Panipat, March 22
The district police is baffled by the disappearance of a Dalit member of the Zila Parishad, Gina Ram, since March 19. The matter came to light when his family members reported the matter to the district police. His son Sohan Lal told the police that on Monday evening Gina Ram, who resided in Rajpur village of the district, went to Panipat after which he went missing.
The family suspects that he has been kidnapped as a no-confidence motion was to be moved in the zila parishad today. It said a political conspiracy behind his disappearance could not be ruled out.
Gina Ram represents ward number 4 of the district.
Meanwhile, the Haryana Pradesh Balmiki Mahasabha held a special meeting at the Balmiki temple in the local vegetable market under its state president Mam Raj Balmiki, who said that the community members would block the NH-1 if Gina Ram was not found.

Crematorium for SC/ST faces flak from Vedike
TNN | Mar 23, 2012, 05.41AM IST
MANGALORE: The Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike, Akash Bhavan, Parapade, here has opposed a move by the Mangalore City Corporation to construct a crematorium for members of scheduled castes in 1.50 acres of land in survey number 96-7 at Anand Nagar. The MCC, which has set aside the land for specific use by community members, has started the work of constructing compound wall for the proposed land, the Vedike members said here on Wednesday.
K V Shivadas, president of the Vedike, said the proposed crematorium is adjoining the main road and there are nearly 700 families of all religions residing in the vicinity. There are two primary schools and a mosque in the region, he said. The civic body is unlikely to restrict the use of crematorium only to scheduled caste members if it expends public funds on the project, he said, adding this could see a spurt in cremations right in the middle of a residential area.
There are two crematoriums at Boluru and Panjimogaru, A Rahman, member of the Vedike said, adding there is no need for another crematorium at Anand Nagar. "We have given representations against the project to deputy commissioner, commissioner ofMCC and even to then district in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar," Rahman said, adding that they have not received any concrete assurances that MCC would drop the project.
Roseline Saldanha, member, said in case MCC goes ahead with the project; the Vedike would be left with no other alternative but to stage an agitation. Shivadas said the Vedike would also move the courts to seek relief. "At present, people in the area use the crematorium at Boluru," said Kamalaksha Shetty, a member. The area corporator is caught in a dilemma on the need to support a move aimed at helping the SCs while not alienating the others, he said.

Deputy CM leads dalit revolt
TNN | Mar 23, 2012, 12.08AM IST
HYDERABAD: In what appears to be a double whammy aimed at the downfall of Kiran Kumar Reddy, his deputy C Damodar Raja Narasimha on Thursday charged that the chief minister was not addressing the various issues affecting the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the state and urged him to take responsibility for the party's debacle in the bypolls or step down immediately.
"Those at the helm of affairs in the state should set the house in order or else quit their posts," the deputy CM and SC leader told the media on the assembly premises here on Thursday.
"The bypoll results should be a wake up call for the Congress. The defeat of the ruling party, particularly in Kovur assembly seat in Nellore district, should be a warning for all of us. It is time the CM and other leaders introspect on the poll results," Raja Narasimha said.
Spelling further trouble for Kiran, the deputy CM convened a meeting in his assembly chambers of all SC and ST MLAs on Thursday afternoon, ostensibly to discuss the implementation of the SC/ST sub-plan. According to sources, about 16 MLAs who were in attendance expressed their unhappiness over the way the welfare of the Dalits was being neglected by the state government and sought a change of guard at the top. Those who were present at the meeting included rural development minister Manikya Vara Prasad, textiles minister G Prasad Kumar, and MLAs Kunja Satyavati, M Kavitha, T Lingaiah, M Rajesh, D Vijay Kumar, K Sridhar and Bikshmaiah Goud.
Later, addressing the media, the deputy CM found fault with the state government for not granting loans to SCs, for not strengthening the SC Corporation and not reviving the SC federations.
"The SCs and STs are not getting financial assistance from the state government. It is time that a leader who addressed the interests of the dalits takes charge in the state," he said.
In his criticism of Kiran Kumar, the deputy CM was supported by BC leader K Keshava Rao.
"The CM has to take the responsibility for the bypoll debacle as he chose development against sentiment and insulted the people of Telangana. Now, he has to account for his failure," the Rajya Sabha MP said. Soon after the deputy CM fired his salvo, the matter reached the chief minister, and, according to sources, Kiran Kumar immediately invited the SC/ST MLAs to his residence for dinner on Monday. "But with Raja Narasimha calling for a meeting of all Dalit MLAs on Monday to discuss their future course of action, the CM's olive branch offer may be a little too late," said one leader.
