US Army 'kill team' in Afghanistan posed with photos of murdered civilians 21 Mar 2011 Commanders in Afghanistan are bracing themselves for possible riots and public fury triggered by the publication of "trophy" photographs of US soldiers posing with the dead bodies of defenceless Afghan civilians they killed. Senior officials at Nato's International Security Assistance Force in Kabul have compared the pictures published by the German news weekly Der Spiegel to the images of US soldiers abusing prisoners in Abu Ghraib in Iraq which sparked waves of anti-US protests around the world. The pictures show the aftermath of the deliberate murders of Afghan civilians by a 'rogue' US Stryker tank unit that operated in the southern province of Kandahar last year. [Yeah, guess these Afghan civilians won't need "rescuing" from Muammar el-Qaddafi. Looks like one big 'Criminal Minds' marathon with the Pentagon-as-unsub again! Gee, this is really bad PR for Nobel Prize-winning Barack Obama and the roll-out of his third war! --LRP]
The 'Kill Team' Images --US Army Apologizes for Horrific Photos from Afghanistan --SPIEGEL and SPIEGEL TV obtained close to 4,000 photos and videos. 21 Mar 2011 The images are repulsive. A group of rogue US Army soldiers in Afghanistan killed innocent civilians and then posed with their bodies. On Monday, SPIEGEL published some of the photos -- and the US military responded promptly with an apology. Still, NATO fears that reactions in Afghanistan could be violent... The suspects are accused of having killed civilians for no reason and then of trying to make it look as though the killings had been acts of self-defense. [The US Army only apologized because the military is worried about *repercussions.* With the Pentagon, it's all about *them.* --LRP]
Libya no-fly zone to soon reach 1,000 km-general 21 Mar 2011 The U.N.-approved no-fly zone over Libya is expanding and will soon cover a 1,000-km area as aircraft from additional coalition countries arrive in the region, the head of U.S. Africa Command said on Monday. U.S. Army General Carter Ham told a Pentagon briefing that coalition air forces were continuing to fly missions to sustain the no-fly zone.
Britain's Commander-in-Chief the Queen sanctions deployment of her SAS troops in Libya --Special forces have been operating in Libya for more than three weeks and more could be sent: Senior defense source 21 Mar 2011 The UK Military has deployed several teams of its Special Air Service (SAS) forces to Libya in a mission to identify targets for bombing raids. The Ministry of Defence's (MoD) highly trained units, known as "Smash" teams, have been commissioning reconnaissance missions inside the North African country to report the location of Libyan airfields, supply routes, radar stations and anti-aircraft defense batteries, the Daily Mail reported. British defense chiefs have used this intelligence to help RAF Tornado jets and Royal Navy's submarines in the Mediterranean, HMS Triumph, carry out devastating strikes, the daily said.
Explosions, anti-aircraft rounds rock Tripoli 21 Mar 2011 Explosions and anti-aircraft rounds rattled Tripoli for a third night on Monday, and state television said several sites in the capital had come under attacks by what it called the "crusader enemy." It was not immediately clear what caused the explosions in Tripoli. Barrages of anti-aircraft tracer fire crisscrossed the night sky in random directions as gunners appeared to try to shoot down coalition warplanes. At least two explosions rocked the city of about 2 million people.
U.S., French, and the Queen's British forces expand Libya bombing campaign --Smoke billows from Moammar Kadafi's massive residential compound in Tripoli. The U.S. scoffs at Libyan cease-fire announcement. 20 Mar 2011 U.S., French and British forces blasted Libyan air defenses and ground forces, drawing intense volleys of tracer and antiaircraft fire over Tripoli on Sunday on the second day of a military campaign. Late Sunday, smoke billowed from Kadafi's massive Bab Azizia residential compound shortly after an earth-shaking explosion. Rounds of antiaircraft and tracer fire lit up the night for the third time in less than 24 hours.
One building of Gaddafi residence destroyed by missile: state TV 21 Mar 2011 One administrative building of the residence compound of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was destroyed by a missile on Sunday, Libyan state TV reported. It remains unknown whether Gaddafi was inside the compound at the time of bombing. State TV footage showed that the building, which is quite near to the tent where the Libyan leader usually receive guests, had been severely damaged.
French jets resume Libya sorties 20 Mar 2011 French jets have begun a second day of operations over Libya to enforce a no-fly zone against Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces. The 15 planes patrolled Libyan airspace but did not open fire because they met no resistance, a spokesman said. France also says Qatar is to about to deploy four planes to the operation.
The Queen's Royal Navy fires cruise missiles at key Libyan targets --UK ships and aircraft spearhead Operation Odyssey Dawn 20 Mar 2011 A Royal Navy submarine launched Tomahawk cruise missiles at key air defences across Libya last night in the first of a wave of attacks by British forces aimed at enforcing a no-fly zone. A Trafalgar-class submarine, which had been secretly on standby in the Mediterranean for several days, began firing on radar bases, surface-to-air sites and infrastructure related to air defence.
US commander warns of Libya stalemate 20 Mar 2011 Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, has said the military operation in Libya called for by the UN Security Council is not aimed at regime change - adding that a "stalemate" could well exist, leaving Muammar Gaddafi in power. The admiral also said that no-fly zone had "effectively been established", as Gaddafi's planes had not taken to the skies following Saturday's overnight shelling of dozens of targets in northern Libya. Anti-aircraft fire was also heard in the Libyan capital on Sunday night, indicating a second wave of incoming jets.
Liberal Democrats in uproar over Libya action 20 Mar 2011 A hard-core group of liberal House Democrats is questioning the constitutionality of U.S. missile strikes against Libya, with one lawmaker raising the prospect of impeachment during a Democratic Caucus conference call on Saturday. Reps. Jerrold Nadler (NY), Donna Edwards (MD), Mike Capuano (MA), Dennis Kucinich (OH), Maxine Waters (CA), Rob Andrews (NJ), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX), Barbara Lee (CA) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC) "all strongly raised objections to the constitutionality of the president's actions" during that call, said two Democratic lawmakers who took part.
Concerns over Libya conflict as families fear another prolonged battle abroad --'How can they justify a pot of money for this mission [sic]?' 20 Mar 2011 Military families expressed concern that British action against Libya will put pressure on those serving abroad who are already facing the brunt of defence cuts. Many feared a protracted involvement which could stretch the armed forces and divert attention from the conflict in Afghanistan. Lucy Aldridge, whose son William was among the youngest to be killed in Afghanistan in July 2009, said it was "utter lunacy" for the government to go into Libya.
Libya: the West and al-Qaeda on the same side [They usually are.] 18 Mar 2011 Statements of support for Libya's revolution by al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh] and leading Islamists have led to fears that military action by the West might be playing into the hands of its ideological enemies. WikiLeaks cables, independent analysts and reporters have all identified supporters of Islamist causes among the opposition to Col Gaddafi's regime, particularly in the towns of Benghazi and Dernah. An al-Qaeda leader of Libyan origin, Abu Yahya al-Libi, released a statement backing the insurrection a week ago, while Yusuf Qaradawi, the Qatar-based, Muslim Brotherhood-linked theologian issued a fatwa authorising Col Gaddafi's military entourage to assassinate him.

Bradley Manning is being held in solitary confinement at the Quantico base in Virginia awaiting trial on nearly two dozen charges, including aiding the enemy. The 23-year-old former intelligence analyst is accused of handing over confidential US military and government documents to the whistleblowing website.
Stuxnet found in Japan, designed to attack off-line servers via USB memory sticks 05 Oct 2010 Stuxnet, a computer virus [from US-Israel] designed to attack servers isolated from the Internet, such as at [nuclear] power plants, has been confirmed on 63 personal computers in Japan since July, according to major security firm Symantec Corp. The virus does not cause any damage online, but once it enters an industrial system, it can send a certain program out of control. Symantec says the virus reaches the servers via USB memory sticks, and warns against the careless use of such devices.
Smoke, steam rise from Japan nuclear plant: Kyodo 21 Mar 2011 Smoke and steam again rose from damaged reactors on Tuesday at Japan's quake-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant, where workers have battled to avert a large-scale disaster, Kyodo News reported. White steam-like vapour was seen rising from the number two reactor and what looked like white hazy smoke from the number three reactor, Kyodo said, adding that efforts to spray water and restore electricity had temporarily stalled.
Japan Radiation Release Long-Term Problem, France's ASN Says 21 Mar 2011 The release of radiation from the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant will be a problem for Japan for years to come, according to the French nuclear watchdog. "Japan will have to deal with the consequences of this accident for decades," Andre-Claude Lacoste, head of the Paris-based Autorite de Surete Nucleaire, said at a press conference in Paris today. Radioactive contamination, which has been "significant," could spread to as far as 100 kilometers (62 miles) around the site, he said.
Radioactivity found in Japan seawater 22 Mar 2011 High levels of radioactive substances have been detected in seawater near a quake-crippled nuclear power plant in Japan, its operator says. The radioactive substances have been detected in seawater sampled Monday 100 meters south of the Fukushima No.1 plant. A Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) official said the level of iodine-131 (a major radioactive hazard present in nuclear fission products) was 127 times higher and caesium-134 (extracts from waste produced by nuclear reactors) was 25 times higher than government-set standards.
Gov't orders 4 prefectures to suspend some food shipments 22 Mar 2011 The government ordered Fukushima and three other prefectures Monday to suspend shipments of spinach and another leaf vegetable following the detection of radioactive substances in the produce at levels beyond legal limits, while trace amounts of radioactive substances were detected in tap water samples collected Sunday and Monday in nine prefectures. High levels of radioactive substances were also detected in seawater near a troubled nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, according to the plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co.
Radiation poisoning of food supply in Japan 'is a lot more serious' than first feared, health experts admit --Contaminated food believed to have made it out of containment zone around stricken plant --Smoke seen rising from area which housed core of spent nuclear fuel in reactor Number 3 21 Mar 2011 The World Health Organisation has said that the amount of radiation in food after the earthquake damaged a Japanese nuclear plant was worse then previously thought. Fears have already been raised after radiation was detected in spinach, beans and milk produced near the stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. The contamination has also spread to tap water in Tokyo and there are concerns that radioactive particles in water used to cool the plant's reactors will leak into the sea. [This is why Obusha invaded Libya, when Qaddafi has been in power for *years.* Obomba needed a major distraction for his Exelon overlord and cover for his $36 billion-dollar bl*wjob for the nuclear power industry. --LRP]
WHO spokesman: Japan food safety situation "serious" 21 Mar 2011 The World Health Organisation said on Monday that the detection of radiation in food after an earthquake damaged a Japanese nuclear plant was a more serious problem than it had first expected. "Quite clearly it's a serious situation," Peter Cordingley, Manila-based spokesman for WHO's regional office for the Western Pacific, told Reuters in a telephone interview. "It's a lot more serious than anybody thought in the early days when we thought that this kind of problem can be limited to 20 to 30 kilometres," he said.
Japan restricts milk, vegetables produced near damaged nuclear plant 20 Mar 2011 Japan slapped restrictions on some food produced in two provinces around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant Sunday after high levels of radioactivity turned up in spinach and milk. The Japanese government has banned the sale of raw milk from Fukushima Prefecture, where the Fukushima Daiichi plant is located, and prohibited the sale of spinach from neighboring Ibaraki Prefecture after finding levels of radioactive iodine and cesium higher than government standards, the country's Health Ministry reported. And officials in Fukushima halted the distribution of locally grown vegetables outside the prefecture.
Taiwan finds radiation on imported Japanese beans 20 Mar 2011 Radiation was detected on fava beans imported from Japan to Taiwan, an official there said Sunday in what appears to be the first case of contamination in Japanese imports. The amount of radiation was well below Taiwan's legal limit and not harmful to human health, the official from Taiwan's Cabinet-level Atomic Energy Council told The Associated Press.
U.S. State Department offers anti-radiation drug to its workers in Japan --The military has already started handing out the drug to its personnel, with four U.S. naval bases across Japan setting up distribution lines today. 21 Mar 2011 The U.S. State Department is to offer potassium iodide to its workers in Japan as fears over radiation levels continue. The announcement came this morning, as smoke was seen rising from the number three reactor at Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. But the State Department said it is only supplying the anti-radiation drug as a precaution, and told its staff they must not take it yet.
Thousands of U.S. Personnel Evacuated From Japan to Western Wash. 20 Mar 2011 Thousands of U.S. military and Department of Defense personnel are being voluntarily evacuated from Japan to Seattle and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The USO confirmed Friday that 15,000 U.S. personnel and their dependents will be hosted at USO centers at SeaTac and JBLM in the coming days. The evacuation is part of the U.S. State Department's voluntary evacuation of U.S. personnel following growing concerns at nuclear plants in Japan.

The quake has put pressure on the fault lines near the Japanese capital and experts have suggested that a size 7.5 magnitude earthquake could hit.
Mo. pushes ahead with nuclear plant bill 21 Mar 2011 Backers of [GOP-backed, of course] legislation designed to help build a second Missouri nuclear power plant are pushing forward with the idea, despite an emergency in Japan set off by an earthquake, tsunami and overheating reactors. Yet, fears of meltdowns, radiation and the long term ramifications of the Japanese situation have spread across the Pacific. It also has tinged Missouri's debate about whether to let power companies charge their customers for taking a preliminary step toward potentially building a second reactor here.
Possible oil sheen under investigation in Gulf of Mexico could be large --One caller reported a sheen about 100 miles long 19 Mar 2011 The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating reports of a potentially massive oil sheen about 20 miles north of the site of last April's Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. A helicopter crew and pollution investigators have been dispatched to Main Pass Block 41 in response to two calls to the National Response Center, the federal point of contact for reporting oil and chemical spills [cover-ups], said Paul Barnard, an operations controller for Coast Guard Sector New Orleans.
