Honestly this has been going on for years, it's just more blatant now. The fact that it's hitting the press is suggestive. Seriously this has been going on ever since the age of Usenet newsgroups, and mailing lists almost 20 yrs ago. Forums and blogs as well have been hit by hired sock puppets.
What may seem a wee bit new is extending this strategy to social networking sites, but all of these sites are intel sandboxes anyway, and they have been doing surveillance and traffic pattern analysis there since their inception, etc., etc. Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, etc all were from their inception closely tied in to defense infrastructure...
