    Most of the people of India need not feel any humiliation over the incidence of frisking or pat-down of the Indian ambassador Meera Shankar by the security staff of the Mississippi's Jackson airport in USA on December 4. In the past, even former President APJ Abdul Kalam and actor Shahrukh Khan had been frisked at airports in USA. What is wrong with anything that is done for the security of all the people travelling by aeroplanes?

 

    Why should even the VIPs be exempted from undergoing the security checks at airports like frisking, which have become absolutely necessary in this age of terrorists who are ready to blow up aeroplanes with the help of hidden bombs?

 

    I believe that even the American first lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other VIPs should not be exempted from any security checks at airports, like frisking or pat-downs, when they travel to India and other countries outside the USA. In fact, the VIPs like Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton should set a good example to all the other air travellers of the world by undergoing frisking and other security checks regularly.

 

    If the Sikhs can be asked to remove their turbans for security checks conducted at airports in USA, then even the men and women who wear wigs should be told to remove their wigs during such security checks.

US expresses regret over frisking of Indian envoy Agencies Tags : Indian Ambassador to US, Meera Shankar, US airport frisking, diplomatic status Posted: Fri Dec 10 2010, 09:24 hrs Washington: Meera Shankar, a career diplomat, has served as Indian ambassador to the United States since April 2009.   US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed concern over an incident where Indian Ambassador to Washington was pulled out of an airport security line and patted down by an American security agent in Mississippi despite being told of her diplomatic status. The Obama administration has also regretted the humiliating incident that took place on December 4 at the Jackson-Evers International Airport where sari-clad Meera Shankar was about to board a flight to Baltimore after attending the Mississippi State University's programme. "We obviously are concerned about it. We will be looking into it and trying to determine both what happened and what we could do to prevent such incidents in the future," Clinton told reporters at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department in joint press availability with her Nigerian counterpart. According to the Indian Embassy here, the State Department has reached out to Shankar and regretted about the incident. "The US State Department has reached out to the Ambassador and has regretted what all had happened. The Embassy is in touch with the State Department on this issue," Indian Embassy spokesman Virander Paul said. Paul confirmed that the Ambassador was subjected to the pat down security check last week at the Jackson-Evers International Airport. Earlier, State Department spokesman P J Crowley said: "It is our understanding the (Indian) Ambassador was pulled out for secondary screening, and DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has indicated they're prepared to talk about this."
