Gates hints at open-ended war in Libya 23 Mar 2011 The US defense secretary says there is no timeline for the end of the US-led assault on Libya as international opposition to the invasion continues to grow. During a visit to Cairo, Robert Gates said no one was in a position to predict what would happen in Libya. Gates also rejected criticism with regards to the air strikes in Libya which have resulted in civilian causalities over the past five days.

What does  that mean oh blind, arrogant and  rhetorical White House? and I quote: "White House:installing a democratic system" in Libya? You have to put your own house in order first, and that goes for the appalling Monarchical Britain and its dreadful Commander-in-Chief the Queen who has sanctioned all this British interference. Do not forget that all the British military swear an oath of allegiance to this woman! When will she put an end to all this war-mongering the world wonders? Shame on her!William Gladys.

White House: 'Installing a democratic system' is goal in Libya [Install one in the U.S., first.] 22 Mar 2011 The White House suggested Tuesday the mission in Libya is one of regime change, despite emphatic statements from President Obama and military brass that the goal is not to remove Moammar Gadhafi from power. According to a White House readout of a Monday night call between Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the two leaders "underscored their shared commitment to the goal of helping provide the Libyan people an opportunity to transform their country, by installing a democratic system that respects the people's will." The term "installing" suggests the goal of regime change.

'US-led no-fly zone on Libya to cost $1bn' --The first day of Operation Odyssey (*puke*) Dawn had a price tag of over $100 million for the US in missiles alone, according to estimates. 23 Mar 2011 The initial cost of a no-fly zone over Libya is likely to surpass $1 billion if the US-led military operations in the country persist for more than a few months, a report says. With the Western alliance struggling to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya, analysts say the expense for the imposition of the no-fly zone as part of attempts to unseat embattled ruler Muammar Gaddafi was likely to be between $400 million and $800 million, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Huge blast heard in eastern Tripoli 23 Mar 2011 A huge explosion has been heard on a military base in eastern Tripoli, the capital of Libya, witnesses say. The blast was heard "on Wednesday night on a military base in the Tajura region 32 kilometers (about 20 miles) east of the Libyan capital," the witnesses told AFP. The incident took place as the US-led coalition has intensified its military action against forces loyal to Libyan ruler Muammar Ghaddafi. Flame and smoke could be seen rising at the base after the blast, they said.

Blasts heard in Tripoli 23 Mar 2011 At least two blasts have been heard in the Libyan capital Tripoli before dawn, as the US-led military campaign continues with its aerial bombardment of the country. Dozens of civilians have been killed in Libya since the US, Britain, France and some other Western countries launched their attacks on the North African country.

U.S. rescue chopper shoots six Libyan villagers as they welcome pilots of downed Air Force jet --Father of boy whose leg may have to be amputated bears coalition troops no malice --Minister refuses to rule out use of ground troops --Algeria calls western military intervention 'disproportionate' 22 Mar 2011 Six Libyan villagers are recovering in hospital after being shot by American soldiers coming in to rescue the U.S. pilots whose plane crash-landed in a field. The helicopter strafed the ground as it landed in a field outside Benghazi beside the downed U.S. Air Force F-15E Eagle which ran into trouble during bombing raid last night. And a handful of locals who had come to greet the pilots were hit - among them a young boy who may have to have a leg amputated because of injuries caused by a bullet wound.

Illinois National Guard Heads to Libya --Unit specializes in refueling aircraft in mid-air 21 Mar 2011 An Air National Guard unit based out of Illinois is heading to Libya to help fight against Muammar el-Qaddafi. The unit based out of Scott Air Force Base in southwest Illinois specializes in refueling aircraft in mid-air and will join the mission to establish a no-fly zone over Libya.

Nobel Committee asked to strip Obama of Peace Prize 21 Mar 2011 The Bolivian President and a Russian political leader have launched a campaign to revoke Obama's honour after the US attacked Libya. Liberal Democratic Party of Russia leader and Vice-Chairman of the State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky released a statement today calling for the Nobel Prize Committee to take back the honour bestowed on US President Barack Obama in 2009. Zhirinovsky said the attacks were "another outrageous act of aggression by NATO forces and, in particular, the United States," and that the attacks demonstrated a "colonial policy" with "one goal: to establish control over Libyan oil and the Libyan regime."

Impeach Obama Effort Underway 23 Mar 2011 (OR) Despite a call by a group of Congressional leaders, a local Poli-Sci Professor doesn't think the President will be impeached over his decision for the U.S. to join military efforts in Libya. Portland State's Gary Malecha says this group, which includes Democrat Dennis Kucinich, is concerned the President acted outside the Constitution, approving action without Congressional support. But, he says there are many in Congress to who support the work that is being done in Libya, and not enough opposition to make an impeachment happen.

Dennis Kucinich's Campaign to Impeach Obama Over Libya War 23 Mar 2011 ...The quixotic Ohio congressman is blitzing the media with his latest passion—whether President Obama's war on Libya is an impeachable offense... The Ohio congressman has cast himself as a leading antagonist since Saturday, when, during a conference call of the Democratic caucus, he asked if Obama's failure to consult Congress before green-lighting the disturbingly named "Operation Odyssey Dawn" qualified as an impeachable offense. "I raised the question of are there constitutional limitations on executive power," he explained matter-of-factly. "This is an urgent debate for this country to have."

Libyan bombing 'unconstitutional', Republicans warn Obama --US public opinion split as Republicans claim Obama's use of military force in Libya is 'an affront to our constitution' [It is, but the hypocritical sacks of sh*t had no problem when Bush did it though, right?] Republican members of Congress are claiming the conflict in Libya is unconstitutional because Barack Obama failed to seek Congressional approval. President Obama sent a letter defending the Libya intervention to members of Congress on Monday in an effort to quell a growing rebellion over his failure to consult the Senate and the House of Representatives before embarking on the third major military action of his presidency. Under the US constitution, Congressional approval is required for declarations of war.

Libya: US planes 'dropped two bombs' to protect downed pilot 22 Mar 2011 American Harrier jets dropped two large bombs on Libyan armoured vehicles who posed a threat to a downed pilot, the US military said on Tuesday night. US officials insisted that rescue crews did not fire their weapons when retrieving the pilot, contesting media reports that a squad of Marines came in with "all guns blazing" and wounding several civilians. The pilot and his weapons officer bailed out of their F-15E Strike Eagle fighter over Benghazi when it became crippled by a mechanical fault during a bombing raid on Monday night.

Libyan Govt: 'We Would Never Kill Civilians' 22 Mar 2011 Moussa Ibrahim blamed coalition forces for killing 48 civilians on the first night of military action. He told Sky News that "many" more had been killed on the second and third nights of strikes. Britain and the international community should send a "fact-finding mission" from abroad to identify who is killing civilians, instead of sending "rockets and bombs". Dr Ibrahim said coalition strikes had hit "civilian and quasi-military" targets, such as ports and harbours used by fishermen and civilian workers as well as the army.

At least 17 others were also wounded in the attacks, which sent major shockwaves through the main city.

In the first of the Wednesday attacks, one person was killed after a cart went over a landmine planted to target police on the outskirts of Peshawar, AFP reported. In the second incident, a remote control bomb in the Hangu district hit a police patrol pick-up, wounding 11 people.

Katsav was charged with twice raping an aide when he was a cabinet minister in the late 1990s. And he was also accused of molesting or sexually harassing two other women who worked for him during his time as president between 2000 and 2007. The former president was also convicted of obstructing justice, for trying to talk to one complainant about her evidence to police.

Ambulances and at least five fire engines raced to the scene of the blaze, which appeared to have ripped through all seven storeys of the building, part of an Interior Ministry compound in central Cairo. TV footage showed flames licking up the building's top floors and a huge plume of black smoke filling the sky.

A CBN news reporter suffered a minor injury from the shots and traffic was blocked. "They came after us with clubs and tear gas and attacked," according to protester Thiago Hastenheiter. "They chased us through the streets and started firing rounds of rubber bullets."

Neutron beam observed 13 times at crippled Fukushima nuke plant 23 Mar 2011 Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday it has observed a neutron beam, a kind of radioactive ray, 13 times on the premises of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after it was crippled by the massive March 11 quake-tsunami disaster. TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear plant, said the neutron beam measured about 1.5 kilometers southwest of the plant's No. 1 and 2 reactors over three days from March 13 and is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.02 microsieverts per hour.

Reactor repairs stall work to avert meltdown --Trace levels of radiation in water, over US 22 Mar 2011 Efforts to stabilize the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima stalled yesterday when engineers found that crucial machinery at one reactor required repair, a process that will take two to three days, government officials said. A team of workers trying to repair another reactor, No. 3, was evacuated in the afternoon after gray smoke rose from it, said Tetsuro Fukuyama, the deputy chief Cabinet secretary of the Japanese government. Separately, NHK cited the Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency as saying white smoke was coming from the building housing Reactor No. 2, where repairs to machinery were needed.

Tokyo water unsafe for babies, food bans imposed 24 Mar 2011 Tokyo on Wednesday warned that radioactive iodine over twice the safe level for infants had been detected in its tap water due to the disaster at a quake-hit nuclear plant northeast of Japan's capital. The revelation came after the United States barred imports of dairy and other produce from areas near the crippled Fukushima power station, and as the Chinese territory of Hong Kong became the first Asian economy to follow suit.

Japan fears food contamination as battle to cool nuclear plant continues --Abnormal radiation levels reported in tap water, vegetables and milk with concerns that fish may also be affected 22 Mar 2011 The operation to cool the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has suffered a minor setback after smoke and vapour was seen rising from two reactors, as anxiety grew over the safety of food produced in the area. Days after authorities reported abnormal levels of radiation in milk, some vegetables and tap water, the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power [Tepco] said high levels of radioactivity had been found in seawater near the facility, raising fears that seafood has also been contaminated.

Smoke stalls work at Japan reactors 23 Mar 2011 Smoke rising from Japan's damaged nuclear power plant has once again stalled efforts to reconnect power lines to the reactors and restore cooling systems. On Wednesday, black smoke was seen rising at the quake-hit Fukushima Daiichi's No. 3 reactor building which led to the evacuation of workers from the four troubled reactors, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said. This is the third time in the past two days that work to restore power and cool down spent nuclear fuel pools at the plant has been interrupted due to steam and smoke rising from the No. 2 and No. 3 reactor buildings.

Workers pulled at Japan nuke plant as smoke rises 21 Mar 2011 Operators evacuated workers from Japan's tsunami-damaged nuclear plant Monday after gray smoke rose from one of its reactor units, the latest of persistent troubles in stabilizing the radiation-leaking complex. The evacuation brought to a standstill some of the work on restoring the plant's electrical lines and restarting the water pumping systems needed to keep nuclear fuel from overheating and releasing even greater amounts of radiation. Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Hiroshi Aizawa said the evacuation was prompted by smoke rising from the area of the spent fuel storage pool at the plant's Unit 3 reactor building.

Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Skipped Inspections -- The plant had, in fact, been scheduled to be retired in February, but received a new 10 year additional lease on life 21 Mar 2011 The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant skipped a set of safety inspections, the operator of the nuclear power plant told safety regulators less than two weeks before that disaster. The report to regulators was submitted by Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) to Japan's nuclear safety regulator, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency on February 28. TEPCO said it had failed to inspect 33 pieces of equipment in the six reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex.

Japan quake death toll passes 18,000 22 Mar 2011 The human and financial cost of the tsunami continues to rise, after police estimates showed more than 18,000 people have died in the disaster and the World Bank said it may cost Japan as much as £145bn to repair the damage. The figures came as emergency workers were evacuated from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after smoke or steam was seen rising from one of its reactor units. The smoke raised concerns that water in the spent fuel pools at the No 3 unit was running low.

Japan May Consider Daylight Saving to Curb Power Use After Quake 23 Mar 2011 Japan may consider adopting daylight saving in the summer to conserve electricity after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami crippled a nuclear power plant, a measure that experts say might not have the desired effect. "We should take the opportunity to do a basic review of electricity bills and taxes as well as introducing daylight savings and flexible working hours," Renho, Prime Minister Naoto Kan's minister for electricity conservation, said at a press conference in Tokyo yesterday.

Japan Fights to Restore Water in Freezing Cold After Quake 23 Mar 2011 Millions of Japanese in regions hit by the tsunami and 9.0 earthquake 12 days ago remain without water as the government restores communications to remote towns and villages in freezing weather. While about 90 percent of highways damaged by the temblor are open to the public, according to a United Nations report, temperatures in northeastern Japan dropped as low as minus 4.3 degrees Celsius (24.3 degrees Fahrenheit) this morning.

Navy to axe 'Fukushima type' nuclear reactors from submarines --Reactors sharing similar design to ones at Japanese plant to be dropped because they fail to meet safety standards 23 Mar 2011 The Royal Navy is to drop a dangerous type of reactor used in its existing nuclear submarines because it fails to meet modern safety standards, defence ministers have disclosed. A safer type of reactor is expected to be used in the submarines that will replace the Trident fleet, as the existing design shares very similar features to the nuclear reactors involved in the Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan.

Gag me with a chainsaw! 2 Bush officials in running to be next head of FBI --President Obama's primary goal is to find a nominee who is viewed as a heavy hitter on terrorism issues, one insider says 20 Mar 2011 Two officials who worked for President [sic] George W. Bush, including one who threatened to resign to block legally questionable anti-terror surveillance [Comey], have a realistic chance of being asked to head the FBI, according to people familiar with the search. James Comey and Kenneth Wainstein served in sensitive national security-related posts at the Justice Department in the Bush regime.

Bill protecting anti-terrorism trainers, students clears Senate committee 22 Mar 2011 (GA) The Senate Public Safety Committee took just minutes this morning to approve a House bill that would keep confidential the names of anti-terrorism instructors and the law-enforcement officers who take their classes. While no one spoke in opposition to House Bill 261 before the committee's unanimous vote, one Muslim peace activist from Augusta does object. Ayman Fadel, an organizer of the CSRA Peace Alliance, argues that many of the counter-terrorism trainers are unqualified and says their tactics focus more on political dissent than security precautions.

Power to strip search passengers claimed by Feds By Bob Barr 18 Mar 2011 In a breathtaking statement delivered in an official court proceeding, the federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims authority to strip search every airline passenger; and to begin such a practice without even soliciting comment from the public. This outrageous statement recently was delivered to the American people by a DHS lawyer in arguments before the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which is considering a challenge to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) nude body scanner devices.

China buying U.S. aviation firms 22 Mar 2011 In the past year, China has been "snapping up" U.S. general aviation companies, including a recent deal to buy cash-strapped Cirrus Aircraft, an aviation consultant noted in a recent report. While the purchase of Cirrus is a small transaction, it underscores China's plans to expand its aviation industry. "In buying up established companies, China gets the management know-how, brand, distribution, technology in days, not decades," said Brian Foley, with Brian Foley Associates.

The evaluation will be videotaped and provided to prosecutors and defense attorneys, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns said in his late Monday ruling.

Fed Will Release Bank Loan Data as Top Court Rejects Appeal 21 Mar 2011 The Federal Reserve will disclose details of emergency loans it made to banks in 2008, after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an industry appeal that aimed to shield the records from public view. The justices today left intact a court order that gives the Fed five days to release the records, sought by Bloomberg News's parent company, Bloomberg LP. The Clearing House Association LLC, a group of the nation's largest commercial banks, had asked the Supreme Court to intervene.

Maine Governor Orders Removal of Labor History Mural 23 Mar 2011 Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R-Dirt-bag) has ordered the removal of a 36-foot mural depicting the state's labor history from the lobby of the Department of Labor headquarters building in Augusta. In addition, the LePage regime is renaming several department conference rooms that carry the names of pro-labor icons such as Cesar Chavez. LePage spokesman Dan Demeritt says the mural and the conference room names are not in keeping with the department's pro-business goals and some business owners complained.

Judge says Christie's school budget cuts violated constitution, fell heavily on high-risk districts 22 Mar 2011 Gov. Chris Christie's (R-Sociopath) cutbacks in school funding violate the state's mandate to provide children "a thorough and efficient" education, a court-appointed Special Master declared today in a finding that could force the governor to come up with millions more for schools. The opinion by Superior Court Judge Peter Doyne, who was appointed by the state Supreme Court in January, will now be considered by the state's highest court.

Sales of new U.S. homes tumble 16.9% to record low 23 Mar 2011 Sales of new single-family homes collapsed in February, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday, as a combination of high unemployment, tumbling prices and a glut of cheaper alternatives brought activity to a near-standstill. New-home sales fell 16.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 250,000 in February, though January's figures were revised higher to 301,000 from 284,000. Compared to February 2010, sales collapsed by 28%.
