| Urgent: Make a call to stop a destructive deficit deal. | Democrats in the House and the Senate can and must stop a bad deal from happening. But they need to hear that their constituents want them to do so. | | | | | | Dear Friend, The deal to raise the debt ceiling has been announced and the House Republicans have essentially won everything they wanted, with more to come. - More than a trillion dollars in spending reductions at a time the economy has stalled completely.
- No revenue increases, even as trivial as closing oil company loopholes.
- And if at least $1.2 trillion in ADDITIONAL cuts are not enacted by Congress in the next year, automatic spending cuts — including to Medicare — will go into effect.
Pick up the phone and tell Sen. Landrieu: Vote No on a destructive deficit deal. Click here for contact info and a sample script. We're at this point because House Republicans convinced President Obama that they were crazy enough to wreck the economy if he did not capitulate. So he did, even though many believe that President Obama could invoke the 14th Amendment to the Constitution in order to pay all our bills. A White House spokesman repeatedly tried to take the 14th Amendment off the table, and now President Obama is trumpeting an all-cuts deal with no new tax revenues as a model of tough compromise and bipartisan common sense. It isn't. Progressive heroes Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Raul Grijalva, co-chair of the Progressive Caucus, have already announced that they will vote No. We also urge a No vote. Please call Sen. Landrieu today, before it is too late. Click here for contact info and a sample script. This deal will hurt an already fragile economy and will convince House Republicans to repeat this successful tactic again. With this huge victory, their demands will only escalate. Their next opportunity is in just two months when the 2012 budget must pass. For those who are convinced that President Obama has done the best that he could, consider where we started. Many of these same Republicans have voted repeatedly to give former presidents — including George W. Bush — an increase in the debt ceiling without any conditions attached. At first President Obama did demand that Congress do the same for him. But he quickly gave that up, demanding instead a balanced approach of both cuts and taxes on oil companies and the wealthiest individuals. Then he offered to cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security if ANY loopholes were closed. Then he offered to cut over a trillion in spending even if NO changes were made to the tax system. And now he is pushing cuts of over $2.2 trillion with no promise of any tax revenue. While the president's press secretary has tried to take the 14th Amendment off the table, President Obama can put it back on. And if this deal doesn't pass either of the House or the Senate, President Obama will be forced to do what's best for the country and invoke the 14th Amendment to avoid default. Call Sen. Landrieu to urge a No vote on this terrible deal. Click here for the contact info and a sample script. Thank you for speaking out. Your activism matters.
