We have been tracking the information on the Gulf coast Deep Horizon oil spill developments as best we can.  On Monday, we plan to go out on chartered boats to see some of the destruction first-hand and to assist in the assessment of the negative impact the spill is having on wildlife.  We will be taking photos of some of the barrier islands and sending our reports to state wildlife and fisheries agents.  

We have been advised, however, that in the State of Louisiana there are a total of only 100 federal and state agents on the water, collecting oiled wildlife!!!  There are estimates calculating the number of animals needing to be captured and treated in the hundreds of thousands.  Individuals who are not credentialed are prohibited from handling or capturing any animals (marine mammals, reptiles or birds) from the marshes.  Currently, only federal or state wildlife agents are authorized to capture the distressed animals

According to our sources, several state wildlife agents are not deployed in the rescue effort but rather are conducting classes on fishing around the state !!! We need to deploy hundreds of more agents.  The Secretary of the Department of Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries determines the allocation of the department's resources and the assignment of its employees.

This is the nation's largest oil related disaster.  In terms of the loss of life of animals, potential species destruction, ecological, cultural and economic devastation, the U.S. has never experienced a catastrophe of this magnitude.  Every authorized individual currently performing non-essential duties must be deployed to assist in mitigating the devastation that is unfolding each moment of each day as a result of the oil spill. 

Please call and leave a message for Robert Barham, Secretary of the Louisiana Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries, asking him to deploy more agents to aid in the capture and recovery of affected wildlife.  Please also leave a message, requesting that he ask for additional federal agents or agents from other states, if our numbers are too low for the task.  Please call 225-765-2800 and leave a polite message.
