuzela became popular in South Africa in the 1990s. Well-known Kaizer Chiefs F.C. fan Freddie "Saddam" Maake claims to have invented the vuvuzela by adapting an aluminium version as early as 1965 from a bicycle horn after removing the black rubber to blow with his mouth. He later found it to be too short and joined a pipe to make it longer. Maake has photos of him in the 1970s and 1980s at local South African games and international games in 1992 and 1996 and at the 1998 World Cup in France, holding the aluminium vuvuzela. He says the instrument was banned as authorities ruled it a dangerous weapon, which prompted him to find a plastic company that could manufacture it.[17]
In 2001, South Africa-based company Masincedane Sport began to mass-produce a plastic version.[18][19] Neil van Schalkwyk, the co-owner of Masincedane Sport, won the SAB KickStart Award in 2001.[20]
Vuvuzelas have been said to be based on kudu horn instruments and thus rooted in African history, but this is disputed.[21][18] During the entire match, supporters blow vuvuzelas frantically in an attempt to "kill off" their opponents.[22][23]
Origin of the term
The origin of the name vuvuzela is disputed. It may have originated from Zulu for "making a vuvu noise," directly translated "vuvu-ing" because of the "vuvu" sound it makes, or from township slang related to the word for "shower".[18]
Legal challenge
In early 2010 members of the Nazareth Baptist Church claimed that the vuvuzela belonged to their church, and threatened to pursue legal action to stop fans playing the vuvuzela at the World Cup.[24]
2009 FIFA Confederations Cup
The vuvuzela came to international attention during the run-up to the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup, both hosted in South Africa. The world football governing body, FIFA, expressed concerns that hooligans could use the instrument as a weapon and that businesses could place advertisements on vuvuzelas. However the South African Football Association (SAFA) made a presentation that vuvuzelas were essential for an authentic South African football experience,[3] and FIFA decided in July 2008 to allow vuvuzelas at Confederations Cup.[25] President of FIFA Sepp Blatter opposed banning the vuvuzela, saying "We should not try to Europeanise an African World Cup."[26] FIFA ultimately decided to allow the instrument for the 2010 World Cup as well,[27] except for vuvuzelas longer than one metre.[28]
Some football commentators, players, and international audiences argued against the vuvuzela during the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. During the match between United States and Italy, BBC Sport commentator Lee Dixon referred to the sounds as "quite irritating".[citation needed]
2010 FIFA World Cup
In 2005, prominent black South African columnist and former sportswriter, Jon Qwelane, described the vuvuzela as "an instrument from hell" that had caused him to abandon watching live games, and urged that it be banned before the 2010 World Cup.[10]
During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Hyundai and a local South African advertising agency called Jupiter Drawing Room created the largest working vuvuzela in the world—114 feet (35 m) long—on an unfinished flyover road in Cape Town.[29] The vuvuzela is powered by several air horns attached at the "mouthpiece" end, and it will be blown at the beginning of each of the World Cup matches.
Controversy
During matches
After the Confederations Cup FIFA received complaints from multiple European broadcasters who wanted it banned for the 2010 FIFA World Cup because the sound drowns out the commentators. Prior to the event Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk and Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso also called for a ban, the latter saying the horns make it hard for players to communicate and concentrate while adding nothing to the atmosphere.[26][30]
On 13 June 2010, the BBC reported that the South African organising chief Danny Jordaan was considering a ban of the vuvuzela during matches.[31] Jordaan noted that "if there are grounds to do so, yes [they will be gotten rid of]" and that "if any land on the pitch in anger we will take action."[31] On 15 June, it was reported that 545 complaints had been made to the BBC concerning the noise being made by vuvuzelas during coverage.[32] BBC is reportedly considering an alternate broadcast stream that filters out the ambient noise while maintaining game commentary.[33]
During the event many competitors have criticised and complained about the noise caused by the vuvuzela horns, including France's Patrice Evra who blamed the horns for the team's poor performance.[31] He also claimed that the sound of the vuvuzelas away from the stadiums hampered the ability of the players to get their rest.[34] Other critics include Lionel Messi who complained that the sound of the vuvuzelas hampered communication among players on the pitch,[35] and broadcasting companies, who complained that commentators' voices were being drowned out by the sound.[34] Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo went on record to state that the sound of the vuvuzelas disturbed the teams' concentration.[36]
Others watching on television have complained that the ambient audio feed from the stadium only contains the sounds of the vuvuzelas and the natural sounds of people in the stands are drowned out.[37] A spokesperson for the ESPN network said it was taking steps to minimize the noise of the vuvuzelas on its broadcasts.[38] There are some that see their use during the performance of the national anthems as disrespectful.[39][40] Other critics have also noted that it is seen as disrespectful to be "dismissive of the cultures of the guest team supporters".[41]
During the opening ceremony the announcer had to ask fans using vuvuzelas to be quiet as he could not be heard.[42]
A German sound engineer has offered for sale 45-minute MP3 downloads which, it is claimed, will cancel out the noise of the vuvuzelas during broadcast television matches by means of "active noise control". Scientific commentators have expressed scepticism about the possibility of this being effective.[43][44]
Use outside football games
Vuvuzelas also began to be blown at other locations, leading to a ban by some shopping centres.[45][46] Some World Cup football players complained that they were being awoken in their hotel rooms by the instruments.[47] Demand for earplugs to protect from hearing loss during the World Cup[48] outstripped supply, with many pharmacies running out of stock. Neil van Schalkwyk, manufacturer of the plastic vuvuzela, began selling earplugs to fans.[49]

However other commentators have defended the vuvuzela as being an integral and unique part of South African football culture and say it adds to the atmosphere of the game.[50][51] BBC sports commentator Farayi Mungazi said the sound of the horn was the "recognised sound of football in South Africa" and is "absolutely essential for an authentic South African footballing experience". He also said there was no point in taking the world cup to Africa and then "trying to give it a European feel".[52] The Daily Telegraph's chief sports reporter Paul Kelso described critics of the vuvuzela as "killjoys" and said they should "stop moaning".[53]
In response to the criticism, President of FIFA Sepp Blatter commented, "I have always said that Africa has a different rhythm, a different sound. I don't see banning the music traditions of fans in their own country. Would you want to see a ban on the fan traditions in your country?"[54]

Marketing Tagore is the Latest development in the Emergeing Market as
Tagore art works fetch 1.6 bn pounds at Sotheby's auction!
A dozen works of art by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore fetched a record 1.6 billion pounds at an auction by Sotheby's Tuesday, even as the Indian government failed to stop the sale as it had no legal rights over the collection. The pre-sale estimates of the works was 250,000 pounds.The works, belonging to the Dartington Hall Trust in Devon were dated 1938. They were gifted by Tagore to his old friend Leonard Elmhirst and his wife, American heiress Dorothy Whitney Elmhirst, who owned the estate and set up the trust.
An untitled portrait of a woman from the Lot 26 that was estimated at 40,000 pounds sold for 313,250 pounds, which included the hammer price and the buyer's premium. Another untitled composition of a lady with a fan estimated at 30,000 pounds was sold at 103,250 pounds while another untitled figure with green background, priced at 40,000 pounds, fetched 133,250 pounds.
Sotheby's charges a fee, known as the buyer's price, for every art work sold, which is added to the winning bid or the hammer price to arrive at the exact post-sale estimate of an artwork.
An untitled landscape by the Nobel Laureate with a pre-sale price of 15,000 pounds sold for 97,250 pounds while another landscape in yellow went for 91,250 pounds against a pre-sale tag of 20,000 pounds.
In India, the Communist Party of India-Marxist and other political parties had pressurised the Manmohan Singh government to stop the auction on the ground they were part of India's national heritage. The prime minister said his government would have done so had the legal rights over these works of Tagore been vested with it.
An official of India's culture ministry has been quoted as saying: 'Since it was personally gifted by Tagore to the trust, the trust has 100 percent rights over the paintings. If the Indian government had legal rights, it (the auction) could have been stopped.'
The last time a work by Tagore was auctioned was in March, 2008 when Sotheby's put the 'Death Scene' for sale. It went for 120,000 pounds, setting a record for a work by him.
The works were a blend of figurative drawings and landscapes in mixed media, gouache, water colour, crayons and coloured inks in the Nobel laureate's trademark modern expressionistic style with impressionist influence that reflected the distinct course he was charting in art in an era dominated by the European aesthetic language.
Tagore, known for his doodles and etchings, had created a body of more than 2,500 art works between 1924 to 1941.
Sources at Sotheby's said the 'the prices at the auction marked a return of buoyancy in the auction market after a period of lull'.
Commenting on the Tagore's lot on sale, Holly Blackberry, deputy director of Indian Art at Sotheby's said: 'Bringing the 12 museum-quality paintings by one of the key modern masters of Indian painting has been a privilege.'
'Together, they form a stand-put group and all of them have an impeccable provenance of having been in the possession of Dartington Hall most of their life. Given their exemplary history and the Tagore's status as one of India's most illustrious heritage artist, the sale was an once-in-a-lifetime acquisition opportunity,' Blackberry added.
New auction price records were also set Avinash Chandra and Somnath Hore.
The current set of 12 works will return to Darlington Hall for a brief while when they will be on exhibit during the Tagore Festival May 1-7, 2011 to commemorate Tagore's 150th birth anniversary. This is one of the events the Trust has planned to celebrate the occasion.
It is not known when and how Tagore came to gift these works to the Elmhirsts, but Tagore's ties with the Trust are well documented. Leonard Elmhirst was a close friend of Tagore after the pair met in the US while Leonard was attending Cornell University. After graduating in 1921, Leonard travelled to India to work as Tagore's private secretary.
He not only travelled the world with Tagore, but also created a department for rural reconstruction on an estate belonging to the Tagore family. His experiences of India and the abiding influence of the Indian artist would shape his vision for the educational, social and rural experiment he and his wife Dorothy created at Dartington a few years later.
Tagore visited Dartington on a number of occasions and, in addition to his paintings, Dartington holds a huge archive of photographs, letters and other ephemera relating to the artist and his relationship with Dartington, all of which will remain part of Dartington's extensive archives.
Meanwhile, Indian Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik releases Joint Doctrines!he Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, on Wednesday, released two Joint operational doctrines, namely Joint Doctrine for Perception Management and Psychological Operations and Joint Doctrine for Air and Land Operations.
The doctrines formulated by the Doctrine Directorate of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) to create the requisite synergy between the three Services in important military matters, will go a long way towards enhancing Joint Fighting Capabilities of Indian Armed Forces.
The Joint Doctrine for Air-Land Operations would serve as the keystone doctrinal document for employment of military power in a joint operations scenario.
It establishes the framework of concepts and principles to understand the approach to planning and conduct of air-land operation in a conventional war scenario. It lays down organizations and procedures that would leverage the available technology towards synergistic application of Air Power.
Military Psychological Operations constitute a planned process of conveying a message to selected target audiences, to promote particular themes that result in desired attitudes and behaviour, which affect the achievement of political and military objectives.
Given the potential benefit of Psychological Operations as an effective force multiplier, its use in support of military aims and objectives is considerable.
The Doctrine also provides guidelines for activities related to perception management in sub conventional operations, specially in an internal environment wherein misguided population may have to be brought into the mainstream.
Govt liable to pay Bhopal victims: SC
On both counts, the central government, and not Dow Chemicals, which has taken over UCC, will have to deliver. This is so if one goes by the October 3, 1991 judgment of the Supreme Court in the case Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) vs Union of India. The group of ministers (GoM) constituted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will find that it is the Centre which will have to settle any additional claims for compensation made by victims of the gas tragedy.
In 1991, a five-judge bench comprising then Chief Justice Ranganath Misra and Justices M N Venkatachaliah, K N Singh, A M Ahmadi and N D Ojha had dealt in detail with the adequacy of $470 million agreed under a settlement between the Union government and UCC in 1989 to meet the compensation to be given to nearly 2 lakh victims.
Under the settlement, $470 million paid by UCC was to be taken to have met the civil requirements and also that "all criminal proceedings related to and arising out of the disaster shall stand quashed wherever they may be pending". When the victims and some NGOs sought review of the 1989 judgment of the SC accepting and recording the settlement, the apex court in 1991 agreed that the settlement could not wipe out the criminal liability of the accused.
However, it expressed satisfaction over the amount paid by UCC which in 1991 stood at Rs 1,200 crore. It had said, "Such a contingency may not arise given the size of the settlement-fund... It may be hazardous to belittle the advantages of the settlement in a matter of such complexity. Every effort should be made to protect the victims from the prospects of protracted, exhausting and uncertain litigation."
However, when the victims and related associations repeated their fears about inadequacy of the settlement-fund to meet the extraordinary situation, the bench had said if such a situation arose, then it would be the Centre's duty to meet any shortfall in compensation.
"If it should arise, the reasonable way to protect the interests of victims is to hold that the Union of India, as a welfare state and in the circumstances in which the settlement was made, should not be found wanting in making good the deficiency, if any," the SC had said.

Pranab not to meet Dow officials in US
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday ruled out any meeting with officials of Dow Chemicals, the new owners of Union Carbide Corp, during his visit to the US next week."If I go there at all, I would be addressing the (US-India) CEOs meeting and also have some bilateral meetings with Treasury officials. I do not know of any other meeting. I do not know from where these things come," he told reporters here when asked about reports about his plans to meet with Dow Chemicals CEO Andrew Liveris in US.
The Finance Minister is scheduled to leave for the United States by week end and is slated to attend the US-India CEO Forum meeting on June 22.
In 2001, Dow Chemicals took over Union Carbide Corporation, whose Indian arm was behind one of the world's worst industrial disasters that claimed over 15,000 lives in Bhopal in 1984.
A local court on June 7 convicted seven people, including Union Carbide India's Chairman Keshub Mahindra, to two years imprisonment holding them responsible for the gas leak. Union Carbide's then CEO Warren Anderson was not tried, while another accused passed away during trial.
Reports suggested that Mukherjee would meet Liveris and raise the gas leak matter with him.
Earlier in the day in New Delhi, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, replying to questions about any meeting with Dow officials, said: "No, absolutely not. I mean let's be clear about it. We are the government delegation led by the Finance Minister (and) will have a meeting with the US government people on a wide range of issues."
Mukherjee, who was here to inaugurate "Aaykar Vihar", a residential colony for Income Tax officials, also met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
The Minister refused to answer other questions on Bhopal gas tragedy here, saying that a Group of Ministers is looking into it.
"I am not going to respond to any of these questions (related to Bhopal gas tragedy). There is an appropriate GoM on this issues and they are looking into all aspects," Mukherjee said when asked about safe passage given to the then Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson.
Mukherjee is a member of GoM appointed by the Centre to look into all aspects of Bhopal gas tragedy.
The GoM, which is headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram, was appointed by the Centre after a public outrage over a Bhopal court verdict giving two years' imprisonment to the persons responsible for the tragedy and the then government providing safe passage to Anderson.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked the group of ministers to report back in 10 days.
Anderson's exit from Bhopal systemic failure, says Cong
With questions continuing to be raised over the exit of former Union Carbide Chief Warren Anderson in the wake of Bhopal gas leak tragedy, Congress today blamed it on "systemic" failure and rejected any involvement of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.In a damage-control mode on the issue, the Congress party came out with a new defence on a day when television channels played out the bytes of the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh in the aftermath of the gas leak tragedy in December, 1984 that Anderson was given bail since he agreed to be present in court when charges are made.
Channels also showed the bytes of Anderson in Delhi 26 years ago before leaving for the US that "house arrest or no arrest or bail or no bail, I am free to go home."
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee also ruled out any plans to meet officials of Dow Chemicals, which had bought the Union Carbide, during his visit to the US next week.
At the daily briefing in the AICC, Congress spokesman Manish Tewari was asked about these statements and whether there was no no role for the Central and state governments in Anderson's easy flight back home.
"At the end of it there was a systemic failure and there is a need to address it... If we go into the game of finger-pointing, there can be no end. I can ask the BJP about Rs one lakh it received as donation from Dow as was reflected in the affidavit it filed before the Election Commission.
"There was never ever any intention of Central government to allow any culprit to go scot-free," he said.
The spokesman said a Group of Ministers has been constituted and it would be looking into all aspects of the issue.
Tewari vehemently denied that then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had any knowledge about Anderson being allowed to leave, saying that imputing such motives was "despicable" as Gandhi had lost his mother a month ago and lost his life a few years down the line.
"We are all anguished by the verdict," he said.
Attacking the BJP for finger-pointing on the Anderson issue, Tewari asked why the then Attorney General had changed his opinion.
Standing just outside the Union Carbide plant, Singh had said, "There was no intention to prosecute anyone or try to, sort of, harass anyone."
"Therefore, he (Anderson) was granted bail and he agreed to be present in court when the charges are made," the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister had said.
Asked about the statements and whether the Central government was aware of these, Tewari said, "I reject the conclusions with the contempt they deserve.
Tewari said in the last 26 years after the Bhopal gas tragedy, eight governments came at the Centre and pursued the case along with many national and international NGOs.
"After this, if the country feels and rightly feels so that justice was not done, it clearly points out it was a systemic failure and it needs to be addressed," he said.

Ambush marketing is a marketing campaign that takes place around an event but does not involve payment of a sponsorship fee to the event.[1] For most events of any significance, one brand will pay to become the exclusive and official sponsor of the event in a particular category or categories, and this exclusivity creates a problem for one or more other brands. Those other brands then find ways to promote themselves in connection with the same event, without paying the sponsorship fee and without breaking any laws.

FIFA, however, said the images taken together were "ambush marketing".[6] Also during the tournament, ITV media pundit Robbie Earle was sacked from his role when it was claimed by FIFA that he had sold tickets meant for family and friends on to the Dutch beer company 'Bavaria', who allegedly used them to mount an ambush marketing campaign during the Holland vs. Denmark match on 14th June 2010.[7][8]

For the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the 2015 Cricket World Cup, New Zealand is planning to enact laws to combat ambush marketing, according to former Sports Minister Trevor Mallard.[10]
The London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 contains provisions to attempt to restrict ambush advertising at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

North Korea and Brazil Help Bridge the World's Divides

JOHANNESBURG — In some ways, the World Cup crossed most of its ideological divides at Ellis Park Stadium on Tuesday night.

Brazil, the No. 1 soccer nation of the past 50 years, played North Korea, whose team has taken part at this level only twice in that time span.
Brazil, whose stars are the best and the wealthiest globetrotters in the sport, was facing soccer nobodies from a secretive land that rarely allows its citizens to travel into the free world.
It was the No. 1 team in the rankings of the world governing body, FIFA, against No. 105.
What nonsense the Koreans made of this artificial rating. What pride they exhibited. And how they made Brazil sweat to close out a 2-1 victory in a stadium that once represented a divide in South Africa.
Ellis Park used to be a stronghold of the white Afrikaans game, rugby union. South Africa has moved on. So should everyone, away from the notion that the isolation of half of the Korean Peninsula makes its citizens and players somehow inferior.
Journalists were tersely reminded this week by the team's coach, Kim Jong -hun, that his country must be called the Democratic Republic of Korea. FIFA lists the team as the People's Republic. To much of the world, it is simply North Korea.
Such labels are obsolete when men are at play under the international laws of the game.
South Korea is at this World Cup, too, and performing well. Yet the two Koreas remain separated by a narrow military zone, with soldiers on the alert 24 hours, and their relations are sour.
Under such circumstances, how can a FIFA ranking of 105 mean anything in relation to North Korea's ability to play? If it seldom competes against the outside world, it cannot gain points to climb the ladder. Those rankings, incidentally, are called the FIFA/Coca-Cola rankings, and we can only imagine how well that goes down in Pyongyang.
But this week was a breakthrough, of sorts. Koreans in the north were allowed to watch on television South Korea's 2-0 victory over Greece.
This is a far cry from 1988, when the Seoul Olympics took the world's athletes to the south, but Pyongyang staged an alternative event at its own vast stadium in Pyongyang. And then again in 2002, when South Korea and Japan co-hosted soccer's World Cup, anyone was free to view it — except in North Korea.
At both of those events, the ultimate sadness was that while South Koreans thronged the streets in their millions to celebrate being at the center of world attention, their erstwhile kinfolk north of the D.M.Z. were left out. The world was at play on their doorstep, and they were kept away from it all as if behind a shuttered window.
The man who built up South Korea's soccer association, Chung Mong-joon, has risen to be a vice president of FIFA. His father fled communism, went south, and founded Hyundai. Father and son were responsible, separately, for bringing the Olympics and then the World Cup to South Korea.
So the difference between people from the same land is an imposed one. Soccer is one of the few things that can bridge the differences. There have even been "friendly" matches between the northern and southern teams, always in the south, of course, and always heavily guarded.
If this week achieves anything, it might perhaps be that people are less condescending toward athletes isolated by politics and ideology.
If the North Korean camp is cut off from outside eyes, in contrast to Brazilians holding open training sessions to generate local support for the team, that cannot be the fault of the players. There are, inevitably, rumors that the guards are there more to keep the North's players inside the camp than to keep the outsiders out.
But the exception, the approachable member of North Korea's squad, is its striker, Jong Tae-se. Born in Japan, in an enclave where former Korean workers became part of the Japanese community, Jong enjoys the affluence and fame of a world-class soccer player, and the privilege of being allowed to come and go through Pyongyang more or less as he pleases.
On Tuesday, two faces of Jong were displayed. As the anthem of North Korea played solemnly over Ellis Park, he stood in line, his face broken up with emotion, his eyes openly weeping tears. Then the whistle blew, and Jong ran as if his liberty depended upon it. He chased, he harried, and he got in as many shots on goal as any man, on either side. In the end, however, Jong wasn't blessed with a goal.
Brazil's Maicon was so blessed, however, scoring a magical one. Robinho created the second with a fabulous pass that played three opponents out of the game at a stroke. But the last word, the last goal, was also a fine one, and it came from the left foot of North Korea's Ji Yun-nam.
So the Democratic People's Republic of Korea put on a display far more competitive than most people expected. That proved how little the world knows of sports history. In 1966, in the only other World Cup in which North Korea played, its team sensationally knocked out Italy, winning 1-0 in the English city of Middlesbrough.
The lesson then, as now, is that 11 men on any given day can shock 11 others who consider themselves superior.
According to Jong, his comrades are remarkably "pure," they live to play the game, and no amount of money could make them happier in their goal.
This has been a remarkable opening, an opening perhaps of that shutter keeping out the world's games. North and South Korea were drawn against one another in qualifying for this World Cup, and enmities arose over the playing of the anthems and raising of the flags, so much so that the second game between them, the designated home game for Pyongyang, was played in China.
Their paths are unlikely to cross at this World Cup, but similarities can be seen in their spirit, their bodies, their pride. They are clearly brothers in different national uniforms.

The irony was too stark to be missed when Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati started campaigning for the upcoming Assembly polls in Bihar.
The Bahujan Samaj Party ( BSP) chief played her ' pro- poor' card to the hilt before the thousands listening to her in the blistering heat. Behind her were at least four air- conditioners to shield her from the soaring temperature and humidity.
The idea was clear. The campaign managers did not want her to suffer any discomfort when she addressed supporters - zonal workers from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa - from a huge dais at Patna's historic Gandhi Maidan.
Calling for the unity of the poor from all sections of society, a ' cool' Mayawati announced that the BSP would field candidates in all 243 assembly seats in Bihar."There will be no internal and external understanding with any party," she said. Assembly polls in the state is scheduled to be held before November.
The party would follow the same strategy in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa as well. The BSP had won only five seats in the 2005 assembly polls in Bihar. But Mayawati claimed her party's base had increased manifold in Bihar since then. She asked the cadres to emulate the party's UP formula of uniting all communities. "You should spread this ideology at the grassroots level to solicit support for the BSP," she said.
Mayawati's entry into the fray will make Bihar's political arena crowded. With the Congress and the Left deciding to go it alone, the state is headed for a multi- cornered contest where the ruling Janata Dal (United)- Bharatiya Janata Party coalition is primarily pitted against the Rashtriya Janata Dal- Lok Janshakti Party alliance of Lalu Prasad and Ram Vilas Paswan.
Mayawati has been trying to increase her base in Bihar beyond a few western districts bordering Uttar Pradesh.

Toronto, June 15 (IANS) About 10,000 Hindus from Canada and the US will join week-long ceremonies here Friday for the opening of a unique south Indian temple modelled on the 9th century Sringeri Peetam.
Built at a cost of $11 million and named after the goddess of wisdom Sri Sharadamba, the temple will be consecrated with water from more than 250 rivers around the world.
These include the Ganga and the Yamuna and the Manosarovar Lake.
The temple, which will also have nine other deities, has been built with marble and granite imported from India.
'Apart from serving as a religious shrine, the temple will also house a museum on the life of Adi Shakaracharya who set up four matts in all four corners of India,' temple president Lucky Lakshmanan told IANS.
Twenty pandits have arrived from Sringeri in Karnataka for performing the consecration ceremonies. They will be joined by 10 priests from North America.
'The statues of the deities have also come from Jaipur,' temple publicity committee chairman K. Sundaram said.
The consecration ceremonies will begin Friday, with the chanting of mantras from the four Vedas to 'energise' the water from over 250 rivers.
'The chanting will continue for two days after which the holy water be fully energised. We will start the actual ceremony June 20,' temple religious affairs chief Raghu Ranganathan said.
Called Mahakumbhabhishekam, the consecration ceremony will include the chanting of mantras and bathing of the deities with the holy water to pass the 'energy' to the deities.
'This ceremony will make the deities divine and powerful to bestow their blessings on the devotees,' says Ranganathan.
The ceremonies will continue till June 27 during which havan will be performed to propitiate the deities. These will conclude with the pouring of 1,004 vessels of 'energised' waters on the deities.
Famous Indian singers, including Narendra Chanchal, will sing bhajans during the ceremonies.

Vuvuzela vs. Sound Engineer: Has the World Cup Stadium Horn Met Its Match?

Though these multicolored horns might look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book, World Cup followers can attest that the vuvuzela is a loud and droning reality. South Africa's soccer stadiums are resounding with their buzzing calls, driving TV audiences to distraction and causing many a viewer to reach for the mute button.
Some spectators have called for bans on the instrument, but FIFA has refused. Its president, Sepp Blatter, said via Twitter: "I don't see banning the music traditions of fans in their own country. Would you want to see a ban on the fan traditions in your country?"
But there may be a technological fix, an audio filter meant to cancel out, acoustically, the collective roar of the plastic horns.
The Telegraph reports that German recording and mixing engineer Clemence Schlieweis believes that viewers can cancel out the sounds blaring from their televisions by playing his 45-minute track of an "inverse" sound wave. He made the sound by manipulating a recording from a match broadcast, and compares his technique to ones commonly used by sound engineers to improve recordings' quality, to remove the buzz of an air conditioner from an interview, for example.
But some acoustics experts are skeptical, given that the vuvuzela's sounds are anything but uniform. Trevor Cox at the University of Salford, told The Telegraph:
"I can't see how it could work. The vuvuzela chorus may come across as a single sound on television, but it is actually hundreds of instruments being blown at different times."
But if Schlieweis's recording can't beat the vuvuzela, another technology is allowing spectators to join the chorus. The vuvuzela iPhone app is the number one downloaded free iPhone app in Argentina, Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, UK, and South Africa, with reportedly over one million downloads.

MEET the horn stars who are wowing South Africa.
La Vuvuzela are a three-piece girl band named after the African horn that has droned throughout every match in this year's World Cup.Translated literally — and perhaps misleadingly — vuvuzela means "beautiful sound" and Tarryn, Tamsin and Samantha aren't too bad to look at either.
The song and dance trio feature on the official album for the Bafana Bafana, South Africa's team, alongside the likes of UK based reggae legend Eddy Grant and Dr Alban.
They are also set to play to an estimated TV audience of 30million on Mexico's Televiso ahead of tomorrow's group fixtures.
Their sporting connection doesn't end there. The girls will make some personal appearances at fan parks during the remainder of the World Cup.
And, not wanting to be left out, rugby union fans have invited La Vuvuzela to become celebrity ambassadors for the Springboks Supporters Club.
