I Have NOt visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands as yet. My father Late Pulin Babu did visit every refugee settlement in the mainland but even he could NOT afford to visit the Island, the Home away Home for the SC OBC Bengali refugees. I want to visit Mansarovar as I aspire to go to Andaman and Nicobar. My Pocket does NOT allow. Now, my health has complicated the Prospect.

My Father used to repent that the Marxist in Bengal Opposed Refugee Rehabilitation in Andaman otherwise they could have UNITED themselves in singular Identity as they have been scattered all over the country.

But Pulin Babu was well connected with Andaman. The Andaman MP then Manoranjan Bhakto had been his close friend. Even Bhakto did NOT care to arange his visit to Andaman as the Man was instrumental to connect him with the mainland beside Congress Network.

Bhakto`s daughter, Anita Mandal is the chair person of Salt Lake Municipality as a TMC nominee. I had to do nothing with Congress as I have Nothing to do with TMC.I know neither of the Daughter and Father.Rather, I have been knowing some people from the islands who belong to Grass Root Level!

Only day before, coincidentally, I saw a Animal Planet film on the Swimming Elephants Enslaved working in the Refugee Resettlement at the Have luck island in the Andamans.

I had serious differences with respected Mahashweta Devi as some people from the Island called me to help them as the Refugees and tribal People were displaced from the Jungles of the Island some years ago. Some Ten Thousand Santhals were ejected out.

Mahashweta Di refused to raise the issue. It was rather greater disappointment as she has always been projected as the Protagonist of the aboriginal Landscape.

I knew that the Bengali Brahaminical Intelligentsia has NOTHING to do with the Plight of the Refugees. But I expected the Intelligentsia to react on Tribal Issues!

Sometimes, Andaman is represented in the Little Mag fair in Kolkata as Anadi Babu, an editor of a little mag published from the Island who comes often.

Last time, I spent some days with kamalesh Biswas who had come over all the way from Port Blair to join Bamcef Patna Convention. We Traveled together and spent all the Five days together in the convention. He personally knew Mr Manoranjan Bhakto, the MP.

It was the longest ever interactions with Andaman for me.

Often, I am lucky to talk with some refugee leaders on Phone.

But I had no idea about the Circumstances and environment surrounding.

Though the Animal Planet film was all about the life of the Enslaved Elephants, I was seeing beyond.

As the Elephants and our People resettled there and even in the mainland countrywide lead Identical Life without any Identity.

Our people do Swim the Oceans of Pain and Persecution infinite. As the elephants are Enslaved, our People may not be LIBERATED. They have to continue to Hover on many more Islands destined for EXODUS and Holocaust!

East Bengali Refugees are people that left East Bengal following the partition of Bengal, which was part of the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947.

[hide]

History

In 1947, Bengal was partitioned into the Indian state of West Bengal and the Pakistani province of East Bengal. East Bengal was later renamed East Pakistan, which subsequently broke away from Pakistan to form the independent country of Bangladesh. Most of Sylhet district in Assam also joined East Pakistan and was subsequently considered to be East Bengal.

Settlement

The majority of East Bengali refugees settled in the new state of West Bengal, but a significant number[quantify] also moved to the Barak Valley of Assam and the princely state of Tripura which eventually joined India in 1949. Around 0.5 million were also settled in other parts of India, including the East Pakistan Displaced Persons' Colony (EPDP) in Delhi (subsequently renamed Chittaranjan Park) and Orissa. The estimated 0.5 million Bengalis in Delhi and 0.3 million in Mumbai are also largely East Bengali refugees and their descendants.[1]

Scope

The exact number of refugees has never been officially collected and estimates vary considerably.
In the immediate aftermath of partition, commonly attributed figures suggest around 3 million East Bengalis migrating to India and 864,000 migrants from India to East Pakistan.[2] Indian government estimates suggest around 2.6 million migrants leaving East Bengal for India and 0.7 million migrants coming to East Pakistan from India.[3]

Further Migration

1950s

In 1950, it is estimated that a further one million refugees crossed into West Bengal.[4] The 1951 Census of India recorded that 27% of Kolkata's population was East Bengali refugees.[5]

1960s

Migration continued, primarily from East Pakistan to India, right up to the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, both on an on-going basis and with spikes during periods of particular communal unrest such as the 1964 riots and the 1965 India-Pakistan War, when it is estimated that 600,000 refugees left for India.[6] Estimates of the number of refugees up to 1970 are over 5 million to West Bengal alone.[7] This includes around 4.1 million coming between 1946–1958 and 1.2 million coming between 1959 and 1971.[8]

1970s

Another major influx came in 1971 during the Bangladesh Liberation War. It is estimated that around 10 million East Bengali refugees entered India during the early months of the war, of whom 1.5 million may have stayed back after Bangladesh became independent.[9]
The outflow of Hindus from East Bengal had a particularly negative effect on the Hindu community of East Pakistan and subsequently Bangladesh, as a significant portion of the region's educated middle class and political leadership left. The heights reached by many of the East Bengali migrants and their descendants, including Amartya Sen's Nobel Prize and Megh Nad Saha's pioneering work in Astrophysics are considerable.

Can Elephants swim?

Like all mammals (except humans and apes, who have to learn how to swim), elephants are very good, untiring swimmers.
Elephants move all four legs to swim and are able to move quite fast like that. Their big body provides enough floatation while the trunk acts like a snorkel.

How do Elephants Swim?

Elephants mostly swim with their face above and their mouth below the water surface. They breathe through their trunk which they use as a snorkel.

Can Elephants Swim Long Distances?

These strong animals can swim long distances without a problem. Experts suppose that elephants once swam from Southern India to Sri Lanka where they settled.

Rajan the swimming elephant

Play in either Real OR Windows Media players
Elephants love water and hosing themselves down to keep cool, but it is very unusual to see an elephant swimming in the sea.
They naturally do not like sea water but in the Andaman Islands, off the east coast of India, ten elephants were taught to swim so that they could carry logs between the islands.
That was in the 1970s - now only three of those elephants still survive - two have been returned to the wild and no longer swim, which leaves only one seaborne elephant called Rajan.
Extreme sports and underwater photographer Jody MacDonald went to Havelock Island in the Andamans specially to swim and photograph Rajan. She spoke to Outlook's Candida Beveridge.

Settlement in Andaman  Islands
Penal Settlement
The British Government allotted house sites and the agricultural lands to the convicts under the provisions of Section 5 of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Regulation 1926. The allotment of Agriculture land was made to any person to any land either by way of  "Grant" or by issuing licenses on conditions laid down therein. The Grant for the cultivation of long lived crops such as coconut, coffee, rubber and the like for a period of thirty years and renewed for further period on the previous sanction of the Central Government. License for Agricultural Land as a Non-occupancy tenant was issued to any person for paddy cultivation, horticulture and short lived crops.  These Non-occupancy tenants thereafter brought under Occupancy Tenants, after  cultivating five years continuously and had not contravened any provisions laid down in the license while allotment was made.
Colonisation and Rehabilitation
After Independence the problem that faced by the government was the need for building up population for utilisation of the available land for agricultural purposes and for providing labour for the exploiting of the valuable forest. Displaced persons including agriculturist  from East Pakistan were readily available for settlement and the idea of colonisation of the islands was emerged. Between the period from 1949 to 1952, 450 refugee families from East Pakistan were settled on the readily available and (about 3000 acres in South Andaman) abandoned by the departing ex-convicts.
During  1953, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration issued proclamation which was published  in the leading Newspapers of Mainland who are willing to settle in Andaman under colonisation scheme. Accordingly, agriculture families from different states were brought to these islands  and allotted land for cultivation.

Andaman and nicobar islands

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands  is one of the main  union territory of India. This union territory of andaman and nicobar islands name is often abbreviated to A & N Islands, or ANI. It is located in the bay of bengal.. It comprises two island groups - the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands - which separate the Andaman Sea to the east from the Indian Ocean. The Andaman Islands (10º30'-14ºN; 92-93ºE) are the emerged part of a mountain chain and lie on a ridge, which extends southward from the Irrawaddy delta area of Burma.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands (6º30'-9º30'N; 93-94ºE) are high islands forming the southward extension of this mountain chain. Floating in splendid isolation, east of the Indian mainland, is the archipelago of 572 emerald islands, islets and rocks known as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This Union Territory is spread over a distance nearly 800 Kms. from North to South with 38 inhabited islands. A hill range extending from Burma (Myanmar) to Indonesia, these undulating islands are covered with dense forests and an endless variety of exotic flora & fauna.
These two groups are separated by the 10° N parallel, the Andamans lying to the north of this latitude, and the Nicobars to the south. The capital of andaman and nicobar islands  is the Andamanese island town of Port Blair. The andaman and nicobar island's population as per the most recent (2001) Census of India was 356,152. Added together, the total land area of the territory is approximately 8,249 km²
Andaman & Nicobar Islands have also recently been recognized as a world-class eco-tourist destination to discover the under-water treasures of marine life. Andaman & Nicobar Islands has many sandy crystal clear beaches and it's an eco-friendly tourist destination with all sorts of comforts ranging from five star accommodations to cheap youth hostels.
Andaman &Nicobar Island offers beautiful island vacations and beach tours. Each island in Andaman's has its own uniqueness and beauty. The beaches in Andaman's are very clean &crystal clear. In no place, we can find both island vacations and beach tours in a same place.
Andaman Islands Origin

The Andaman and Nicobar islands have been inhabited for several thousand years, at the very least. The earliest archaeological evidence yet documented goes back some 2,200 years; however, the indications from genetic, cultural and linguistic isolation studies point to habitation going back 30,000 to 60,000 years, well into the Middle Paleolithic.
Mythologically, the name Andaman is presumed to be derived from hanuman, the monkey god, who was known to the malayalis as 'handuman'. Since pre-historic times, these islands were the home of aboriginal tribes. The tribes of the Andaman group of islands were the great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas and Sentinalese, all of Negro origin, while the tribes of Nicobars, the Nicobarese and Shompens, both of mongoloid stock.

In the Andaman Islands, the various Andamanese peoples maintained their separated existence through the vast majority of this time, diversifying into distinct linguistic, cultural and territorial groups. By the 1850s when they first came into sustained contact by outside groups, the indigenous peoples of the Andamans were:
  • the Great Andamanese, who collectively represented at least 10 distinct sub-groups and languages;
  • the Jarawa;
  • the Jangil (or Rutland Jarawa);
  • the Onge; and
  • the Sentinelese (most isolated of all the groups).

In total, these peoples numbered somewhere around 7,000 at the time of these first encounters. As the numbers of settlers from the mainland increased (at first mostly prisoners and involuntary indentured labourers, later purposely recruited farmers), these indigenous peoples lost territory and numbers in the face of land encroachment and the effects of various epidemic diseases.
The islands provided a temporary maritime base for ships of the Marathas in the 17th century. The legendary privateer, admiral Kanhoji Angre harassed colonial shipping routes with a base in the islands.
The first settlement by the british took place in 1789, which was later abandoned in 1796. The second settlement was basically a penal settlement, taken up in 1858,after the first world war of independence, followed by the settlement of convicts, 'moplas' some tribes from central and united provinces, refugees from erstwhile east Pakistan, burma and srilanka as well as ex-servicemen. Generally, Andaman is used as a prison during british period The surrounding seas are equally rich in marine bio-diversity. They harbour more than 1,200 species of fish, 350 species of echinoderms, 1000 species of mollusks and many more other forms of life, among vertebrates dugong, dolphin and whale are common. Mahatma Gandhi Marine Natinal Park is rich in corals, varities of colourful fishes, sea turtles, etc., besides other marine life, andaman is also a bird's paradise.

Sandy beaches of these islands are famous for turtles nesting. Important species of turtles that are present on these islands include leather back turtle, green sea turtle, hawksbill turtle and olive ridly turtle. Water monitor lizard, salt-water crocodiles, reticulate python, etc are also seen here. Corals and coral reefs are the most fascinating part of marine eco-system here.

Swimming with Rajan the Elephant

« Previous page | Posted on: July 16, 2009 | Filed under: The Andaman Islands
Rajan the elephant is "semi retired", his mahout explains, usually he roams freely on a forest lined beach in the Andaman Islands but occasionally he turns up for work. This morning he has arrived on Havelock Beach at dawn to swim with us, we walk into the turquoise tinged crystal clear water and he lumbers in after us. At 56 he is pretty old and on land he is very relaxed, once in the water the weight seems to have been lifted off his shoulders and he glides along swooping left and right occasionally to avoid swimming into us. He is fully immersed and every 30 seconds or so reaches up to the air above with his trunk to breath.
Originally Rajan was trained to swim from island to island to help loggers heave their booty into the sea. From there it was collected by boats and shipped off to the mainland. Thankfully the logging is now banned and all of the Andaman's elephants can relax. Most were released into the wild and have never been seen since, although rumors persist of herds of swimming elephants. No one really knows wether they do still commute across the channels that seperate the Andaman Islands, it's just one of the many questions surrounding these beautiful and mysterious islands.
The best place to visit Rajan from is Barefoot Resort, an eco hotel on Havelock Island. It's a truely magical place with lovely thatched cottages set back from Radha Nagar Beach, one of the top 10 beaches in Asia according to Time magazine. To see more amazing photos of Rajan swimming visit Steve Bloom's website and type "elephant swimming" in the search box.

Havelock Island (Hindi: हवेलोच्क, Tamil: ஹேவ்லாக்), is the largest of the islands with an area of 113.93 km2 which comprise Ritchie's Archipelago, a chain of islands to the east of Great Andaman in the Andaman Islands. Havelock is situated 57 km North East of Capital City Port Blair. The population numbered 5,354 as of the census of 2001.[1]

[hide]

[edit] Overview

The island is named after Henry Havelock, a British general active in India. The island's current population consists of Bengali settlers.
It is one of the few places that the administration of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands union territory of India has permitted and encouraged development of tourism, with a focus on promoting eco-tourism.
Havelock Island avoided much of the devastation which was visited upon most of the shores affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and its resultant tsunami, and there were no documented casualties.
In May 2010, a 25-year-old North-American was snorkeling in the crystalline waters near Radhanagar Beach when a massive saltwater crocodile closed its jaws upon her, dragging her down beneath the surface. Her body was discovered two days later. According to Indian government statistics, there have been 24 crocodile attacks on humans in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the past 25 years, including four fatalities. All previous attacks have been in inland creek areas and the attack on the American tourist was the first ever in open sea[2][3]
Beach No. 7 on the western coast, better known as "Radha Nagar" Beach, is one of the most popular beaches on Havelock and was named "Best Beach in Asia" by Time in 2004.[4]. Other notable beaches include Elephant Beach on the northwest coast and Vijaynagar Beach (No. 5), Beach No. 3 and Beach No. 1 on the east coast.
The five villages are Govinda Nagar, Bejoy Nagar, Shyam Nagar, Krishna Nagar and Radha Nagar.

Outline map of the Andaman Islands, with the location of Little Andaman highlighted (in red).
Little Andaman island (Onge: Gaubolambe) is the fourth largest of the Andaman Islands with an area of 734.39 km², lying at the southern end of the archipelago. It is separated from Rutland Island in Great Andaman by the Duncan Passage. It is home to the Onge tribe, who call the island Egu Belong, and has been a tribal reserve since 1957. At the census of 2001, the population numbered 17,528 in 4093 households, spread among 18 villages. The village of Kwate-tu-Kwage is located on Hut Bay, on the east coast of the island. It has a deep water wharf that can be approached through a gap in the coral reef.
The lowlying island has widespread rainforest and several rare species of marine turtle. In the 1960s, the Government of India initiated a colonisation programme centred on forestry, but this was later largely abandoned and a court order in 2002 confirmed its protection.
Little Andaman is often considered the counterpart of the Great Andaman island group.
