Priya Singh 3:30pm Feb 11 MUMBAI: Parents of students from Diamond Jubilee High School in Mazgaon have cried foul over the admission form which, among other things, asks parents how much they earn each month. The form also asks parents questions on their occupation, the organization they work for, their designation and the college and university they have graduated from. ''This violates the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act,'' said Chetan Pednekar of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena, the students' wing of the MNS, which has taken up the issue with the education department. ''I discussed the matter with Mumbai's deputy director of education Sunil Chauhan and he promised action against the school,'' said Pednekar. Chauhan was not available for comment. Leena Aparajit, head of education at the school, said while the form does have a column on income, it was not mandatory for parents to fill it. ''We are extremely pluralistic and have students from all strata of society. We never discriminate on the basis of a parent's income. We have admitted many children whose parents have left the column blank,'' said Aparajit. ''The state has not drawn up guidelines on how to implement the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Delhi, for instance, has drawn up strigent guidelines on how the admission form should look and how the process should be carried out. When Maharashtra does so, we will be the first to implement it,'' added Aparajit.
