In July, the coalition announced a judge-led inquiry on torture and rendition, the moving of prisoners from one country to another for interrogation. In practice, however, the coalition has refused to release information regarding the UK's complicity in torture and rendition flights to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Extraordinary Rendition, even though it relates to decisions made under Labour.

Spectre of terrorism hangs over Europe 01 Jan 2011 The terrorist threat to Britain is ''as serious as it has ever been'', David Cameron has warned. In his new year message, the British Prime Minister says security services are facing a daily struggle to stop plots that would ''do terrible harm to our people and our economy''. The risk of terrorism has been demonstrated by the arrest of nine men accused of plotting a Christmas bombing campaign with targets including the London Stock Exchange and Big Ben.

B.C. link traced to WikiLeaks avengers: Smoking Gun website 31 Dec 2010 A global network accused of Internet attacks against perceived WikiLeaks opponents has a link to B.C. Agents with search warrants giving them the right [?!?] to seize records relating to the attacks copied the contents of hard drives on at least one server belonging to Tailor Made Servers, in Carrolton, Tex., a suburb of Dallas. The raid was part of an investigation into "Operation Payback," a series of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks against PayPal, MasterCard, Visa and other sites by groups referring to themselves as "4Chan" or "Anonymous" in response to the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

NYT: U.S. Diplomats Work Like "Marketing Agents" For Boeing By Curtis Cartier 03 Jan 2011 The holidays are over. But the November 28 WikiLeaks diplomatic cable dump is the gift that keeps on giving. The latest present was unwrapped by The New York Times in a story published Sunday. It seems that when it comes to multibillion-dollar commercial and military airplane deals, U.S. government officials might as well clock in as Boeing salespeople. Per the Times: United States diplomats were acting like marketing agents, offering deals to heads of state and airline executives whose decisions could be influenced by price, performance and, as with all finicky customers with plenty to spend, perks.

Fighters scrambled and Capital building evacuated as 'mystery' aircraft flies over Washington 02 Jan 2011 A mystery aircraft prompted an evacuation of the Capitol building and scrambling of military fighter jets today - but authorities said the false alarm was caused by a commercial airliner briefly losing radio contact. A Federal Aviation Administration official said a Piedmont Airlines plane in the Washington DC area briefly lost radio contact and military planes took off to find it. FAA spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said: 'Shortly after that we reestablished contact with the plane, and it has been on the ground at (Reagan National Airport) for a while. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials are interviewing the pilots.'

Weep for the Polar Bears By Kendra Pierre-Louis 31 Dec 2010 In depressing but not entirely unsurprising environmental conservation news, researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology have found that the polar bears roaming Norway's isolated Svalbard posses the highest organic pollutant load of any animal on the planet. The bears achieve this dubious distinction thanks to ocean and air currents which sweep many of the industrial pollutants from North America, Western Europe and Asia into the arctic.

Rep. Peter King to Ramp Up Immigration Crackdown 28 Dec 2010 Rep. Peter King (R) plans to use his new bully pulpit to target immigration. The New York congressman, who will become the new chairman of the House Homeland Security next week, told the New York Post that he will push for legislation to tighter border security and arrest more immigrants crossing the border illegally. His proposals will target private companies [Yeah, right!] that employ undocumented immigrants and beefing up local police to give them free range to make immigration arrests.

Previous lead stories: US military investigates 'death squad' accused of murdering Afghans --Alleged crimes by US unsubs include mutilating bodies, collecting fingers and skulls from corpses as trophies 29 Dec 2010 The US military is investigating the leadership of an army brigade whose soldiers are accused of running a "kill team" that murdered Afghan civilians, as further evidence emerges of widespread complicity in the deaths. A brigadier general is conducting a "top to bottom" review of the 5th Stryker brigade after five of its soldiers were committed for trial early next year charged with involvement in the murders of three Afghans and other alleged crimes including mutilating their bodies, and collecting fingers and skulls from corpses as trophies.

Terrorist watch list: One tip now enough to put name in database, officials say --440,000 on list 29 Dec 2010 A year after a Nigerian man allegedly tried to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner, officials say they have made it easier to add individuals' names to a terrorist watch list and improved the government's ability to thwart an attack in the United States. Since then, senior counterterrorism officials say they have altered their criteria so that a single-source tip, as long as it is deemed credible [?!?], can lead to a name being placed on the watch list. The government's master watch list is one of roughly a dozen lists, or databases, used by counterterrorism officials.

Police demand new powers to stop and search terror suspects 29 Dec 2010 Police have asked the government for a new counter-terrorism power to stop and search people without having to suspect them of involvement in crime, the Guardian has learned... A previous law allowing counter-terrorism stops without suspicion, section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000, was scrapped this year by the home secretary, Theresa May, after European judges struck it down for breaching human rights. But police, including the Metropolitan force, which leads the UK fight against terrorism, say they need a boost to their counter-terrorism powers, which they worry are now too weak.
