FAQ Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China over five thousand years ago. It is based on the belief that health is determines by a balance flow of qi (also referred to as chi), the vital life energy present in all living organisms. According to acupuncture theory, qi circulates in the body along twelve major energy pathways, called meridians, each linked to specific internal organs and organ systems. According to William Michael Cargile, B.S., D.C., F.I.A.C.A., Chairman of Research for the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, there are over one thousand acupoints within the meridian system that can be stimulated to enhance (just under the skin), they help correct and rebalance the flow of energy and consequently relieve pain and/or restore health.
Can It Help Me?
"Not only is acupuncture effective as a primary modality, it also plays a vital role as an adjunctive therapy due to how effective the meridian system is as a means of proper diagnosis. Because the meridians influence every cell in the body and pass through every organ and organ system, acupuncture, helps to provide an accurate and noninvasive means of determining health deficiencies as well as a method of re-establishing balance."
Their are 104 different conditions that acupuncture can treat, including migraines, sinusitis, the common cold, tonsillitis, asthma, inflammation of the eyes, addictions, myopia, duodenal ulcer (damaged mucous membrane in a portion of the small intestine) and other gastrointestinal disorders, trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial pain), Meniere's disease (ringing in the ears coupled with dizziness), tennis elbow, paralysis fromstroke, speech aphasia (loss of language abilities due to brain damage), sciatica, and osteoarthritis. Acupuncture has also been found to be effective in the treatment of a variety of rheumatoid conditions, and brings relief in 80 percent of those who suffer from arthrosis.
Acupuncture is also valuable in the treatment of environmentally-induced illnesses due to radiation, pesticide poisoning, environmentally toxic compounds, and air pollution. Also treatment for pain relief, as it appears to stimulate the release of endorphins and enkephalins, the body's natural pain-killing chemicals. David Eisenberg, M.D., Clinical Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School states that, "There is evidence that acupuncture influences the production and distribution of a great many neurotransmitters (substances that transmit nerve impulses to the brain) and neuromodulators (substances produced by neurons which effect neurotransmitters), and that this in turn alters the perception of pain."
