DAMASCUS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Leader of the Syrian Communist party Qadri Jamil announced Saturday the formation of Pioneering Revolutionist Party that would combine communists and leftists in the country.

Jamil, who is also an opposition figure and leader of the opposition Front of Change and Liberation, said during a press conference held Saturday in the capital of Damascus that the possibility of a direct military intervention in Syria has decreased.

However, he warned of an increasing danger of the eruption of conflicts in the region "within the framework of US, Western and Zionist plans to enflame the entire region with a series of internal and external wars."

Jamil, who represents moderate Syrian opposition parties, also warned of increasing violent acts inside Syria.

Syria needs the immediate formation of a national unity government that comprises representatives from the ruling party and the opposition "on the basis of consensus to defend the homeland and national unity," he said.

In August, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued two decrees, allowing the formation of political parties, as part of the government's reform program.

The Syrian government has been dominated by the Baath party since 1963 when its members took power after a military coup. It allowed the existence of 10 other socialist-oriented parties including the Communist party, the Socialist Unionist party, which enrolled them under its umbrella by an alliance called The National Progressive Front.

The 10 parties are practically margined and tightly controlled by al-Baath party. Since the party law was endorsed, about four new parties were formed.

National Committee for Unity of Syrian Communists Holds Extraordinary Conference

DAMASCUS, (SANA)- Secretary of the National Committee for the Unity of Syrian Communists, Dr. Qadri Jamil, on Saturday said the possibility of direct foreign intervention in Syria alone has receded, as the region faces the risk of an all-out explosion in light of effort by the U.S. and Western Imperialism and the international Zionism to inflame the region with a chain of internal and external wars with the aim of seizing its energy resources.

Speaking at an extraordinary conference of the National Committee, Dr. Jamil noted that the financial and social crisis facing the US and the western countries drove them to think that war on others' ground has become an inevitable necessity to control the oil and gas resources.

He said the escalated violence of the foreign-backed armed terrorist groups inside Syria and the retreat of peaceful protests as well as the emergence of new alignments inside the society, based on stances of foreign interference and internal violence, demands work for taking measures to enhance defense of the homeland.

"Measures are needed to protect national unity, exterminate the armed terrorist group, turn toward a democratic economic and social program and start comprehensive national dialogue," Dr. Jamil added.

Member of the Politburo of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Abu Ahmad Fu'ad, considered national dialogue on the basis of national unity of the people and land is the way to get Syria out of the crisis it is going through.

He stressed the Front's support to the reform program announced by the leadership in Syria and rejection to any foreign interference in its internal affairs, underscoring the necessity of foiling any attempt at imposing the West and Zionism's hegemony on the Arab world.

For his part, Secretary General of the International Confederation of Arab Trade Unions, Rajab Ma'touq, expressed wonder at the Arab League's decisions against Syria and its people the like of which the UN could not pass, stressing the need to fight any call for foreign interference in the internal affairs of the Arab countries.

Ali Haidar, head of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, said that one of the most important means to get out of the crisis in Syria is to form a national unity government and launch the comprehensive national dialogue, in a way to meet the rightful demands of the people.

At the end of the conference, the participants agreed to replace the name of the Committee with that of 'The Popular Will Party'.
