Dear all,

The appeal to the President has been sent to the President's Secretariat on 1 May 2010. More than 500 persons signed the appeal. More signatures are coming. A second lot of signatures will be sent to the President after 10th May. The full text of the appeal, full list of signatories, the acknowledgment from the President's Secretariat, and the photocopy of the appeal with some signatures are provided herewith.

A)  Full text of the appeal

To

Smt. Pratibha Patil

The Hon'ble President

Government of India

Rashtrapatibhavan, New Delhi

Respected Madam,

Sub: Stop the war within our own country.

All of us are aware of the fact that a 'war' is taking place within our own country. Several violent encounters are occurring with the help of specially trained force and alarmingly destructive modern weapons. These confrontations are occurring one after another continuously in several states of our country like Orissa, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Such 'war' is also taking place in West Bengal in the vast stretches of villages and forest areas of Medinipur-Bankura-Purulia districts including Lalgarh. Just like any other war, this one too is causing huge loss and damage of the life and property of the common people. Besides the belligerent opponents of the conflict, there are thousands of common people who are being seriously affected. People are left destitute, women tortured, young people afraid of being harassed are deserting the villages, ordinary men and women are being killed, the harvest destroyed, the school-collages-shops-markets and other institutions of daily life are non-functioning. Livelihood of the people is violently disturbed. This is often described as simple 'collateral damage'. Maybe but no less serious. The death of every person irrespective of any kind of affiliation is regrettable.

As the President of India and as the Supreme Command of our Defense Forces vest in you, we appeal to you ponder if any revengeful offensive, on a scale, that is now being experienced, on the part of the state against the section of its own population is at all acceptable. Even when a sizable section of the citizens 'goes astray', should the state think of complete liquidation of that section of the population? In the light of this we urge you to do urgently whatever is possible to stop present atrocities and war-situation. At the same time we wish to make it absolutely clear that we do not endorse any kind of organised violence that may be perpetrated in the logic of 'revolutionary transformation of society' or self-defense.

Sincerely,
