Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:10PM
A spying system camouflaged to look like a rock is seen after it was discovered near the southern city of Tyre on March 17, 2011.
The Lebanese army says its units have dismantled an advanced Israeli espionage and surveillance system near the southern city of Tyre.
The surveillance system, disguised as a rock, was planted in Shamaa village in southern Lebanon, the army said in a statement on Thursday, dpa reported.
It said that intelligence units of the resistance force Hezbollah located the device and informed the Lebanese army about it, who have dismantled it.
According to the statement, the device was camouflaged as a rock. It includes a camera system and a system for transmitting the images.
It also contained a system for receiving the control signals and an energy feeding source that could be activated by a reconnaissance plane.
The device allowed Israel to monitor area's along the southern Lebanese coastline.
Lebanon has discovered several Israeli spying devices across the country in recent years. On December 16, 2010 the Lebanese army said it dismantled a similar device in the area of Barouk, southeast of Beirut.
More than 100 people in Lebanon have been arrested since 2009 on suspicion of collaborating with Israel.
