Iran's Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi
Iran's ambassador in Beirut says Israel can no longer pose a threat to Lebanon and the Gaza Strip as it has lost its key supporter in the region, Egypt.
"The main program for the security of Israel in the world has fallen apart, and thus, this regime can by no means think of threatening Lebanon or the Gaza Strip or anywhere else from now on," IRNA quoted Ghazanfar Roknabadi as saying on Tuesday.
Israel is now worried about its security more than ever, after the downfall of the Egyptian regime headed by ousted President Hosni Mubarak, who was a strong supporter of Israel's security, the Iranian envoy said.
In February, after 18 days of massive protests across Egypt, Mubarak stepped down from power.
Mubarak handed over power to Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is headed by Defense Minister Gen. Mohammed Tantawi.
Roknabadi also said that forming the government in Lebanon is "an internal issue," adding that the Islamic Republic has repeatedly voiced its support for "an independent Lebanon," and that it supports all political factions in the Middle Eastern country.
Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri's government collapsed in January due to a dispute over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, which is investigating the assassination of his father, former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri killed in a bombing incident in Beirut in 2005.
On January 25, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman issued a decree appointing Hezbollah-backed candidate Najib Mikati as the country's new prime minister following the collapse of Hariri's government.
