ACTION ALERT ACTION ALERT ACTION ALERT
Residents of Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar, a slum community in eastern suburbs of Mumbai is facing illegal demolition and eviction. Today, the Additional Collector Shri Danajay came along with a contingent of more than 200 armed policemen and 6 Bull dozers to the demolish more than 3000 houses. The Demolition squad was fiercely resisted and opposed by the slum dwellers, especially the women who were successful in forcing the Demolition Squad to retreat back but with a real threat they will be coming back tomorrow again, probably with larger police force and more bulldozers.
Slum activists and residents sat in front of the police guarded demolition squad and bulldozers for more than 4 hours and exposed the illegalities of the Collector office as well as the Police who were hell bent on carrying out the eviction drive without any demolition order. After 4 hours of struggle, the Demolition Squad had to take retreat but only after threatening the slum dwellers to be ready to face a much larger demolition squad tomorrow.
Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar slum consists of more than 3000 hutments and majority of the residents belong to the Scheduled Caste & Minority Community. Mostly working as un-organised sector workers, they are the real life line of Mumbai city. This year only, the slum dwellers had started a Tailoring Training Centre and a Computer Training Centre for the residents. With the demolition looming large, the Centers are also under threat. Today, slum dwellers of Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar were supported by slum dwellers from other slums like Mandala, Rafiq Nagar, Jai Ambe Nagar and Netaji Nagar in resisting the demolition drive.
It is worth mentioning that just last month, the slum dwellers had submitted a proposal to the Central & State government regarding implementation of the Rajiv Awaas Yojana in their slum. Even the ownership of the land on which the slum exists is under dispute, as a private party by the name of Bombay Soap Factory has been claiming the land as well as the state government.
Given the un-holy nexus that exists amongst the builders-bureaucrats-politicians, in Mumbai it would not be surprising if they plan to hand over the land to a private builder. Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan earnestly requests you to support the struggle of the slum dwellers against the un-just and the illegal eviction by writing and calling to the concerned officials at the earliest. Your support would be very critical.
In Solidarity,
Santosh Thorat Jameela Begum Simpreet Singh Geeta Thatra Madhuri Variyath
