Brothers kill girl for loving dalit man
In an incident of honour killing on Friday, two brothers of a caste Hindu family were arrested at Seevalaperi here on charges of murdering their sister who fell in love with a Dalit boy.
Police sources said Gomathi (17) had gone to work in a mill at Puthukottai area in Thoothukudi district and had fallen in love with Murugan (22) of Thiruvenkadanathapuram in Thoothukudi district, also a worker there.
Gomathi's caste Hindu family opposed their marriage as the boy was a Dalit. However, Gomathi went to Murugan's house on Thursday, and decided to stay with the boy.
As she did not return to her house, Gomathi's brothers Murugan (24) and Sudalaimuthu (20) went to Murugan's house and brought her back by promising that they would help her marry the boy she chose.
Believing their words, the girl returned home. On Friday, the brothers reported that the girl had committed suicide. But investigationrevealed that the brothers had poisoned and then hanged her. Seevalaperi police arrested the duo.

Youth fails to get caste certificate, ends life
BHOPAL: Unable to procure a caste certificate for over 18 months to appear in a police recruitment drive, a 23-year-old dalit youth allegedly committed suicide by consuming celphos pills.
The youth was admitted to a private hospital after he consumed the pills on September 11 where he succumbed on Friday. Police said deceased Rajpal Kaithal, was a resident of Narela Shankari. He was to appear in a police recruitment drive in Sehore on September 15 and was trying to get a caste certificate for the same. However, when he was unable to procure it, he decided to end his life. He was unemployed and in his dying declaration admitted that he had consumed celphos pills.
His family members later said in their statements to police that he remained disturbed as he could not get the caste certificate despite repeated attempts. "For past over a year and half, Rajpal had been trying in vain to get the caste certificate but could not get it for some reason or another", said one of his relatives SD Vanshkar at Hamidia Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, according to the records of district collectorate, Rajpal's application for a caste certificate was received last month on August 27 that was forwarded to concerned Govindpura tehsil office on September 2. It also came to light that he had applied for the second time as his earlier application was rejected due to some reason.
Rajpal's father, Hari Ram is a head constable and is posted in the police training and research institute. The deceased had three elder brothers who are building material suppliers, the police added.
The officials said the process of issuing a caste certificate takes 30 to 40 days while the expenses, including fees and affidavit cost around Rs 150.

Protesting students cane charged by police
PATIALA/BARNALA: Scheduled Castes and Backward Class students protesting against fees were cane charged by the police Patiala and Barnala on Friday.
The students, who were protesting against the academic fees imposed on Scheduled Castes and Backward Class students, were lathi-charged when they tried to scale the main gate of the deputy commissioner's office in Patiala that was locked by the police to prevent any untoward incident.
Later, the students gheraoed the main gate of DC office and held a demonstration. They lifted their sit-in only after submitting a memorandum to a senior district official.
In Barnala, too, the police used mild force to disperse the protesting activists of the Punjab Students Union, who seeking fee waiver for the dalit students. The police resorted to mild cane charge against the protesting students near the Barnala DC's office. Three students were also rounded up, who were later let off. PSU activists handed over a memorandum to DC.
"We were returning after giving the memorandum to DC Indu Malhotra when the policemen began cane charging us," said PSU leaders Pardeep Kasba and Gurpreet Kheri. Barnala deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Harpal Singh, however, denied using force against the students. He said the students had an altercation with some policemen, but the issue was solved soon.
