WikiLeaks founder suspected of rape, Swedish tabloid reports
Assange addressed the report on WikiLeaks Twitter page, saying "the charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing."
The prosecutor's office in Stockholm issued a brief statement saying it "confirms media reports that a foreign citizen has been arrested in absentia" but didn't name Assange.
"The arrest refers to two separate events, one complaint of molestation and one complaint of rape," the statement said.
"The person is arrested in absentia, as there is a risk that he could obstruct the investigation," it said.
Expressen said prosecutor Maria Haljebo Kjellstrand confirmed that Assange, who is an Australian citizen, was the person sought on the warrant. Haljebo Kjellstrand could not be reached for comment Saturday. The prosecutor's office said all information related to the case would be posted on its website.
"We were warned to expect 'dirty tricks.' Now we have the first one," WikiLeaks said on its Twitter page.
"Expressen is a tabloid; No one here has been contacted by Swedish police. Needless to say this will prove hugely distracting," it said in another tweet.
WikiLeaks has angered the Obama administration by publishing thousands of leaked documents about U.S. military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan. Assange said Wednesday that WikiLeaks plans to release a new batch of 15,000 documents from the Afghan war within weeks.
Assange was in Sweden last week partly to apply for a publishing certificate to make sure the website, which has servers in Sweden, can take full advantage of Swedish laws protecting whistle-blowers.
He also spoke at a seminar hosted by the Christian faction of the opposition Social Democratic party and announced he would write bimonthly columns for a left-wing Swedish newspaper.

AFP - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is wanted in Sweden where he has been accused of rape, the prosecutor's office said Saturday.
"Julian Assange is wanted for two different issues, one of them is that he's suspected of rape in Sweden," the director of communications Karin Rosander told AFP.
He was unable to say what the other accusation was or whether the search warrant was international.
According to the Swedish daily Expressen, the 39-year-old Australian is also wanted for assaulting a woman.
Assange was in Sweden last week, where he announced at a press conference that the whistleblower website was set to publish a final batch of 15,000 secret documents on the war in Afghanistan in "a couple of weeks."

Free WikiLeaks Suspect Manning, say activists
A growing number of anti-war activists are speaking out against the arrest of US Army Private Bradley Manning, accused of giving classified documents to whistle-blowing site WikiLeaks. Mike Gogulski, founder of the Bradley Manning Support Network, tells RFI that Manning's arrest is unjustified.
Dozens of people joined demonstrations in New York, Oklahoma City and Virginia this month to protest the May arrest of 23-year old Manning. The US Army has charged him with leaking over 75,000 classified reports [1] on the war in Afghanistan [2] and other sensitive subjects. Several anti-war organizations are also calling for Manning's release.
If convicted, Manning faces up to 52 years in prison. He is currently represented by military-appointed attorneys, who have refused to comment on the charges. Gogulski says his organisation has raised 50,000 dollars (40,000 euros) so far to help hire a civilian defense attorney for Manning. WikiLeaks has pledged the same amount toward the effort, he said.
"I think the grand dream that I and many others share is that someone in the Obama administration will wake up and realize that what they're dealing here with is not a case of treason […] but rather a heroic act to bring transparency to the prosecution of these wars," says Gogulski.
"What we're hoping is that by raising awareness of the case, we'll be able to collect enough donations to mount a vigorous defense on Manning's behalf."

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape
Swedish authorities say they have issued an arrest warrant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, on accusations of rape and molestation.
The warrant was issued late on Friday, said Karin Rosander, communications head at Sweden's prosecutors' office.
Swedish police have been trying to contact Mr Assange, but have not yet been able to, she told the BBC.
Wikileaks, criticised for leaking Afghan war documents, quoted him saying the charges were "without basis".

The message, which appeared on Twitter and was attributed directly to Mr Assange, said the appearance of the allegations "at this moment is deeply disturbing".
In a series of other messages posted on the Wikileaks Twitter feed, the whistle-blowing website said: "No-one here has been contacted by Swedish police", and that it had been warned to expect "dirty tricks".
Last month, Wikileaks published more than 90,000 secret US military documents on the war in Afghanistan.
US authorities criticised the leak, saying it could put the lives of coalition soldiers and Afghans, especially informers, at risk.
Mr Assange has said that Wikileaks is intending to release a further 15,000 documents in the coming weeks.
Ms Rosander said there were two separate allegations against Mr Assange, one of rape and the other of molestation.
She gave no details of the accusations. She said that as far as she knew they related to alleged incidents that took place in Sweden.
Media reports say Mr Assange was in Sweden last week to talk about his work and defend the decision by Wikileaks to publish the Afghan war logs.
The allegations were first reported in the Swedish newspaper Expressen.
