Dear Mr. Nurul Kabir,
Sir,

You could only right such an editorial, as very much expected of you. When the whole world accepted their attrrocities and criminalisation of almost everything on this planet (at thier possessions) and rewarded Blair with UN positions what can you expect from so called small human right activists in our native land specially whose mind set is only getting foreign donations and serving their international and local mentors politically and socially. They come out with garland with fragrance and long grin that only befits them. Do they have shame? You can see what is happening to our own human right situation, they are far too occupied to attend the issues.
Thanks for such an Editorial

New Age Editorial (23.08.2010)
Blair's visit and enamoured political
elite: a crying out shame
IT IS, perhaps, the first time since he deceived the British parliament, with a dodgy dossier on the nuclear weapons capability of the Saddam Hussein regime, into authorising him to engage the British armed forces in the illegal United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, Tony Blair's arrival in, or departure from, a country was not marked by any anti-war protests or any calls for his trial at the International Court of Justice for crimes committed against humanity. When Blair, currently the envoy of the quartet of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia, arrived in Dhaka on a two-day 'private visit' along with his wife Cherie on Friday, there was no rally of placard-wielding, effigy-burning, slogan-shouting anti-war protesters. If such a display of public indifference is disappointing, the gloating hospitality extended to the Blairs by the mainstream political elite is shameful.
As reported in the media, the government despatched the foreign secretary to Shahjalal International Airport to receive the former British prime minister and his wife. Later in the evening, the Bangladesh prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, met the couple at her office on Saturday morning; her effusive hospitality was all too apparent from the photograph published on the back page of New Age on Sunday. Blair and Hasina are learnt to have discussed international and domestic issues, including climate change, good governance, local government and parliamentary democracy. In the afternoon, the leader of the opposition in parliament and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Khaleda Zia, went to the Baridhara residence of the British high commissioner for a 'courtesy call' on Blair. During the half-an-hour meeting, the two former prime ministers 'recalled the warm relations between the two countries' when they were in power in their
respective countries, according to a report published in New Age on Sunday, quoting BNP vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury.
The effusion of goodwill showered upon Blair could very well be the manifestation of the colonial hangover of the political elite of the country but that hardly extenuates its guilt. After all, Blair, along with former US president George W Bush, weaved perhaps one of the most devious deceptions in human history, with their respective governments' tainted and tailored intelligence reports, to launch an illegal invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Every rationale that they had set forth before the invasion proved to be unfounded — the Saddam regime did not have the facility for weapons-grade uranium enrichment, let alone send nuclear weapon-carrying long-range missiles into the heart of the UK. Also empty was the promise that Bush and Blair had made of a better life for the regular Iraqis in post-Saddam era. In the end, the invasion of Iraq was about US hegemony and about the west's control over the oil-rich West Asia. And, ultimately, the people of
Iraq paid the price. More than a million Iraqi civilians have so far died while the country has irrevocably slid into the depth of political uncertainty and sectarian violence. The death count rises every passing hour. The same saga of deception and devastation earlier also led to the complete ruin of Afghanistan.
If any two individuals could and should be held responsible for the diabolical deception and the consequent carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan, it must be Bush and Blair. The latter was here and the political elite extended him gloating hospitality and, in the process, shamed the entire nation. The shame is all the more for the Awami League-led government. It pursues, on the one hand, the noble agenda of prosecuting the perpetrators of crimes against humanity during the war of independence while, on the other, rolled out red carpet, so to speak, to one of two worst war criminals of the time. Such duplicity certainly deserves a lot more than public condemnation.
