The Madurai bench of the Madras high court ordered notice to authorities to ban the usage of the word 'human rights' in the name by any society, NGO or association    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/HC-bans-usage-of-word-human-rights-in-name-of-organisations/articleshow/11139484.cms  MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court ordered notice to authorities to ban the usage of the word 'human rights' in the name by any society, NGO or association.  In his petition, M Akbar Raja, an advocate also sought an interim injunction restraining The Human RightsOrganisation of Madurai from conducting a national level conference on December 18 at Ramanathapuram. The petitioner said that the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had barred the use of the word 'human rights' by any society, non governmental organisation or association in Tamil Nadu. He submitted that by prefixing the word 'human rights', organizations claimed to be connected to the National Human Rights Commission or State Human Rights organisation as well as to the International Human Rights organisation and misled people by collecting fees for membership.  SHRC had made it is mandatory for all societies, non governmental organisations or associations in the state to refrain from using the word 'human rights' in their name board, sign board, letter head, visiting card and in all correspondences. The commission also urged district collectors to take action against any unscrupulousNGOs misleading the public by doing the same. Officials were asked to be cautious while accepting invitations for functions organised by NGOs that claimed to be human rights organisations. The petitioner further said that they were coercing government officials to act in a particular manner and running kangaroo courts. He added that though he had made a representation to officials, no action was taken. Hence he preferred the present petition.
