I want to inform you about another incident of physical assault upon our activist Mr. Ajimuddin Sarkar, District Human Rights Monitor (DHRM). On 16th September 2013, he went to Lalbagh Sub Divisional Hospital at around 3.30 pm to see and record the version of a victim of police torture, named Mr. Mannan Seikh, son of Mr. Isharuddin, resident of Durgapur, post office- Natun Durgapur under Islampur police station of Murshidabad district, The victim was around 40 years of age, and on 11thof September, he was brutally tortured by the Officer in Charge of Islampur police station and three other police personnel of same police station, as alleged. The background of the incident was a scuffle broke between the villagers of above-mentioned village with the punters, while the villagers protested, the police personnel came and beat the said Mr. Mannan seikh, he was brought to Islampur police station from the said village at about 12 noon and later released from the police station at around 8.30 pm same day; after furnishing a bond at the police station. The said victim received severe injuries on his back and knee; he got admitted at the Lalbagh Sub Divisional Hospital on 12th September, next day.
After receiving this information from our own source, Mr. Ajimuddin Sarkar went to the hospital to record his statement and capture the pictures of his injury marks. While Mr. Sarkar was talking with the victim, a staff nurse, name unknown came to the patient and administered an injection; Mr. Sarkar was trying to capture a picture of the same. Meanwhile, the staff nurse made a noise by seeing this and her companions assembled at the place. The staffs then pined down Mr. Sarkar and shoved him towards the room of ward master; in between they severally physically and verbally abused Mr. Sarkar again and again. After that he was locked in the room of the ward master in the instance of the said ward master; Prabit Babu. Mr. Sarkar was again beaten at the room of the ward master. Mr. Sarkar somehow managed to call us at our office and Mr. Kirity Roy; Secretary MASUM, called the on duty officer of Lalbagh Police Station and then also talked with the 2nd officer and also the Sub Divisional Police Officer of Lalbagh, Mr. Tanmoy Sarkar at around 3.50 pm, and requested for necessary steps; the reason was not known but the hospital staffs then released Mr. Sarkar from their captivity at around 4 pm.
Mr. Sarkar was totally downhearted by the incident and with inflicted injuries; on his way to the medical care facility to receive immediate medical assistance. His medical reports are awaited.
He submitted written complaint to office of District Superintendant of police on 17th September 2013.
In this context I demand for total safety and security for Mr. Ajimuddin Sarkar and immediate actions against the involved medical staffs. The involvement of Islampur police station must be ascertained after a thorough investigation over the issue.
Please take note, that in Murshidabad district, our DHRMs, Mr. Gopen Sharma and Mr. Ajimuddin Sarkar are continuously harassed, assaulted, threatened and falsely charged. I want to recall that all the complaints in connection with attacks upon human rights defenders attached to MASUM are lying in your office without any observation in any case.
