NDFB expands beyond Bodo belt OUR CORRESPONDENT Nagaon, Feb. 12: Ranjan Daimary's NDFB with the help of its locally organised network is expanding its extortion network in the non-Bodo dominated regions of the state. Businessmen as well as government employees having workplaces specially in central and northern Assam seem to be the targets of the Bodo militant outfit and operations are carried out with the help of non-tribal girls serving the outfit as agents. The tactics came to the fore after the recent arrests of an NDFB cadre and a non-tribal girl from a bar in central Assam's Nagaon district. The duo, Utpal Boro and Dipika Bora, were arrested by Nagaon police from Bar 79 — a popular watering hole here — during a search operation. Nagaon superintendent of police Suren Kumar said Dipika used to call an established businessman of the town over phone to strike up a friendship and on that day asked him for dinner in the bar. "They planned to mix drugs with the food to knock him out and later carried him out and handed him over to the NDFB," Kumar said. Kumar, however, refused to mention the name of the businessman for security reasons. A couple of months back, the two caught Samaguri-based Congress leader Lohit Rabha and took him to the NDFB. The businessman was later rescued by Guwahati police from the Chaygaon area in Kamrup district. Kumar said during interrogation, Dipika and her NDFB friend Utpal Boro confessed to the modus operandi. Dipika, 23, hails from neighbouring Karbi Anglong district headquarters Diphu. Utpal had been identified as a hardcore NDFB cadre who belongs to the Boko area in Kamrup district. According to official records, Utpal was earlier arrested in connection with another extortion drive for the Bodo militant outfit and later released on bail. "We have received sufficient information during interrogation about the series of operations carried out by the team in different parts of Nagaon and neighbouring Sonitpur district and investigations are on to trace the facts," a Nagaon police source said.
