Leader of Oppressed people of the world warns of hijacking uprisings
Mon Feb 21, 2011 11:15AM

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has urged Muslim scholars and elites not to let arrogant powers "hijack" popular movements in Islamic countries.

"The elite's guidance is needed to assist the people of nations to prevent the arrogant apparatus from hijacking the glorious popular movements [of the Muslim world] and steal their uprising. In that case the future of the Islamic Ummah and the region would be bright," the Leader said in a meeting with ambassadors and representatives of Islamic countries in Tehran on Monday.

As the demand for political reform spreads throughout the Middle East and North Africa, are some governments increasingly turning to violence to quell these uprisings?

Reports say at least 170 people were killed in Libya when the army fired on demonstrators demanding the resignation of Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's president. His son has warned of a bloodbath if pro-democracy protesters do not back down.

British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived in Cairo on Monday, the first foreign leader in the Egyptian capital since the downfall of longtime president Hosni Mubarak, a British embassy official said.

"We can confirm that the prime minister has arrived," the official told AFP, declining "for security reasons" to disclose what his plans would be or who he would be seeing. Cameron arrived in the Middle East against the backdrop of uprisings against long-established Arab regimes from the Gulf through North Africa.

Dozens of workers also joined the demonstrators in Manama on Sunday, and more than 1,000 medics marched on the square to demand the resignation of the health minister, whom they accused of slowing aid to protesters during a deadly police crackdown, reported AFP.

After nightfall, thousands more people converged on the roundabout, which has been the focal point of demonstrations that have rocked the small but strategic Persian Gulf kingdom since February 14.

The opposition has also called for a large protest on Tuesday afternoon in the hope that tens of thousands of people will converge on Pearl Square, according to INAA, Bahrain's main Shia opposition group.
